Robotic Pet Therapy

Browse News

SINGAPORE – The next stage in pet therapy has arrived in the Far East, and puts a unique spin on this already effective treatment method.

According to channelnewsasia.com, a robotic seal named Paro could change the face of pet therapy. Paro, which means robot in Japanese, is designed to interact with patients interested in pet therapy.

Based on a series of 30 posture, tactile, visual and audio sensors, Paro responds to its user much like its living counterpart would. If you call his name, Paro winks with delight. He wiggles when you pet him, but ignore him and he'll get agitated.

The fuzzy tool boasts many attributes that could help overcome some of the issues with live pet therapy. For example, many hospitals don't allow live animals because of potential bacterial risks.

And pet therapy animals require a handler. Even though handlers are often volunteers, they have full time jobs, so therapy is often based around their schedules.

Not with Paro, though. He requires very little maintenance and has anti-bacterial fur to keep those germs at bay. Just put him in any patient's lap and he'll do the rest.

The $4,000 robot will be unveiled this month in Japan, and it's already been named the “World's Most Theraputic Robot,” by the Guiness Book of World Records.

I guess if you're alergic to animals, get yourself a robot dog or cat. But I think real animals would work best.

It's a cute idea but think how much better it might be to have a real flesh and blood therapy animal--cat or dog--at work. If you have patients who are allergic to animals, this sounds like a great compromise solution.

I have to agree with the Gretchen. I would love to seem some independent, peer reviewed psych studies showing that a robot stuffed animal is as effective as a real animal in pet therapy programs. It is hard for me to buy this. I think part of the effectiveness of pet therapy is the knowledge that the pet is a living being that is being given love and is appreciating the love it is being given.

WHAT??? A vibrating stuffed animal instead of a live loving animal? Just give me a flashlight or a popcorn popper if you are not going to let me pet a real animal. Its about as useful.

Well it does seem incredibly interesting but it can't replace a real animal. Robotic reaserch should focus more on things that could really assist people. With all the time and money that went into developing this, who knows what kind of cutting edge technology could have been developed!

well robotics is becoming more and more popular so I guess this is the logical next step. I think real animals might be a little more benificial though.

It might be a substitute in a few rare situations, but the real deal is the way to go - you can't bond with a robot.

I know a robot is less trouble, but I'd rather have the real thing. Nothing is a substitute for the meow of a cat or nudge of a dog's head.

What about the benefits of the warmth and live responses patients would receive from a real animal? I don't think anything could replace the real thing.

I don't care for this idea. This isn't right. It is about real, live animals interacting with people. Not about robots and technology and sterile environments!

I don't know how I'd feel knowing it wasn't a real 'pet.' I mean the point of pet therapy is that it's a real animal.

As long as it works that's what counts. I wonder if medicade or medicare will split the bill since it is used for health purposes. Doubtful.

Interesting question. There are so many hoops to jump through that the medical agencies would find some way not to assist.
