'Smart Cat' Survives 75-Mile Trek on Spare Tire

Browse News

GILBERT, Ariz. -- There is nothing unusual about Gil Smith's cat, Bella, using his truck's spare tire as a hiding space, but the feline recently remained there for a 75-mile ride and managed to survive.

Smith was heading from his home in Gilbert to Kearny, Ariz., for business. After his two-and-a-half-hour journey, he got out of the truck and heard what he first thought was a cat in distress.

Then Smith realized with a "sinking feeling," he says, that the noise was coming from Bella.

"I have to admit when she got out of that truck, she was kind of like a drunken sailor," Smith said. "She didn't have her sea legs yet."

Bella, was hysterical, shaky, dehydrated and tired, but unhurt and ate all food offered to her, Smith says. She had taken a nap on the truck's spare tire, which sits on a frame under the truck. Bella was smart enough to know not to jump off the tire as the truck was moving, Smith says.

"She had an opportunity to jump out from there, [but] she would have been so far from home we would have lost her," he said. "The fact that she stayed so close to the truck saved her.

"She's a special cat, very smart. She knew she would be in trouble if she left that truck," Smith said.

As he tried to coax Bella out from her hiding place, Smith says he was worried she would run away.

"There was all of this awful noise coming from this cat, she was hysterical," Smith said.

"She loves to get up on that spare tire to hang out, it's kind of a safe place for her, particularly after it rains," he said. "And whenever I start up that truck in the morning, I always let it run for a few minutes so I can make sure all the animals are clear."

Understanding the necessity of getting his cat home after her ordeal, rather than lug her around rural Arizona in his truck, Smith canceled the business meetings he planned to attend.

"I apologized because I had five appointments with clients that day," Smith said. "I had to take the cat back. I couldn't keep her six or seven hours in a hot truck.

"Things like this remind you that we all get caught up in our work and business, but those things are not as important as other things, in this case a little cat."

An outdoor cat, Bella was adopted by Smith and his wife, Kris, a few years ago, and has a special place in Kris' heart.

"I knew I had two choices: bring the cat home or get a divorce," Smith joked.

Either way, Smith said he has added a new step to his morning routine.

"I check that truck," he said. "Every time I back out of the driveway, I look at that wheel well."

Our cat took a ride with a friend who was visiting. Jumped into the back of his truck and rode away. We didn't even know that's what had happened until several weeks later. The cat was missing for about 5 days and showed up pretty tired and hungry. We were amazed when the next time this guy came by, he apologized about what happened to the cat. He said when he got home that day, the cat jumped out of the back of his truck. He tried to catch her, but she was too freaked out and ran under his house. He couldn't find her after that. The interesting part is that he lives about 13 miles from us. Quite a journey!

What an ending to a possible horror story! I am glad that the kitty survived. I am glad the owner took responsibility too and put the cat first. It serves to remind us all about checking on our pets before we leave and checking places in our vehicles that animals tend to hide in.

I agree with Anne B. - the cat should move inside to do away with the potential for future problems like this. If they care for the safety of the critter, this is least they could do.

Glad to hear that she is ok after all of that! Good story!

Cats are amazing and they do have 9-lives.

They are prone to getting under and into the motor area of the car too, in cold weather. Always call for your cat before starting the engine if it is an indoor cat and your car is in an attached garage. Never know.

Among all the other hazards that I can think of this is just another example of why people should keep their cats indoor.

This reminds me of the many kittens who have come to us after people driving across the state hear it in the engine of their vehicles. Makes me sad because you don't know if someone is missing them. Microchipping can save the life of a cat by returning them to their families! Microchip your cats too!!! You never know when your cat may slip out....

Wow. I had a friend who's cat was under the hood, sitting on the hot engine for 30 minutes as he travelled to a horse auction. He ended up just being burned on the paws, which was a miracle. It is my biggest fear when I get in my car and I always set the alarm off and honk the horn before I start the engine.

Bella is one smart cat. Riding on a spare tire for 75 miles and not jumping down which I am sure would have killed her. I am glad this story had a happy ending.

Oh, my Boz made a similar trek in my boyfriend's car. Except...it was 75 miles...it was 3 days back and forth to work on a main highway. He wouldn't have survived much longer. He was stuck and had to be removed by some very helpful Animal Control people. He was quite happy to remain at home after that. Way to go, Bella! Now stay out of trouble... :)

I know it's awful, but I'm still chuckling thinking about the cat coming from out of the tire....drunk as a skunk! I'm relieved that she was otherwise ok for the most part!!! That could have been a heartbreaking and tragic ending.

My neighbors 2 cats always end up going somewhere with them b/c the cats are always outside and jump up into the wheel well of the spare tire to sleep. I've told them over and over that there is a law that says all cats are to be kept inside, they keep the cats in for about a day and ten they're out again. The kittie in the story is extremely lucky.

Refreshing. Someone taking responsibility for their critter. So many people run into problems with their cats/dogs/whathaveyou and instead of being responsible, they hit the reset button by taking the animal to a shelter, if the animal is lucky, and then go on with their lives as if nothing happened. Good on him. Cancel the appointments and, if you know a cat hangs out on the tire, take a look, don't just let the truck idle for a while.
