Shelter Supports Breed-Specific Sterilization Law

Browse News

HAMILTON, OH – Every shelter faces the same tough reality: there are too many unwanted dogs and too few adoptive families. But the executive director of an Ohio shelter hopes to turn the tables on this sad ratio.

Leland Gordon of the Animal Friends Humane Society is calling on Hamilton officials to pass an ordinance requiring residents to spay or neuter their pit bulls.

The county has a prevalence of pit bulls. According to Butler County Chief Dog Warden Julie Holmes the county has a pit bull problem. She contends that it stems from owners wanting the breed as a status symbol or even for dog fighting.

Fifteen pits came to Gordon’s shelter alone this past weekend. Unfortunately, if the animals are not adopted, they are put down.

The director said the problem is that pits are bred for money, but that they are abused to make them aggressive and then are often neglected or abandoned.

But this issue, Gordon believes, can be reduced. He pointed to San Francisco, where shelters took in a quarter fewer pit bulls after mandatory sterilization.

Holmes agreed that if people are made to have their pit bulls fixed, those who breed them for less than honorable intentions cannot become pit bull owners in the first place.

“If you truly love the dog, or the breed, you’re going to take care of it regardless of whether they’re spayed or neutered, and that’s what we wan to see,” Holmes said.

The mandatory spay/neuter for Pitts is a great idea. Even if the REALLY need to do that for all breeds, just doing it for pitts is a good start. Plus, Pitt-bulls are bred mostly for dogfighting, so the law would slow that down. And any Pitts that come into shelters are very likely to be euthanized, because of their bad reputation. I'm glad they've passed the law.

Every shelter should sterilize every dog that comes in, that's a given. However, BSL's against pit breeders are just wrong. Laws should focus on punishing puppy mills and animal abusers, not just one specific breed. There were just stories about two huge puppymills busted, all tiny pomeranians and yorkies and the like, all crammed together in a small space and being bred by the hundreds. I don't hear any legislation calling for mandatory sterilization of these dogs.

I also do not support breed-specific legislation, in this case however, this may be viewed as a first step toward the goal of universal sterilization. It is unfortunate that the pit bull breed has attained such a negative reputation in the general public- all thanks to those among us with less than admirable animal rights goals. If we cry out against abuse, misuse, & cruelty against pitbulls (or any breed) is it not appropriate to try to humanely limit their numbers to prevent the growth of these problems? That is what the spay/neuter issue is all about. This is a better option than trying to control & adopt out increasing numbers of pits, and maybe decrease availability to those who do not truly value these animals.

I'm not big on breed specific legislation, very prejudicial. Affordable Spay/Neuter Clinics would help solve the problems for all breeds.

Terrible policy! All breeds should be sterilized, not just ones that humans deem as dangerous, unadoptable, etc etc.

In this instance, It might actually cut down on those fools who only want this breed for the wrong reasons.

I dont agree with the breed specific... I think ALL pets should be spayed or neutered.

I think it is absolutely a must that animals be spayed and neutered. Shelters are already so crowded and this would at least help a little.

they need to be fixed

I have no idea why people would think it's impressive to have animals fight each other. How they feel that makes them a bigger man is beyond me.

Every pet should be neutered.

Here's an idea - spay and neuter every pet that comes into that shelter, thereby preventing over-population of ALL breeds and hopefully within time, the shelter won't have to euthanize animals due to space.

I believe all animals should be spayed or neutered! This shelter may have an over load on pits, and down the road it's poodles!

I believe all breeds and mixed breeds should be spayed or neutered unless it is an inspected breeder. Not just breed specific. I get so tired of Pit Bulls getting a bad reputation. It isn't there fault, it is the way they are raised. At our shelter we don't release an animal unless they are fixed.

Pitbulls aren't mean its the owner that make them aggressive cause they want it to be a fighting dog! never blame the breed blame the owner cause they made it that way and its sad cause if they are used for fighting they have to put them to sleep cause they don't want someone or another pet to get bit or probably killed. I think pitbulls got a bad rap cause they are used for fighting or bull bait! it depends on how you raise, treat and train your dogs. Pitbulls can be just as loving as a chihuahua, beagle, or any other kind of breed!

Great idea. If responsible owners still want to own a pit bull, they can go to a reputable breeder and buy one of sound body & mind. This law should hopefully cut down on those lowlifes breeding dogs for the ring or just to prance around on the end of a chain wearing a big studded leather collar.

I totally agree with this!!!

I don't think that it should be breed specific. I think all animals need to be spayed or neutered unless you are a licensed breeder. It may be hard to understand this issue unless you work in a shelter like I do and see all sorts of breeds.

I agree. BSL is great on paper, but it's really only the responsible pet owners who will abide by it. And those aren't the ones who are the trouble with backyard breeding and training for aggression. Plus, even if BSL was successfull for all pit bulls, those "bad guys" will just move on to another breed to be the aggressive status symbol. Poor dominant breed dogs - Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Chows, etc... Spay/neuter of EVERY animal is truly the answer.

As much as you never like to target specific breeds, this one does make sense. It's the reality of the situation in our country today and probably for years to come. I'd rather have mandatory sterilization that have to put so many of these dogs down.

I'm conflicted. Breed specific sterilization doesn't sound like a good thing, but maybe it's needed in this case. I don't know.

Those who breed them for less than honorable intentions may not be able to breed them, but they'll buy them because they can make money off of them or they will steal them. One way or another they will get what they want.

Why be breed specific? Follow suit of other states and require sterilization of all dogs. Don't punish the breed for the stupidity and greed of humans!
