Python Nailed to Telephone Pole is Recovering

Browse News

BOSTON -- A 2-foot python is recovering well after being fastened to a telephone pole by roofing nails, in what a Massachusetts SPCA spokesman called one of the worst animal cruelty cases in that area in recent memory.

The snake, since named Trent, was discovered in May in Lawrence, attached to the pole by six 2-inch roofing nails, and may have suffered there for 20 hours.

“The cruelty that Trent went through has to be one of the more severe that we’ve seen, Brian Adams, spokesperson for Boston-based MSPCA-Angell, told Pet Pulse. “We do see severe cases, including a kitten that was allegedly micro waved, a dog that was attacked with a chainsaw, dogs that have been hung or shot, drowned.

“However, to think that somebody took the time that it would take to drive in nails through the body of a squirming snake. And hold it, and possibly have an accomplice to assist them.

“That’s what brings the severity to another level. Far and above that of hurting an animal, the time that they actually put in to treat Trent cruelly.”

The MSPCA has offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for nailing the snake, but to no avail.

“There’s never been any tips at all, Adams said.

Trent has four small pieces of metal still in his body, but they are within his musculature and therefore are not expected to migrate elsewhere in his system, Adams says. The fragments will not be removed since they do not appear to be causing Trent discomfort.

“The wounds themselves appear to be healing fine without infection,” said Adams, adding that it looks like Trent will keep the end of his tail, which was in question when he was first brought in.

The snake is living with a foster mother, a veterinary technician that works at the MSPCA’s adoption center.

“Emotionally he’s becoming a bit more stable,” Adams said, citing the fact that Trent is shedding his skin and eating well.

“Now it seems that he does shy away from hands a little bit,” Adams said. “So when you’re holding him, his head might pull away a bit, or he might show that he’s otherwise a little bit wary of people handling him. But nothing aggressive, or anything like that.”

Trent’s exact age is unknown, but from his length he is believed to be a juvenile snake. After surviving his ordeal, the python is up for adoption. Being sheepish around people, Adams says, should be only temporary for Trent.

“We think that might be an after affect of being handled in a cruel manner when he was nailed to the telephone pole,” he said. “And we believe that he’ll come around from that, given time and a little bit of handling. Because he’s a very nice snake.”

How terrible! A person who is capable of such cruelty to an animal is bound to end up abusing a person!

I'm definately not a snake person. It would definately freak me out to find one nailed to a telephone pole - on multiple levels. That's just plain cruel.

Makes you wonder if it was a religious fanatic - crucifying evil - or just your everyday nutcase. Either way, I hope they figure out who did such a cruel thing.

I am not a snake person. But this is horrible. People who do this is need to serve jail time and let them suffer they way they punished poor animals.

Snakes can be very gentle and docile creatures. Many people fear them because they do not understand them. It makes me want to throw up when I think about how many other people in the world look up to us in the United States--thinking we are "where it's at", however in all our glory, we still cannot teach people compassion for living creatures.

How horrible, some people are so sick. I am not a fan of snakes but I would not want this done to them or any animal. I am glad the animal is recovering.

One can only hope that they catch this person(s) and nail him to a pole and forget about him! Most of us love our pets and other animals and go out of our way to help them and here comes this monster that has no regard for life!!! Grrrrrrrr

This is just sickening! What can be so wrong with someone's mind to do things like this? I'm glad that they were able to save Trent. Although I'm not fond of snakes, I hate to see things like this happen! It's just sick and it's cruel!

Its so sad that anyone can cause harm to another living thing what ever it might be. There is so many sick people out there, that would not think twice before doing some thing like this. Poor snake, how could they do this to it.

It just boggles the mind at how cruel people can be....NEVER in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that there are people out there that are so cruel that they would nail an animal to a telephone pole.....not to mention some of the other horror stories they've mentioned in the article. I hope they find whoever did this and they get penalized to the MAX. There's no excuse for this. As for Trent...it's gonna take him a while before he starts realizing that he's surrounded by loving people, NOW. Poor fellow. I'd be very cautious, too, if I was him.

People are sinking to newer and lower levels of depravity. Where was this telephone pole located? Was it in a very isolated location, or did lots of people pass by this poor creature in those estimated 20 hours of torture and just keep on going?

I hope they catch these demented people before they can move on to their next victim.

As much as I don't like snakes, this is still uncalled for. What kind of area is this? Microwaved cats? Chainsawed dogs? Hung, shot and drowned dogs? Thank god I'm no where near there. Things like this make my stomach turn.

What a sick story here. The scary part is that these psychopaths get such sadistic pleasure out of not killing, but torturing, and watching their victims suffer slowly .
Even scarier is the fact that one day it could be you or your child.
I hope the poor snake finds a new beginning with someone that will really care about it.After his horrific abuse,I almost wish that he was going to a zoo or a Sanctuary.

This is horrible. How could someone do this to one of Gods creatures. I must admit that I am not a huge fan of the snake but I would never do something to hurt one. I just stay away. If the snake isn't hurting anyone after the torture it went through then I doubt it would have been aggressive before the incident. It is a shame that people would do this.

This is just another case of sick people who get their kicks seeing helpless creatures suffer. It's scary knowing that someone that is capable of cruelty like this, is free to do who knows what! It's bad even when an animal is hurt or killed by accident. But to intentionally inflict pain on a living creature is horrible.

And god knows that the next time it might be a human. Maybe thats what people need to start speaking up. Its a shame.

Oh, I must say too that when I read about other animal abuse cases they had in the area, I wanted to cry. How could someone put a kitten in a microwave, or chase a dog with a chainsaw. That is disgusting beyond words. People who hurt animals are really little people who have to build themselves up by hurting something smaller than them. If you ask me, that is a pretty sad way to live. Why not try and make the world better, not worse?

Some people are so disturbed and cruel. I can't believe that someone took the time to do this to this poor snake. I am glad that the snake survived, though. After what he went through, it is truly a miracle. I hope that they somehow find the people responsible for this crime.

How absolutely horrible for this poor snake. To think he might have been up there for nearly a whole day before he was able to be rescued. I just cannot understand people sometimes. Who could have that much cruelty in thier body? I'm so glad that the snake is doing so much better. I hope that he is able to find a happy home where he never has to fear for his life or feel such pain ever again! And I hope they catch the (insert expletive) that did this to him!

Yeah, that's pretty sick! Carpenters would be the most likely people to have roofing nails, or a homeowner in the area who just reshingled a roof??
