Service Pet of a Different Color

Browse News

When Patty Cooper's dog Tippy died, she was so distraught that she decided to seek out a new breed of service pet – particularly one with a longer life span.

So she chose an animal that may seem out of the ordinary – a miniature horse, named Earl.

Cooper is confined to a wheel chair. She has celiac disease, a disorder that has weakened her bones.

Today for mobility, she relies on a wheel chair and plans to attach a device to Earl's harness - which will allow her to be pulled along.

The 50 year old lives in Warren, Vermont, in an apartment complex whose owners have a small issue with a horse living in the building - but Cooper says negotiations on the subject are going smoothly.

She's working on accommodating the apartment to her pet's needs. And since he's about the size of a large dog, it may just work out.

In the meantime, Earl is staying at a nearby farm, where he's recovering from a recent neutering. Cooper visits him there daily.

Cooper says she and her horse have become very close. And with an average life span of 50 years, the one-year old horse has a lot of life to live.

It's an interested story. The horse will almost certainly outlive Cooper now. I hope that she has plans for his future if she is unable to care for him or if she dies.

I was astonished when I first read about minis as service animals a few years back. But it really does make sense because of their longer lifespan. It seems that it's really working out. Genius!

i was surprised, too.
I always wondered why they put those wierd little sneakers on them. i know it's for non-slip properties, but couldn't they devise some soft rubber horse shoes to be applied? Those little sneakers look like they wold trip up the horse.

I think this is great. I'm glad the apartment owners were willing to allow her to have the horse. Very nice.

This is definately a therapy animal of a different color! I can't imagine how even a small horse will adapt to apartment living (house training??), but I'm happy that this woman found a animal that she has bonded with. I can sympathize with her desire not to lose an animal she has become very close to ~ we've all been there.

By service pet I am assuming it is being trained to pull her rather than fetching and more complicated tasks that a service dog can do. If a miniature horse serves her needs, then that is fine. Hope she lives on the bottom floor though or the downstairs neighbors may not be too happy.

And she'll need a fair size "poop bag" for scooping up the poop.

Wonder where it will be excersized and who is doing the training?

I agree. A lot of thought and planning needs to go into this plan, because owning a horse - even a miniature one- is MUCH different from owning a dog. I hope all turns out well.

This was on TV on the news. I think any animal can be trained by the right person. I guess the only thing is that a mini is still a horse and horses are a little different than dogs in they way they socialize and other things. I hope this works out for the lady!

Years ago I saw a program that used miniature horses for such things. I seem to remember that they can have some health issues too though. But, if it works, then more power to those using them. I am sure the companionship is great, they are suppose to be very smart too.

I hope it doesn't become a trend! There are all sorts of city and municipal regulations as to where people can own livestock/farm animals, and despite all of the comments on this discussion board that the horse is really cute (and he is), that should not be the motivation behind getting one. Horses take a LOT of work and care and are quite expensive.

it would just be easier to get another dog, it may live longer than the last one instead of trying to fight to get a miniature horse allowed

I think it's wonderful. Miniature horses can be trained just like dogs. They're very smart. I do think that perhaps she should live in a small house instead of an apartment though. You do need to think of your immediate neighbors in apartments and I think the horse should have a yard to roam around in and exercise.

Can they be trained to help as well as a dog?? or is it just a companion? I have family members with Celiac disease and as far as I know it doesn't cause problems to the extent of needing a wheelchair, I wonder what else ails her? These little horses are really neat though aren't they?
