Second Dog to Die at Petsmart Grooming in Six Months

Browse News

CALIFORNIA – In a Bakersfield California Petsmart this week, a dog died while getting groomed – marking the second death for the chain store's grooming department in recent months.

The last animal to die was an English bulldog named Brutus from Tucson, Arizona. Brutus' owners believe the dog was accidentally strangled as employees attempted to clip its nails. That incident happened last April.

This week a cocker spaniel belonging to Janie Phillips died accidentally – Phillips believes a muzzle used during the cleaning was too tight. Petsmart claims the device was properly fitted.

Phillips said she and store employees rushed the dog to a nearby vet – but it was too late.

Phillips initially decided not to have an autopsy. She later changed her mind, but by then it was too late – the dog had been cremated.

Petsmart is investigating the incident – and says it will work with Phillips should she choose to get another dog.

Meantime, Phillips has not pursued legal action – although she says she has spoken with an attorney.

Obviously they are doing something wrong, or these dogs wouldn't have died. Petsmart needs to review their proceedures and make some changes. We need to be able to trust groomers when we leave our beloved pets with them for the day without our supervision.

I would never take my dog to a large chain store like Petsmart to be groomed, we use a small family owned groomer. Just from walking through the new Petsmart in our area, it seems that their staff is undertrained, too young for this responsibility and think of this as just a job, they really don't care. The first thing I would have done would have been an autopsy!

No matter who the groomer is you have to really check them out. I once had a groomer that over clipped ALL of my dog's nails and did not mention it to me. When I got home I let him out and he came back with bloody feet. This is NOT acceptable to me. After that happened I heard that the same groomer had left a poodle in the drying kennel to long and it died. However, there are GOOD groomers out there. You just have to look hard to find them.

That is horrible! It sounds like more care should be taken to screen groomers.

You just dont expect to take your pet to the groomer and come back to find them dead. I just dont know what I would do if that ever happened to me.

Wow, sounds like they need to investigate their employees in the grooming departmnet. This is scary, you would never think this is something that would happen when you take your dog to be groomed.

I recently took my dog for grooming and they wouldn't accept him because he was on anti-anxiety medication at the time. I think they take all appropriate steps to prevent accidents. How many animals die accidentally in vet clinics each year? You just don't hear about it as you would this story because Petsmart is a major corporation.

Would sueing really help? I hope someone atleast investigates the stores or atleast the people doing the work. They should have classes or something. Theres no need for pointless deaths.

petsmart needs to be more careful who they hire there is no reason for a dog or any animal to die they need to pay but that wont bring the dog back.

Too often pets are left at grooming facilities without the owner investigating the practices of said groomer. Too often chain store gooming sites hire unqualified groomers. The result is not often death, but other injuries and mistreatment of pets do occur. Know your groomer well, or ask to watch the groomer while your pet is being groomed.

This occurance is unacceptable to me - I have been at pet smart when a groomer handled an animal in a way that was wrong. I believe it is time that Pet Smart not only review their training of each employee, but they need to have a supervisor that monitors the groomers at all time to insure that the animals are being handled correctly.

The viewing windows do not do any justice for the animals being groomed at PetSmart. Anytime I am in PetSmart I see the poor animals through the windows who appear nervous, shook up, and very anxious. Just because you have a view of whats happening does not mean the groomers know what they are doing.

It's because of terrible stories like this that I have a mobile groomer come to my house. When using a groomer one has to be very careful and observe how animals are treated at the facility.

I hope Petsmart is hiring experienced groomers... things like this can happen, but this seems too odd. You're better off taking your pets to their Veterinarian to have these things done.

First time, just how can you clip a dogs toenails and not notice that it is choking to death. Second time, someone is an idiot.

How horrible for both Janie Phillips and the owners of Brutus - this is something I cannot begin to imagine. If these incidents occurred at the same store then of course a complete investigattion needs to be undertaken there . Pet Smart has hundreds of stores across the country perhaps they should be sure to conduct classes in the appropriate handling and care especially of what the groomer decides is a difficult pet so that this will NEVER happen again.

Two different stores and it totally amazes me that they did not know they were choking the dog, or it was in distress? There's no excuse for this.

PetSmart does a lot of good things and our pets can pass in the hands of a skilled veterinarian. It is unfortunate yes, but sueing does, bring the animal back and I'm sure Petsmart will do all they can to make it up to these people. Maybe proper training is the key.

My heart goes out to the owner. I can't imagine how awful it must be to lose a pet this way. They surely weren't thinking clearly when this happened and thus may have not made the best decisions. I also must say I would not leave my beloved dogs with anyone to be groomed. If I can't be there then they don't get left there. My little ones have to depend on me to make these decisions for them and I am not leaving them alone to be groomed. My vet does my dogs nails while I watch. It cost a few dollars more but I know what is happening. And I do know that PetsMart has window when this can be done easily. I do feel so badly for this person losing their dog. I'm sure they are feeling very badly for having placed their trust in the groomer. I'm so sorry.

When I was in Petsmart last, I looked through the clear glass grooming area and noticed that a small dog appeared to be tethered on the grooming table by a noose type rope around its neck. I asked the check-out clerk if that was safe and she said there were not any problems with it and yes, it seemed to be safe. It bothered me enough to ask and I wondered about the use of this type constraint at the time. Hmmm...apparently, their restraints are not safe? What I know for sure (as a famous personality states at the end of her magazine), is that I would be horrified to lose my dog in this manner!

This is a shame. I guess the real question is...were the employees properly trained in restraint and handling? If not, then the store has opened itself up to multiple lawsuits.

Very, very, very sad. Review and change how they train their staff would be a good start. If the dog is so hard to groom then the staff should stop and requet that the owner come take the dog home.

How sad. Suing will not bring the dog back but perhaps will change the conditions at this store. Perhaps better training of the employees would help.

I dont understand how you can "accidentally strangle" a dog when you try to clip their nails. There must have been a ridiculous amount of force used. I feel so sorry for these poor babies and their owners. Maybe petsmart should evaluate their dog grooming employees better. Anyone who has to strangle a dog to clip its nails doesn't need to be grooming animals.

I am one to say that we need more information before making a judgment. However, it is quite unusual that this is the second time this has happened at this same location. Something bad happening once is an accident. Something happening a second time....this definitely deserves an investigation. If I had a dog, I'd be hesitant about bringing it in there.

This is very trajic. The two deaths may not be relate in any way. They definately need to check the groomers and if they are qualified enough and if it was the same grommer both times.

I love shopping at the big pet store chains, but I would never even consider having my dog groomed at one unless I could stay right by his or her side for the entire grooming process.
