Second Dog to Die at Petsmart Grooming in Six Months

Browse News

CALIFORNIA – In a Bakersfield California Petsmart this week, a dog died while getting groomed – marking the second death for the chain store's grooming department in recent months.

The last animal to die was an English bulldog named Brutus from Tucson, Arizona. Brutus' owners believe the dog was accidentally strangled as employees attempted to clip its nails. That incident happened last April.

This week a cocker spaniel belonging to Janie Phillips died accidentally – Phillips believes a muzzle used during the cleaning was too tight. Petsmart claims the device was properly fitted.

Phillips said she and store employees rushed the dog to a nearby vet – but it was too late.

Phillips initially decided not to have an autopsy. She later changed her mind, but by then it was too late – the dog had been cremated.

Petsmart is investigating the incident – and says it will work with Phillips should she choose to get another dog.

Meantime, Phillips has not pursued legal action – although she says she has spoken with an attorney.

this is terrible. Didn't they notice a dog reacting to get suffocated while being groomed? In all honesty, they should be put out of business. Sue them!

I don't trust them, so I don't have my dogs groomed there. They are in a hurry and how much training have they had?

It seems a tragic story but still could be a coincidence and not a trend in the Petsmart chain. i usually only bring my dogs to small family grommers where I stay with them while they get their nails done. I think more information should be determined before any conclusions are made and guilt laid on someone.

An English bulldog accidentally strangled as employees attempted to clip its nails? How does that happen? And now a cocker spaniel died accidentally- from a muzzle that was too tight. What does Petsmart have to say about these 2 recent incidents? Sounds fishy to me. I don't think we are getting the whole story. Sad for both owners to lose their loved ones in such a horrible way. Who would have thought that death could occur at a groomers?

I think before judgement is made, it's important to look at the facts. Vets are going to lose animals in their care, just as sure as mistakes will happen. Speaking statiscally, and on average, I wonder what 2 dogs is compared to all the pets they see. And how that compares will other pet stores and vets around the country - many of which do the grooming procedures Petsmart does as well.

Makes you think twice about who grooms your animal. I think that at those larger places who have such a high turnover rate of employees, it is hard to get experienced groomers. Hopefully these are two isolated incidents and Petsmart will learn their lesson and not let inexperienced groomers work on animals.

I think you make a good point about large businesses having higher turnover. It is possible that they can't instill the same sincere concern in employees that are coming through so often and then leaving. I guess as an employee in a vet clinic, I do wonder the details of what happened--I know that sometimes things are very different than how they sound, and I would hate to be badmouthing someone who actually cared and just made a genuine mistake. It is a hard issue to make up my mind on. It is a sad reason for an animal to die..as if there is a good reason.

Too bad for all concerned...it is tragic to lose a pet under these circumstances. Yes, accidents do happen, but that is why we have to carefully monitor pets when working with them.

Though some handlers may mistakenly put a device on too tight, there are often times pets are so stressed and afraid they develop life-threatening conditions caused by strain, stress and anxiety. Hopefully, any poor work habits will be corrected immediately.

How couldn't the groomer tell the animal was in distress? I would be really following up on this, there's no way another animal can replace the one you previously had. How tragic!

This is tragic. Even if they were just accidents, these are living beings and deserve to be treated with dignity and care. I hope the episodes are being investigated and the employees involved are being held accountable.

How very sad. If Petsmart had a camera in the grooming salon, they would know exactly what happened to these two poor dogs. They would also know
how the animals are being treated at their place of business.

Wow! I find it difficult to believe that these dogs accidentally died and PetsMart employees didn't notice that the dogs were choking or couldn't breath. I shop at PetsMart quite a bit, but I know I won't have my dogs groomed there any time soon. How unfortunate.

I agree that accidents happen but maybe if the Petsmart people were better qualified or maybe paid a little moer attention to what they were doing the accident could have been avoided. One accident is fine but more than one in "recent months" calls for something to be done.

If it were not a big chain like Petsmart, would it have made the news? That's really sad for the dogs and their owners though. I've taken my dog to Petsmart (for nails and ears only) and it makes me think twice. I'm sure Petsmart will suffer greatly from this publicity and training efforts will be put into place.

Petsmart is a huge chain; they can't be blamed as a whole for these incidents. They hire many different groomers, and some are more professional than others (like at all chains). As the owner of a dog that requires frequent grooming, I made it a point to have her groomed every 4-6 weeks throughout her first year, though I thought the puppy coat was adorable. Why? So she would readily accept grooming. I also talked to other people to find a groomer that was knowledgable and kind. My dog loves visiting the groomer, looks fantastic when she comes out, isn't nervous or stressed and suffers no trauma. It's just good training. Unfortunately, if you've adopted an adult or rescue dog, you have a lot of work to do to get them there, but an understanding groomer working with the dog frequently can typically bring it around. Pay attention to where you leave your precious pets!

What a sad story. I would be devastated if this happened to my dog! It is hard to say if this is a problem just at Petsmart. I am not excusing them, for there is no excuse for a pet being entrusted into a groomer's care and dying in the process. I wonder if this happens in the same short period of time on other grooming parlors. Perhaps the problem is bigger than we realize.

Petsmart and Petco groomers do go through a training period, but the groomers assistants, who do most of the nail trimming and bathing, don't. If they did, these stores would have to charge a lot more than their Big Box prices.

This is awful I would sue. You trusted these people to take care of your dog while he was getting groomed. If this is an ongoing thing I belive that petsmart should be very cautious of the people that they hire.

I think that this lady should sue, seing as this is the second time in less than a year that there has been an incident with petsmarts grooming department. I also thing that petsmart should be watched very closely and inspected, there employees should also have alot more training before starting there job.

This story makes me wonder why people bring their pets to chain stores for grooming. I have never heard of an incident of this type happening in owner operated grooming salons. It makes me wonder about the qualifications of the employees in these chain grooming facilities

It is very sad that two dogs have been lost. But that is two out of hundreds of thousands of dogs at hundreds of Petsmart locations. There could have been neglect, but there could also have been underlying undiagnosed health issues that would have killed the dogs one way or another. It would be wrong to rush to judgement without all the facts. There are good and bad groomers everwhere. The important thing is to know who is handling your dog.

I think people need to start researching more. In Maine you can get your grooming "license" online. You never even have to touch a dog, that makes me nervous. I think people should request staying while their dog is being groomed, then they can be aware of how their dog is treated.

While this is sad, it was one incident at each of two, out of of several hundred, Petsmart stores. While there could have been some neglect involved, there could have also have been underlying health issues that would have had the same result no matter what type of stress the pet was placed under. Two incidents, while too many for the heartbroken owners involved, out of the hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of pets groomed at Petsmart annually, would hardly indicate a dangerous trend. There are good and bad groomers working everywhere, I think the important thing is to know the person working on your dog.

Are the groomers at Petsmart Licensed in their state? Do they have to be? Are they pet lovers? I'd rather take my pet to a groomer that I know whom own their own grooming place where you can get referrals from past and present customers.

My two dogs have short hair so don't get groomed. They do get their nails clipped. I stand next to them during the procedure and make sure no accidents happen. Petsmart is not the only shop that hires "bad" groomers. We all need to keep our eyes open.

The next time something like this happens to someone, they should definitey get an autopsy. Considering the repitition of dying dogs, someone should find out WHAT is causing it.
