Six Simple Ways to Support Pet Adoption

Easy -- and free -- methods of helping to promote pet rescue.

People who love animals love supporting animal causes. But providing financial support isn't always easy -- or the most effective way to help a shelter or rescue.

Support animal rescue and promote adoption without spending a cent and, often, without getting out of your chair. Spread awareness, earn donations, and give a voice to rescue animals with these six simple steps:

Play to feed homeless animals. Answer a daily trivia question on Freekibble.com. With each right (or wrong) answer, you donate 10 pieces of kibble to shelters and food banks across the country. According to the site, Freekibble has donated over 571 million pieces of kibble since April 1, 2008, and Freekibblekat -- a daily dose of cat trivia -- has donated over 411 million pieces of kibble.

Support your favorite rescues and shelters on Facebook. Click "like" to show your Facebook friends which organizations you support, and spread awareness by inviting them to "like" the organizations, too. Also, keep an eye out for corporate promotions: Companies will donate to charity for each new "like" they receive. For example, in a recent campaign on Facebook, every new "like" on the Spectrum Labs Facebook page led the organization to donate $1 to companion animal rescue efforts in Japan.

Clean out your closets. Call the rescues in your area to find out what is on their "wish list." Many rescues need towels, bedding, paper towels, dog and cat toys, and cleaning supplies. Your stacks of old linens or unused supplies buried in your closets will make a cash-strapped rescue very happy.

Click for animal welfare. Search Change.org or Care2 for petitions that you believe in. Both sites require an initial registration, but once you're registered, you can sign petitions with one simple click. Set up email alerts for the animal-related topics you're most interested in so that you don't have to remember to keep checking the sites.

Shop for shelter animals. The next time you're shopping online, check out theanimalrescuesite.com. The retailer offers everything from clothing to home décor, and purchases provide funds for rescued animals. Even if you're not shopping, visit the site daily to click the purple "Click Here to Give - it's FREE" button. The site's sponsors donate food to shelters with each click.

Volunteer. There are local (and free!) opportunities to help adoptable animals. Walk dogs or clean litter boxes at your local shelter or participate in fundraising walks and runs. With a donation of your time, you will impact the lives of shelter animals.

Thank you for the great ideas to support rescue! As the Executive Director of the Pawtographs Foundation, I have also initiated House Resolution 220 for a National Animal Rescue Day supporting all types of animals across the country. It is currently in Congress with over 30 Cosponsors. To find more information please visit www.pawtographs.org/initiatives.htm.
