Smugglers Busted with 320 Tortoises

Browse News

MADAGASCAR – The BBC reported today that 320 tortoises native to Madagascar were nearly smuggled off the island, presumably for sale on the black market.

The man responsible is said to be Nigerian, and was caught with the 320 animals on an island neighboring Madagascar.

Conservationists say this is a small victory against the exotic animal trade – in fact it's the second bust in recent weeks. Pet Pulse recently reported about 1,200 African Grey Parrots that were rescued from a smuggler in Cameroon.

Madagascar's unique wildlife are highly valued in the illegal trade market. Eight of the tortoises found, called Ploughshare Tortoises, are among the rarest in the world and are valued at as much as $10,000 each. Conservations estimate that only 1,000 living Ploughshare tortoises exist in the world and that if their illegal trade continues, the species will be extinct in 10 years.

In total, the 320 tortoises are valued at $200,000 in the exotic pet market.

Of the 320, 20 have been returned to their natural habitats. The Durrall Wildlife Trust is caring for the remaining tortoises before they are returned to the wild.

Had they not been rescued, it's likely the animals would have ended up in Bangkok or Thailand – cities where tortoise is a delicacy.

I'm glad that they were able to stop it this time but it will probably continue. Many animals will become extinct if this cannot be prevented.

The greed of these smugglers is horrible. The effects on nature due to their illegal trade is never a consideration. I hope that all the confiscated tortises are able to be returned to the wild and continue to flourish. These areas should be better patrolled but then of course this too takes funding and education.

I saw something about this on "Planet in Peril" Anderson Cooper 360-It is a very real problem. Animals are at risk of going extinct because of what is happening in other countries. They don't have the funding to get people out to protect the endangered species. I'm glad in this case, the person was caught-and the animals were saved. Most times its just a small fine-They need to make the penalty harsher.

So good to hear that they were rescued. Just another example of self-serving people with no regard for animal life or the ecology. Laws to prosecute these people need to be strenghtened.

It seems as if the human race will not be happy until it takes such fascinating and amazing wild animals and wipes them off the face of the earth - and for what- our own exotic pets or worse - exotic eats!? We have no concept of what will happen to our eco-system as we destroy large parts of it daily. There has to be severe enough consequences for these types of actions to make it unprofitable.

People always want to take advantage of animals. I think that animal smuggling should have the most serious legal repercussions. People try to get away with anything and we know that a lot of people are unscrupulous.

Shameful! Animals need to be protected from poachers like this. It's not enough to pass laws. More money is needed to help support agents in the field who work hard to prevent things like this from happening. So glad they succeeded in these cases.

The exotic pet market is a rough thing. People don't understand how to care for these animals in the first place. Providing more of a market for it isn't responsible...
