'Smart Cat' Survives 75-Mile Trek on Spare Tire

Browse News

GILBERT, Ariz. -- There is nothing unusual about Gil Smith's cat, Bella, using his truck's spare tire as a hiding space, but the feline recently remained there for a 75-mile ride and managed to survive.

Smith was heading from his home in Gilbert to Kearny, Ariz., for business. After his two-and-a-half-hour journey, he got out of the truck and heard what he first thought was a cat in distress.

Then Smith realized with a "sinking feeling," he says, that the noise was coming from Bella.

"I have to admit when she got out of that truck, she was kind of like a drunken sailor," Smith said. "She didn't have her sea legs yet."

Bella, was hysterical, shaky, dehydrated and tired, but unhurt and ate all food offered to her, Smith says. She had taken a nap on the truck's spare tire, which sits on a frame under the truck. Bella was smart enough to know not to jump off the tire as the truck was moving, Smith says.

"She had an opportunity to jump out from there, [but] she would have been so far from home we would have lost her," he said. "The fact that she stayed so close to the truck saved her.

"She's a special cat, very smart. She knew she would be in trouble if she left that truck," Smith said.

As he tried to coax Bella out from her hiding place, Smith says he was worried she would run away.

"There was all of this awful noise coming from this cat, she was hysterical," Smith said.

"She loves to get up on that spare tire to hang out, it's kind of a safe place for her, particularly after it rains," he said. "And whenever I start up that truck in the morning, I always let it run for a few minutes so I can make sure all the animals are clear."

Understanding the necessity of getting his cat home after her ordeal, rather than lug her around rural Arizona in his truck, Smith canceled the business meetings he planned to attend.

"I apologized because I had five appointments with clients that day," Smith said. "I had to take the cat back. I couldn't keep her six or seven hours in a hot truck.

"Things like this remind you that we all get caught up in our work and business, but those things are not as important as other things, in this case a little cat."

An outdoor cat, Bella was adopted by Smith and his wife, Kris, a few years ago, and has a special place in Kris' heart.

"I knew I had two choices: bring the cat home or get a divorce," Smith joked.

Either way, Smith said he has added a new step to his morning routine.

"I check that truck," he said. "Every time I back out of the driveway, I look at that wheel well."

What a very lucky girl. Most cats will jump and run at the first chance they get. This girl just stayed were she was. Deffently a smart one. I am happy to here it turned out for the best. I have had many a case were it didn't turn out so well for the cat. Good girl Bella.

I'm happy that Bella survived her ordeal and was able to return home in a more conventional manner. The family obviously cares very much about Bella. But I would like to suggest that she become an indoor cat.

This is a funny story that has a happy ending. I can't imagine how terrified that cat was. He gets a thumbs up for putting the cat first. Way to go!

First, I seriously want to give this guy a hug for cancelling his meetings and taking his cat back home. So few people would actually do that anymore, and it shows both what a great guy he is and how much he loves the cat (even with the divorce joke).
Second, what a very smart and brave kitty! I'm glad he made it okay, and that he got home safely.

I love that this owner cancelled his meetings to take care of his cat. What a refreshing counterpoint to all the stories about people torturing animals.

We need more people like this cat's owner!

So happy to read that smart Bella is safe and none the worse for her adventure and gratified that Mr. Smith opted to put the welfare of his cat before his business obligations, but hopefully Bella's people will try to wean her off her preference for the outdoor way of life (difficult as that most certainly will be). There are far too many dangers too many pitfalls out there in the big wide world. Far better be it for her to view life from a nice warm comfortable window seat.

Thank goodness that all turned out so well.As much as cats enjoy the freedom,I still am a firm believer in them being kept as indoor pets,as there are just too many situations that you have no control over.My cat T loves the outdoors, and he gets to go out on occasion with a harness and a leash, but that's it.

Wow, a very bright cat indeed. I hope the cat learns her lesson not to do it again. However, if she does.. she probably just be as smart. I am happy the owner is now double checking his wheels before he leaves to work. I am also happy he decided cancel his important appointments to take his cat back to safety first.

I am so glad she is okay.. and he made the decision based on the cat's welfare to take her right home.. not too many people could do that.. it does bother me however that he said she is an outside cat.. it is so hot here and little water.. the sprinklers could leave a huge puddle in the grass and by 10 am it will be dried up.

I agree, the out of doors is no place for a cat. They are exposed to more diseases, animal attacks, and (obviously) danger from motor vehicles. Not to mention all of the wild birds that an outside cat kills. I love my cats, which is why I keep them inside.

I think Bella will think twice before getting up there to nap again. I would have love to seen his clients faces when he had told them why he canceled their appointments. That's a REAL animal lover. KUDO's

Reminds me of the story of a guy hearing funny sounds coming from his truck and opened the hood to find a pit bull in it. There was a picture of the Pit Bulls head and he was happy and all too. LOL!

Lucky cat!

Thank God the cat survived that long trip. We have a cat my husband found under the hood of his truck. He drove to work and heard a meow when he got out of his truck. When he opened the hood of the truck there was this little kitten. When he came home from work he walked the neighborhood trying to find out who it belonged to. No body claimed him, so we got a cat.

It is so dangerous to have pets around cars. I know that it is hard to not, but even i have had a bad experience with my cat getting up in the engine area. We started the car up & something cut into our cat's shoulder. Thank goodness our cat survived it, but i always felt so bad about that.
