Spay or Neuter Your Pet in April
April 10, 2008
SECAUCUS, N.J. -- According to the Cat Adoption team in Sherwood, Ore., April is the best month to have your feline fixed. But no matter what the species, now is a good time to have any companion animal spayed or neutered.
Cats become especially active in spring months, and as a result, shelters across the country expect to see an increase in kittens in the next few months.
But as spring is in the air, the next few months can be especially strenuous on shelters and rescues that will have to begin caring for any number of animal species that have reproduced.
The Cat Adoption Team and others like it recommend that animal owners seek out spay or neuter programs in their local area. Many shelters and other animal-friendly organizations offer low-cost procedures regardless of income or the number of animals you care to have “cut.”
To find the service available in your area, click on the Pet Services tab at zootoo.com and search for spay or neuter clinics.
Those who care for feral cats should search for a Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return program -- more commonly known as TNR -- many of which provide not only castration and vaccination, but in some cases subsidized food for colonies. Not all programs offer food, but almost all provide education and advice on caring for wayward felines.

I volunteer for an absolutely wonderful organization that educates on spay/neutering. What I've recently found is that a majority (not all) of the resources in my community that i've called won't give me the discount price if the dog is a rescue animal ... last week I rescued a female dog in need of a spay (she's in foster now) and found that without proof of low income (i'm not rich, but not on govt subsidy) and having any association with the word rescue, the cost of the spay wasn't so cheap - affordable?maybe. - any suggestions from readers out there on how to do find affordable solutions for spay/neuter when rescuing on your own personal shoe-string budget!

I contacted Spay, Inc. but they haven't replied to me yet:
www.spay.org
I also tried Friends of Animals but there were no participating vets in my area. The have reduced cost spay/neuter certificates by plugging in your zip code:
www.friendsofanimals.org
It's also good to try your local animal shelter and this website will help you find your local shelters.

Lack of money really is not an excuse not to have your dog or cat spayed or neutered. There are many organizations out there that will spay/neuter your animal at a minimal cost. In NYC the ASPCA will even send their state of the art medical van to your neighborhood if your own cat population has gotten out of control. They will "fix" your animals free of charge.
The solutions are out there. All one has to do is act and act responsibly.
