Russia: Woman has 136 Cats in 3 Bdrm Apt

Browse News

SIBERIA, Russia – A Russian woman from the Siberian town of Novosibirsk says she's the only hope for the community's stray cats.

Nina Kotova has a special affinity for felines. She says if she didn't care for the 136 cats living in her small apartment, they'd die from exposure. Temperatures in her town reach 40 degrees below zero during winter months.

Still, Kotova's three-bedroom apartment is overwhelmed by the critters, giving the appearance of a hoarding case. But in a city where few people keep pets and rescues are a rarity, alternatives are limited.

Of course, feeding time is a frenzy, since bowls aren't an option. Instead, she throws the feed out like a farmer to chickens.

And somehow, it seems to work. Kotova says she first took in a cat while at university. Fifteen years later, most of her income goes to caring for her felines.

Since Kotova manages to keep odors down and the apartment clean, neighbors don't seem to mind the situation. However, one man said the cats can become bothersome at night because they're constantly crying. He thinks they may be uncomfortable living in such confined quarters.

At the time of this report, we were not able to determine if Kotova's cats have been spayed, neutered or vaccinated.

Because the locals know she takes in cats, strays are sometimes left on her doorstep, showing that for needy felines in Novosibirsk, Nina Kotova is the only refuge.

I agree, I hadn't thought of that. I don't know how many spay/neuter programs they would have over there.

I hope these cats are spayed and neutered. I can't imagine having that many cats. And Dad says we have too many!

Good intentions; however, is this any way for an animal to live even if it is being fed and housed?

Poor lady. She is helping in the only way she can. Maybe others will step in to help find a better way and she can still be involved!

I wish there were a way this woman could get some help. Her heart is causing her to do this. I'm sure she would much rather see each of them have a home with a family that can give them the individual attention they deserve. What will happen to all of them when she's gone?

I think this lady has very good intentions, but is she truly saving the cats by having so many in such small quarters. And how are they being cared for medically? There's no way she could afford a vet bill for that many.

I can't imagine trying to care for this many cats, especially in such a small place. I hope she can get some help or find some homes and the cats will receive the care and attention they need.

All this woman was trying to do was to help cats that would have otherwise died in the cold. I hope the community will assist her. Terrible situation. I'm sure she is/was overwhelmed.

Thats so sad. Too bad the city wont help her. Obviously she is doing what they should be doing, but I'm sure their answer would be to kill them.

This is a sad situation where she is trying to help these cats but managed to let it get out of control. Hopefully, someone will step in and help her. I know she is only trying to save them, but this is no way for them to be living either.

I have no doubt that Nina Kotava is a loving caring woman and that she is indeed saving the lives of all those cats. The story reported that it was undetermined if Nina had her cats spayed, neutered or vaccinated. Based on the number of cats and the substantial costs involved, I rather doubt it. But she should certainly be blessed.

Stories such as these are always sad. Folks are just trying to do the right thing, but they don't realize how bad the situation has become for the animals. Hopefully others hearing the story in her area can help out. You can understand her situation if she knows the cats will be killed outside her home.

How could this lady care for all of the cats?Think of how much it costs first the check ups, then the food, then anything else. The cost of all of this would have to be high. could understand her being nice and I think she should get a reward. But the time you should spend with the pets each well at least I would say 25 minutes with each cat to just play and make sure the cat is alright.Yes she may be doing it good to you but to just look at it in another way well It is all bad.

I don't know what to say on this one. I feel sorry for this woman because she is trying to help these cats when no one else would. The animals would surely die in these temps. This is a difficult situation.

I commend her for her compassion, but it is a health hazard, must be a better way to care for all the cats.

That is really gross. It's people like this that cause cats to become ferrel.

Good thoughts but this is way too many cats!

I'm not sure how the Russian gov't handles things, but they need to do something about all these cats. This lady has taken upon herself to take these strays in during the freezing weather, and it looks as if she isn't doing too bad of a job, but 136 cats could be overwhelming for anyone. She needs some help.

I suspect given the economy in Russia there are likely no shelters or alternatives but it seems this is a situation where disease is just waiting to happen due to the cramped situations and the drop offs and near starvation conditions I am sure some of the rescues are in when they arrive. I hope she has access to at least some vet in town or a nearby town that has been willing to neuter or spay but I suspect that may be a long shot also.

Best of luck to her.

I'm not sure how Russia works, but it would be nice if the city would donate a building for a shelter & hire her to run it. Obviously it is a city problem that she is trying to fix on her own.

I think that 136 cats is just too much for a 3 bedroom home. The lady has a good heart but she has to think of the cats. There must be some sort of shelter that would take these cats in and I'm sure some need to be spayed or neutered and medical tests. By her own kindness, she is hurting the cats.

There seems to be quite a few reports like this coming from other countries. They all seem to have a horrible issue with the stray cats and nothing that they can do to really fix it. They do not have the resources that we do.

I hope she is able to care for them properly and has them spayed and neutered-I cannot imagine that people are not complaining with the smell-UGH!

The woman definitley has a big heart. But she may be contributing to the cat population in her apartment if they are not spayed and neutered.
