Sick dog dies on flight

Browse News

NEW YORK – A Buffalo woman is mourning the loss of a beloved dog that died while on a flight from Atlanta to Buffalo.

A few months ago Charity Young bought an English Bulldog for her friend Andre - to keep him company while he was at school in Atlanta. A few days before Thanksgiving, Andre put the dog, Caleb, on a flight to Buffalo, where he was to stay for awhile with Charity.

But Caleb never made it. Charity says a baggage handler told her the dog was fine, but an hour or so later, she found out he had died.

Ms. Young says the dog had flown once before without issue. But now she says she'd never put a pet on a plane ever again.

The dog was on a Delta Airlines flight – airline reps expressed condolences for the loss of Caleb, and say they're investigating the incident.

A necropsy later determined that Caleb had a heart condition – but Charity says her vet told her the issue is manageable for dogs.

Because flying can be very trying on animals, it is possible the dog's heart gave out due to stress.

When planning to travel with your pet, consider alternatives to placing it in the cargo hold. Often, small pets are allowed in the man cabin.

If that's not possible, driving or putting the dog up in a kennel may be the better option. With the high number of dogs that die or are lost each year while traveling by plane, it's something to seriously consider.

Do you think animals should be transported in plane cargo holds? Should pets be shipped without their owner present?

Very sad for these friends who lost their pet. Even sadder for the poor dog who died in this manner. I hope there is no blame being put forth on the airline or the vet who told her the heart problem was managable. I'm sure it was but under
"normal" circumstances. Extreme stress does terrible things to our bodies as well as our pets. I hope these friends find a new companion to keep them company & find alternative options for when they need to travel. God bless them all for having to undergo a terrible tragedy.

They should never have put this dog on a flight by himself. I've heard so many terrible stories about animals dying in the cargo area. It's a very stressful thing for animals to travel, let alone in the cargo area of a loud, scary plane

I guess the lesson to be learned here is never put your pets on a plane unless absolutely required!!!

I would never fly my animals except right by my side. There are too many incidents like this - the airlines need to change their procedures and raise their standards so that flying is safe for people and animals.

I would go to any extent to travel with the dog by car. I would never allow an animal to travel unescorted on a plane.

I can't imagine putting a dog on a plane several times to go back and forth to keep someone company. I just wouldn't do it.

I have been told to never allow your pet to be placed in with the cargo. This would be very stressful on the animal. I have heard that the temp. changes can be severe and the load can shift easily which can put them in danger. Not a great way to travel with your pet.

I've heard the same thing. Why can't airline companies design a separate compartment in their plane for animals and not just shove them into cargo?

I work for an airline (thankfully we dont ship dogs any more) and would never send my dog this way. They are taken care of, but there are a lot of strange noises and its scary to be in a kennel and put in the belly of a plane. Dont send your pets this way.

I have seen dogs on board with owners. Maybe it costs a bit more, (I don't know) but you can have the security of keeping your dog with you at all times. And it was on a Delta flight, last year (same airline). My wife thought that the dog was so cute sticking his little head out of the carrier that she took a picture.

I would not put my pet in a cargo hold of a plane. I would somehow find another way to transport my pups, even if I had to drive myself.

This is the reason that I would never put a pet in the cargo hold of a plane. I've heard way too many horror stories of this happening. And the stress alone could be enough for a pet to die. Either put the pet under the seat on the plane or find some other way of caring for it while you're away, other than the cargo hold.

Sad story. I would never dream of having my pets fly in the cargo hold of a commercial airliner unless it was a dire emergency. Far too many horror stories abound. I feel for these people, but other arrangments should have been made.

As a flight attendant, I am effected daily by dogs in the main cabin. They bark, they mess, they can often just be simply annoying. But.... I'd rather have them in the main cabin than in cargo. I would NEVER place an animal in cargo, even if it were in tip top health. Animals checked in as cargo are the last to go on, the first to get off- which means, they are often left in thier carrier, on the ramp in the heat, the cold, the rain.... The cargo area temps are colder than the cabin and in the event of a decompression, they are helpless. There is just too much to worry about.

It really is a sad story. NEVER FLY YOUR PET IN CARGO! PERIOD!

This is a tragic story. It sounds like the dog's health issue probably should have been looked into a little more before putting him on a plane.

That's really a shame. Don't dogs/animals need to have a recent health certificate signed by a vet to travel across state lines? Or at least by commercial vehicle?

My nephew moved to one of the Aleutian islands. He and his family had thought they would fly but when they realized the dog couldn't go with them due to difficulty of shipping, they instead traveled cross country, then north by car and then took the ferry to the island. Some people do go to great lengths for their pet. Glad my nephew was one of them.

I imagine it is quite stressful for animals to fly. I don't fly because of a fear of flying but I might if I could have my doxies right there with me.

Flying is stressful on animals. You should get a vet's approval before taking them. If they are sick, they shouldn't fly.

One reason to have a little dog that you can take in the cabin. Would they let you take a bigger dog in the cabin if you bought him his own seat?

If your dog has a heart condition, I think the last thing you would want to do is stress it out. Flying for a dog has to be stressful.....

Knowing the dog had a heart condition....that was very irresponsible of the owner to put the dog through that kind of stress.

Tragic. My opinion is that dogs should never fly as cargo. At a minimum, imagine how frightening it would be for them. When my dog goes on a trip with me, I drive no matter how far the distance.

It's sad that he died but I guess it was no one's fault since he had a heart condition. I feel that owners should be allowed to keep their smaller pets with them on the flight. Larger animals are another thing since they are bigger and may be an issue with no where to go during the flight if they misbehave.
