Second Dog to Die at Petsmart Grooming in Six Months

Browse News

CALIFORNIA – In a Bakersfield California Petsmart this week, a dog died while getting groomed – marking the second death for the chain store's grooming department in recent months.

The last animal to die was an English bulldog named Brutus from Tucson, Arizona. Brutus' owners believe the dog was accidentally strangled as employees attempted to clip its nails. That incident happened last April.

This week a cocker spaniel belonging to Janie Phillips died accidentally – Phillips believes a muzzle used during the cleaning was too tight. Petsmart claims the device was properly fitted.

Phillips said she and store employees rushed the dog to a nearby vet – but it was too late.

Phillips initially decided not to have an autopsy. She later changed her mind, but by then it was too late – the dog had been cremated.

Petsmart is investigating the incident – and says it will work with Phillips should she choose to get another dog.

Meantime, Phillips has not pursued legal action – although she says she has spoken with an attorney.

I have to believe that these two incidents are just a coincidence and not part of a bigger problem. I've always been very impressed with Petsmart's facilities, and they seem to go out of their way to help animals. At my local Petsmart, you have the option of donating $1 every time you make a purchase, and they frequently house SPCA of Southwest Michigan and other animal rescue groups' cats in order to give the animals maximum exposure and a better chance at getting adopted. Perhaps they do, however, need to re-evaluate how well they're training their grooming staff; I'm not sure I'd take my animals to Petsmart for a procedure like that.

Very disturbing! Why is this allowed to happen? I wonder if it was the same groomer both times!

This is sad, especially since it is the second one in six months. Hopefully, things will be stepped up at Petsmart, and people will be aware of these incidents.

This warrants closure of the grooming section at a minimum! What is the extent of groomer training? They should be state certified to reduce irresponsible acts

If this is the second incident at the same location of PetSmart, this business needs to seriously re-evaluate and re-vamp it's grooming department. Something is seriously not right. My heart and prayers go out to the owners of the two dogs involved.

I'm a pet groomer of 10+ years. Accidents happen. You are working with sharp objects on a moving target. Think about it like hunting, you shoot for the target but don't always hit it. Having dealt with similar situations, it's always the groomers fault. Yeah right! No one ever stops to think that their dog may be an uncontrollable nightmare. Yes at home shes an angel but at the shop a holy terror. I don't blame the animal, I blame the owners for not teaching their dog how to behave. If you start and maintain grooming techniques with your dog you will never have a problem, sadly though, most don't. If more people would TRAIN their dogs a lot less of this would happen. I am however sorry for these peoples losses either way.

Unless you've ever been a dog groomer, you have no idea how quickly a dog can go from sweet and lovey to completely insane in seconds flat (especially when it comes to clipping their toenails). Accidents do happen, and unless the folks who cut your pets' nails do it right in front of you, you have no idea what forms of restraint they may be using that you don't see.

Two is too much/ Petsmart should have investigated after the first dog died. As far as I am concerned, now they have no excuse. NO ONE should bring their beloved pet to them for grooming.

While I think that this was a horrible tragedy- I don't think that all Petsmart groomers are bad. I take my dogs to the local petsmart here for grooming and I trust them 100% with my dogs. The manager in the grooming department here always lets people stay with their animals and even encourages them to. I will never take my dogs to anyone else.

I used Petsmart's grooming services when I had my dog and never had a problem. The girl that washed her was very nice and Sadie loved her. However, I do believe it is every grooming places responsibility to make sure someone is watching a dog at all times while being groomed. I do believe this woman should do something so this doesn't happen again. She can't replace her dog but she can make sure the next person who brings their dog in to be groomed doesn't end up in a body bag.

This article is not clear as to whether both incidents were at the same store. If they were, then the grooming facility needs to be shut down and an investigation into what these groomers are doing should be started immediately.

As a groomer for PetSmart, I have to say this: what happened was tragic for the families, BUT THAT WAS AN ISOLATED EVENT AT ONE STORE. Not all salons are like that! I LOVE my job there! We are hired on as Bathers, where we are only booked dogs that come in for Bath n Brush packages. After several months of proving ourselves as Bathers, we are sent to PetSmart Stylist Academy, held at another store in the city. When we complete Academy, we must complete 100 successful grooms under supervision before we are considered "PetSmart Certified Groomers". I've been a PetSmart PetStylist for a year and a half now, and this is definitely a job that requires a great deal of patience, skill, behavior knowledge, and confidence. The English Bull Dog breed has a HUGE issue with collapsing tracheas. That's their breathing tube. They have a MULTITUDE of health problems due to overbreeding, and in many, the life expectancy is around 6 years. In a lot of them, the trachea can be as big around as a drinking straw. with more severe cases, the dog can be running around at the dog park, panting and snorting, and pass out from lack of oxygen (this is a true story told to me by the aforementioned Bulldog's owner). It is HIGHLY likely that this dog was thrashing around during the nail trim, panting and freaking out, and perhaps, the bather handling him didnt recognize the signs of stress in an OEB. She should have. Once the trachea collapses, the dog can strangle. This is one reason my store keeps Old Englishes in the most visible kennels, so we can be constantly checking on them.

As Groomers we aren't perfect, and yes, there are those that do it for the money, not out of the joy of working with dogs and people. But customers can tell someone who truly enjoys grooming their dog and does a good job at it, and hey--you can ALWAYS request a particular groomer. If you're uncomfortable, express that to your groomer--I ALWAYS let concerned parents watch from the window, so long as they watch from somewhere where their dog wont see them and start jumping up and down and dancing on the table. If you don't like what you see, leave and never come back. But please dont assume all PetSmart PetStylists are ignorant, untrained, impatient dog abusers who are only in it for the money. Most of us truly care and will go to any reasonable lengths to make grooming a low-stress, satisfying experience for the dogs we groom and their parents as well.

