Python Nailed to Telephone Pole is Recovering

Browse News

BOSTON -- A 2-foot python is recovering well after being fastened to a telephone pole by roofing nails, in what a Massachusetts SPCA spokesman called one of the worst animal cruelty cases in that area in recent memory.

The snake, since named Trent, was discovered in May in Lawrence, attached to the pole by six 2-inch roofing nails, and may have suffered there for 20 hours.

“The cruelty that Trent went through has to be one of the more severe that we’ve seen, Brian Adams, spokesperson for Boston-based MSPCA-Angell, told Pet Pulse. “We do see severe cases, including a kitten that was allegedly micro waved, a dog that was attacked with a chainsaw, dogs that have been hung or shot, drowned.

“However, to think that somebody took the time that it would take to drive in nails through the body of a squirming snake. And hold it, and possibly have an accomplice to assist them.

“That’s what brings the severity to another level. Far and above that of hurting an animal, the time that they actually put in to treat Trent cruelly.”

The MSPCA has offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for nailing the snake, but to no avail.

“There’s never been any tips at all, Adams said.

Trent has four small pieces of metal still in his body, but they are within his musculature and therefore are not expected to migrate elsewhere in his system, Adams says. The fragments will not be removed since they do not appear to be causing Trent discomfort.

“The wounds themselves appear to be healing fine without infection,” said Adams, adding that it looks like Trent will keep the end of his tail, which was in question when he was first brought in.

The snake is living with a foster mother, a veterinary technician that works at the MSPCA’s adoption center.

“Emotionally he’s becoming a bit more stable,” Adams said, citing the fact that Trent is shedding his skin and eating well.

“Now it seems that he does shy away from hands a little bit,” Adams said. “So when you’re holding him, his head might pull away a bit, or he might show that he’s otherwise a little bit wary of people handling him. But nothing aggressive, or anything like that.”

Trent’s exact age is unknown, but from his length he is believed to be a juvenile snake. After surviving his ordeal, the python is up for adoption. Being sheepish around people, Adams says, should be only temporary for Trent.

“We think that might be an after affect of being handled in a cruel manner when he was nailed to the telephone pole,” he said. “And we believe that he’ll come around from that, given time and a little bit of handling. Because he’s a very nice snake.”

You hit the nail on the head with that one! (no pun intended). They start with small animals, then to large animals, then to humans.

I'm not a big friend of snakes but I still don't understand why anybody would want to torture any living being. I hope that justice will prevail in some way. Poor Trent.

How insane! That poor snake what he must have gone through, its unreal. Its scary to think we have such evil people in this world. Who knows what else that person or people have done or will do. I hate to think of that. I sure hope that the snake will be adopted by very loving owners so that he can be very happy and comfortable for the rest of his life. He sure deserves it.

There's no excuse for this type of abuse even if you happen to be affraid of them or don't like them. If that be the case, then just say away from them and leave the snake alaone. I hope they find and punish the person/s who did this to Trent.

I have to say Trent looks like a boa. I mention this because I have had pythons and boas. Boas are more docile and I just cannot fathom how anyone could get anything out of this. A lot of people are scared of them but that does not excuse this vile act. I just do not understand how someone can do things like this on something that cannot defend itself. Sickening.

If the pic posted here is the actual snake, then it IS a python....a BALL PYTHON (python regius). With that said, the person(s) who did this ought to be shot. That's just disgusting, what they did to that snake. ANY animal abuser, whether it be reptile, mammal, fish, whatever.....needs to be severely punished!!

Even if this would not be my pet of choice it still has every right to be treated properly, the more I read the more I realize I just don't understand people any more. I was brought up to respect animals, not hurt or abuse them. You had a responsible adult to tell you no, do not do that and make you realize you could be hurting your pet. I love animals, all creatures that have life have the right to live in peace and not be tortured by sick individuals. I am glad to hear the Boa is doing better. I hope for a full recovery.

No animal deserves this kind of treatment. I can't imagine what goes through the mind of a horrible person like this. The person or persons who did this deserve as good as they gave. I hope they catch them & lock them away from civilized society.

I'm not a snake fan but this is a horrible act. I am absolutely disgusted. I can only imagine that it would take a lot to hold a snake down and drive nails into its body. This is a premeditated act. I hope they find who did this and punish them greatly.

Good idea - Nail children to a telephone pole to "teach them a lesson" and see if that doesn't help. How about nailing their parents with a fat fine as well?

The fine sounds great. And then that money could be used toward the snake's veterniary bills, and anything left over toward rescue funds in general.

It's unfortunate because snakes get such a bad rap being a cold blooded reptile. Just shameful... the perpetrators would have no problem hurting any living creature.

Pretty unbelievable! Whoever did this has serious mental problems and hopefully will be found soon before they are able to continue. People like this are likely to make humans their next target. Boston should beware and watch their pets very carefully!

Regardless of whether you are a "snake person" or not ,the fact is that an animal who was someone's pet was tortured and made to suffer . At least if it had been a wild snake perhaps it would have been less trusting and more apt to defend itself from the morally reprehensible person that did this. With any luck they'll find the eejits and prosecute them . Blessings on Trent and may he have a long well-loved life in a happy home.

Yet another tale of miscreants and two-legged animals on the loose on our streets. Make the reward large enough and the individual(s) will be apprehended--then prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law--ha ha. Of course the better idea has been offered. Nail the bastard to a pole and walk away. It would no doubt be doing the world a big favor.

unfortunately the full extent of the law isn't such a deterrent in some cases because they are not harsh enough.. I believe animal cruelty cases should receive the equivalent to if it was a human or even more so a child since animals are as innocent as a child. how pathetic an individual must be to feel superior having tortured and/or killed an animal.

This story was just sickening. I can understand that some people have a strong dislike for snakes, but whoever did this was just cruel not fearful. If you're afraid of snakes you avoid them, and you certainly don't pick them up and nail them to a pole. I really hope that the sicko who did this makes the mistake of bragging about it to someone and gets turned in!
