'Smart Cat' Survives 75-Mile Trek on Spare Tire

Browse News

GILBERT, Ariz. -- There is nothing unusual about Gil Smith's cat, Bella, using his truck's spare tire as a hiding space, but the feline recently remained there for a 75-mile ride and managed to survive.

Smith was heading from his home in Gilbert to Kearny, Ariz., for business. After his two-and-a-half-hour journey, he got out of the truck and heard what he first thought was a cat in distress.

Then Smith realized with a "sinking feeling," he says, that the noise was coming from Bella.

"I have to admit when she got out of that truck, she was kind of like a drunken sailor," Smith said. "She didn't have her sea legs yet."

Bella, was hysterical, shaky, dehydrated and tired, but unhurt and ate all food offered to her, Smith says. She had taken a nap on the truck's spare tire, which sits on a frame under the truck. Bella was smart enough to know not to jump off the tire as the truck was moving, Smith says.

"She had an opportunity to jump out from there, [but] she would have been so far from home we would have lost her," he said. "The fact that she stayed so close to the truck saved her.

"She's a special cat, very smart. She knew she would be in trouble if she left that truck," Smith said.

As he tried to coax Bella out from her hiding place, Smith says he was worried she would run away.

"There was all of this awful noise coming from this cat, she was hysterical," Smith said.

"She loves to get up on that spare tire to hang out, it's kind of a safe place for her, particularly after it rains," he said. "And whenever I start up that truck in the morning, I always let it run for a few minutes so I can make sure all the animals are clear."

Understanding the necessity of getting his cat home after her ordeal, rather than lug her around rural Arizona in his truck, Smith canceled the business meetings he planned to attend.

"I apologized because I had five appointments with clients that day," Smith said. "I had to take the cat back. I couldn't keep her six or seven hours in a hot truck.

"Things like this remind you that we all get caught up in our work and business, but those things are not as important as other things, in this case a little cat."

An outdoor cat, Bella was adopted by Smith and his wife, Kris, a few years ago, and has a special place in Kris' heart.

"I knew I had two choices: bring the cat home or get a divorce," Smith joked.

Either way, Smith said he has added a new step to his morning routine.

"I check that truck," he said. "Every time I back out of the driveway, I look at that wheel well."

Keep the cat indoors. Best solution to the problem. I'm so glad the cat survived.

Agreed! If the cat is so dear to your wife, bring it indoors! There's no reason for a "beloved" pet to be kept outdoors, where it is exposed to predators, disease, traffic, and who knows how many other dangers!

Absolutely! The poor little thing. I'd like to strap Gil to my roof rack and take a 75 mile journey...in the rain.

That is a cute story! Poor cat, but at least she was smart!

My cat followed me to school, .5 miles quite a few times. She had a collar and I would get called to the principals office because she would hang out in the building! A few times I had to walk her home during school.

"I knew I had two choices: bring the cat home or get a divorce." Smart man! It's unfortunate that he hadn't made checking the wheel well part of his routine yet, but I think he did the right thing by taking her home immediately.

How scary. Glad he heard her when he reached his destination and she wasn't lost. Hope she's learned her lesson on where to take a nap.

This is amazing. My uncle pulled his 16 foot empty trailer about 5 miles down the road with his cat sitting on it. I bet it looked funny . . . such a big trailer for just one cat!

I so glad to read this ended well. My cats are bad about taking unauthorized rides as well. We can no longer leave our windows down because they like to sneak in the car and go to town with us.

What a very lucky kitty! It is also great to know that the owner cared enough to cancel his business meetings to take her back home to safety.

That is one lucky cat. And yet, this is why I believe cats need to be indoors away from trouble like this.

At least the owner realized his mistake and fixed the problem by taking the cat straight home and now checking the truck each time.

I am so glad this story had a happy ending. And I am also glad that the guy took the cat right home instead of traumatizing it further by locking it in his truck without supervision all day in what was probably pretty hot weather. Two thumbs up for the smart cat and the caring guy!

God Bless Mr. Smith and the beautiful Bella with 8 lives still left. I am so impressed that he cancelled his meetings to take her home, and was so concerned with her well being and her fear. He acted very wisely in coaxing a terrified kitty from her safe haven. We have 1 cat that can't stand being inside, he will only stay outside. We have a five foot fence that he can stay in and be protected by everything, except our dogs who love to play with him. He sleeps on TOP of our house for some reason, so we call him our House cat! Silly cat!

What a great story. When I leave work at the shelter I always check for our 2 shelter cats because Sylvester decided he would hop in the back of my co-workers truck one day. She drove about half a mile before realizing he was there. And, of course, she turned around to bring him back, much to Sylvesters' liking!

What a smart cat not to jump off the truck. It saved her life, and the fact that he took her home and canceled his appointments. Now that's a true animal lover.

I am sure his heart was in his throat when he heard Bella's cries - I cannot even imagine how she or he must have been feeling. Thank God that she was safe!

What a lucky cat, and definitely smart. Her best bit of luck is having a caring owner that put her needs first. I hope Bella got a long, comfortable recuperation, hopefully with lots of love and a stay indoors.