The problem as I see it is that not enough training is provided in this big-box store and the employees have less incentive to care as much since they are not on the same intimate level with pets and owners as small local groomers are.

Wow, I know a groomer and she has told me stories of uncooperative dogs. I think if the pet owner knows that "fido" does not like its nails being clipped then they are responsible to let the groomer know beforehand so the groomer can take appropriate measures when grooming like 2 people working with the dog. As one previous comment indicated, it is more relevent if these incidents happened at the same pet smart.

Geeezzz...I'm not sure taking your pet to a corporate business like this is a good idea for grooming anyway. They try to do too many dogs at a time and trim too fast. Take your dog to someone local you know - if you groom in the first palce. Be interested in see what PetSmart says about this...

How sad! If it were at the same Petsmart as the first incident I would definitely find out why it happened that another pet died. Someone said that the training policies should be reviewed...I agree. Accidents do happen, but when it's your pet involved, nothing else matters but finding out why. When I dropped my dog off to be groomed at Petco I told them to call me if they have ANY problem with her BEFORE they try to solve a problem that might occur.

Nothing again Petsmart in particular but I wonder how well these big chains screen and train their grooomers.

Then again you need to be very careful of who you leave your animals with for any kind of treatment or service

Our dog died at Petsmart on 25 July, 2007. The necropsy showed nothing founded. The idiots at Petsmart were only claiming half responsibility in our dogs death. Below is a link of the news interview with Fox News 7, Austin, Texas.

Taking your pet to one of these stores to get groomed is like taking them to any other big box store. They should stick to selling pet products, THAT they are good at. Usually these big box chains like this believe the more groomers, the more money you bring in. The only problem I see with that is that you don't know who your groomer is and how experienced they are. These situations sound like they stem from having a groomer who lacked the experience of handling a dog who does not like being groomed. An experienced groomer would know how to calm an animal, kinda like how I've seen hair dressers calm a child who hates getting their hair cut. It takes a certain touch.

Oh how terrible to lose your pet in an accident like this. It's exactly why I would never leave my dog in the care of a stranger. I'm sure the owner would have noticed signs from the dog that could have saved the dogs life. Unlike the groomer, who probably thought the animal was just protesting being groomed.

Petsmart should stay with the things they are good at, such as supplies and food. One of our local Petsmart stores has doggie daycare and scares me each time I go into the store. They will have over 20 dogs and one human in a room. All they need is one aggressive dog and everyone will be out of control.

I think that Petsmart should conduct an investigation into these occurrences. Part of the problem with having procedures performed where there are not trained professionals is that they do not know the correct procedures for doing things. Tethering or restraining a dog while trimming their nails that you are not familiar with can always lead to problems. When I worked for a vet, we were not allowed to tether the dog while we were cutting its nails to prevent incidents such as that. Also, I would never take my dog to a place for grooming where a medical professional is not located. There are plenty of vets who share a common space with a groomer. That way if there is a problem, medical assistance can be sought immediately. The owner of the animal should have monitored the situation to make sure that the groomer had everything under control. Prior to leaving my animals anywhere I make sure that the people who will be handling them are competent and treat them the way I would.

MAYBE IT WAS AN ACCIDENT. MAYBE THE DOG WAS AN OLDER DOG OR MAYBE THE DOG WAS HAVING TROUBLE. WHO KNOWS, BUT I AM SURE OF ONE THING. I BET THE GROOMER IS SORRY. I AM SURE THEY DIDN'T MEAN TO DO IT. THERE IS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO BRING THE ANIMAL BACK BUT THEY COULD BUY THE OWNER ANOTHER ONE. I THINK SOME GROOMERS SHOULD HAVE DIFFERNT JOBS. PEOPLE WHO LOVE ANIMALS SHOULD GROOM NOT PEOPLE WHO ARE ANGRY. I LOVE ANIMALS.

I feel that some people need to be mindful of their own pets. Its not Pet Smarts fault for trying to handle the pet. If you were a responsible pet owner you would know that maybe grooming is a stressful event for the animal and that you should take them to a veterinarian to be groomed where they can tranq and medicate the animal so not to stress the animal out to the point of death!!!! Whos cruel? The pet smart staff? or the owner that cannot read the stress level on their pet!

With out a necropsy report nobody should judge the store.Animals of all kinds can die from stress even heart attacks. Most people take their animals to groomers due to they can't control the animal themselves,So they let someone else due it for them. But I do believe on both occassions a necropsy should of been performed to find out why the animal passed..

I'll admit that accidents are bound to happen, but I have reservations about the training and dedication of my local PetSmart's groomers. I've had my dogs (2) groomed there once and they did a good job, but I doubt I'll go back because I got the impression that the employees were there just to have a job. I would prefer going somewhere that thinks of animals as a vocation.

Question: how old were the dogs that died ? Did they have health problems ? Before we accuse someone of murder, we should know all the facts.
I had an older Spaniel that would get so upset when she was groomed that I wouldn't have been surprised if she had a heart attack.
If no one did an autopsy then no one can say for certain what happened. I agree, they need to review how their employees handle the pets to make sure that it isn't their fault.
I think that anyone who chooses to work at at dog grooming business must love dogs an awful lot. So, lets give them a chance to explain first.

They should sue Petsmart. I had a bad experience there once. Took my dog there to get her nails clipped and the lady was to scared to even touch her. I ended up doing it myself and they still wanted money. Of course they didn't get any from me. I am never taken my animals to Petsmart again.
