'Smart Cat' Survives 75-Mile Trek on Spare Tire

Browse News

GILBERT, Ariz. -- There is nothing unusual about Gil Smith's cat, Bella, using his truck's spare tire as a hiding space, but the feline recently remained there for a 75-mile ride and managed to survive.

Smith was heading from his home in Gilbert to Kearny, Ariz., for business. After his two-and-a-half-hour journey, he got out of the truck and heard what he first thought was a cat in distress.

Then Smith realized with a "sinking feeling," he says, that the noise was coming from Bella.

"I have to admit when she got out of that truck, she was kind of like a drunken sailor," Smith said. "She didn't have her sea legs yet."

Bella, was hysterical, shaky, dehydrated and tired, but unhurt and ate all food offered to her, Smith says. She had taken a nap on the truck's spare tire, which sits on a frame under the truck. Bella was smart enough to know not to jump off the tire as the truck was moving, Smith says.

"She had an opportunity to jump out from there, [but] she would have been so far from home we would have lost her," he said. "The fact that she stayed so close to the truck saved her.

"She's a special cat, very smart. She knew she would be in trouble if she left that truck," Smith said.

As he tried to coax Bella out from her hiding place, Smith says he was worried she would run away.

"There was all of this awful noise coming from this cat, she was hysterical," Smith said.

"She loves to get up on that spare tire to hang out, it's kind of a safe place for her, particularly after it rains," he said. "And whenever I start up that truck in the morning, I always let it run for a few minutes so I can make sure all the animals are clear."

Understanding the necessity of getting his cat home after her ordeal, rather than lug her around rural Arizona in his truck, Smith canceled the business meetings he planned to attend.

"I apologized because I had five appointments with clients that day," Smith said. "I had to take the cat back. I couldn't keep her six or seven hours in a hot truck.

"Things like this remind you that we all get caught up in our work and business, but those things are not as important as other things, in this case a little cat."

An outdoor cat, Bella was adopted by Smith and his wife, Kris, a few years ago, and has a special place in Kris' heart.

"I knew I had two choices: bring the cat home or get a divorce," Smith joked.

Either way, Smith said he has added a new step to his morning routine.

"I check that truck," he said. "Every time I back out of the driveway, I look at that wheel well."

I'm so glad she's okay. That had to be so traumatic to her. Cats like to curl up in tight spaces. It always concerns me when cats are hanging around vehicles. I've heard too many stories of cats getting into car engines and then getting killed when the driver starts the motor. Thank God this kitty is okay.

What a guy! Someone who really loves their cat. Reminds me , quite a few years back my brother brought a cat home to me that had climbed up into my Uncle's car engine while him and my brother was working at a construction site. When my Uncle turned the car off, they heard a cat cry. The engine knocked one of it's eyes out. My Uncle was going to end his suffering, but my brother stopped him and said he would take her home to me. We took her to the vet, he fixed up her eye and she was one of the best cats I ever had.

What a smart cat! And lucky, too....so glad a bump or pothole didn't knock her off her resting spot! I wonder if she will take naps on that spare tire anymore? Loved that her owner cancelled his meetings to take Bella home......some things are just more important than work!

Thank goodness Bella is safe & sound. What a smart girl she is for staying put.
What a great man for putting his Bella before business. Unfortunately, too many people would leave their pets in their cars for the 'ole mighty dollar. What a feel good story this was.

She was s a lucky cat. I'm so glad she had the sense to stay put even tho she was obviously terrified. Happily, everyone displayed good sense after this potential disaster got started.

Glad that the cat was ok after the ordeal she went thru and the owner sounds like a concerned fellow. He did the right thing in taking her home. Hope Bella will steer clear of the wheel well for a while.

I think if he was really concerned he'd let her stay in the house. But you are right, at least he took her home right away and not left in the hot car all day.

well that's a relief that she survived this horrific ordeal. and i'm glad the owner had enough sense to take Bella home instead of dragging her around hither and yon. However, this is why cats need to be inside pets. Risk of disease and decimating bird and wildlife populations aside, there is too much out there that can harm outdoor cats.

I'm with you on that too. We have had outside cats, and have gone through the trauma of having them hit by cars or attacked by other animals, etc. We learned quickly that if you want to keep them (at least where we live), you have to keep them inside.

Yes, I lost a cat to the street once. I wouldn't ever let it happen again with my current cat, Smores! He got lost a couple of weeks ago and I was OUT OF MY MIND! I was so worried about him! But he's safe at home now! :)
