Python Nailed to Telephone Pole is Recovering

Browse News

BOSTON -- A 2-foot python is recovering well after being fastened to a telephone pole by roofing nails, in what a Massachusetts SPCA spokesman called one of the worst animal cruelty cases in that area in recent memory.

The snake, since named Trent, was discovered in May in Lawrence, attached to the pole by six 2-inch roofing nails, and may have suffered there for 20 hours.

“The cruelty that Trent went through has to be one of the more severe that we’ve seen, Brian Adams, spokesperson for Boston-based MSPCA-Angell, told Pet Pulse. “We do see severe cases, including a kitten that was allegedly micro waved, a dog that was attacked with a chainsaw, dogs that have been hung or shot, drowned.

“However, to think that somebody took the time that it would take to drive in nails through the body of a squirming snake. And hold it, and possibly have an accomplice to assist them.

“That’s what brings the severity to another level. Far and above that of hurting an animal, the time that they actually put in to treat Trent cruelly.”

The MSPCA has offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for nailing the snake, but to no avail.

“There’s never been any tips at all, Adams said.

Trent has four small pieces of metal still in his body, but they are within his musculature and therefore are not expected to migrate elsewhere in his system, Adams says. The fragments will not be removed since they do not appear to be causing Trent discomfort.

“The wounds themselves appear to be healing fine without infection,” said Adams, adding that it looks like Trent will keep the end of his tail, which was in question when he was first brought in.

The snake is living with a foster mother, a veterinary technician that works at the MSPCA’s adoption center.

“Emotionally he’s becoming a bit more stable,” Adams said, citing the fact that Trent is shedding his skin and eating well.

“Now it seems that he does shy away from hands a little bit,” Adams said. “So when you’re holding him, his head might pull away a bit, or he might show that he’s otherwise a little bit wary of people handling him. But nothing aggressive, or anything like that.”

Trent’s exact age is unknown, but from his length he is believed to be a juvenile snake. After surviving his ordeal, the python is up for adoption. Being sheepish around people, Adams says, should be only temporary for Trent.

“We think that might be an after affect of being handled in a cruel manner when he was nailed to the telephone pole,” he said. “And we believe that he’ll come around from that, given time and a little bit of handling. Because he’s a very nice snake.”

That's horrible, for ANY animal to have to go through. Ball pythons are so sweet too, the whole situation is such a shame. :(

Hard to believe no one else saw, or knows the people responsible for this warped act. I hope the come forward, the ones who did this are a danger to the public.

I really don't understand how people can be so cruel. Deliberate acts of cruelty to anything living is unacceptable and should be punished severely. Hope they find the creep or creeps that did this.

I wish that they could find every one that was involved & put away for along time or at least give a harsh punishment. These people don't need to be around animals or kids. I hope that the snake will live a long time & not hurt anyone over his ordeal. I think that snakes belong in there own habitat but in his case I hope that he finds a good home & will be monitored so nothing bad happens.

I understand how some people don't like snakes, but really, that's no reason to be that mean to them. And to spend THAT much time... you'd think it would be an awful inconvenience to the guy that did that. If don't want the snake around, at least relocate it, if you're going to take that much time.

Where do people come up with these very cruel, odd ideas?

I agree. I am not a snake fan, but I respect them as living creatures enough to not want them to suffer like that...

That is terrible. Not sure why anyone would want to own a python in the first place but that is just a disgrace. I'm glad someone found him and he will recover.

This is the act of a really warped person. I bet it's not the first, or last sick act they commit. I hope they find him or her.

I'm not much of a snake person but no animal should be treated this way. Also, why do we allow people to own a potential life threatening animal in the first place.

What kind of a sick person(s) could even come up with the idea of nailing a poor little snake to a pole, let alone go through with it. I hope that Trent finds a kind and loving family. As for the sadistic individuals involved in this act of torture, I truly hope they are caught and severely punished. Do you really think Trent is their last victim? I truly doubt it.

I dont enjoy these stories but they have to be told. I wonder about the socializatin of snakes and if they enjoy people or if people are just a habit.

Why would anyone do that to another living creature? I'm not even a huge snake fan, and it horrifies me that someone could torture one like that. I hope that Trent finds a wonderful home where he can get lots of gentle handling, stay appropriately warm, and eat plenty of F/T rodents.

this is absolutly abhorrent how someone could do this to a snake or any animal, this person or persons need to be found as it starts with animals and ends in violence towards another human being. if someone knows something and is keeping quiet there are just as bad as the person/people who nailed him there. but i am glad to hear that trent is doing well

Not only a heartless act toward the snake, but such behavior by the abuser is likely to escalate. They need to find him - likely an adolescent male - and get him some help before it does.

Poor Trent. I am no snake lover but this is out of control. If you do not want a pet, remand him to a shelter. If they will not take them, give them to your vet - at least they can kindly put it to sleep.

I, too, am baffled by the sort of heart and mind that would conceive of this act. Nailing any animal to a pole and the other acts of cruelty described in this article make me physically ill. And when I think about the fact that the people who commit these acts are walking around in the same town that I live in (since animal cruelty happens so often I have to assume it happens where I live), I sometime feel as though I'm in one of those ridiculous sci-fi films where aliens walk among us. Bad, evil, cruel aliens from a planet far, far away.
