Red Cross Honors Blood Donating Dog

Browse News

GREGORY, Illinois – In less than a week, a 200-pound English mastiff has gone from being a small-town Illinois dog to the sweet heart of international media outlets.

It started on Monday when a dog named Lurch was honored by Livingston County American Red Cross as one of its “Everyday Heroes.”

The award came to the two-year old pooch after he donated blood some 20 times at Midwest Animal Services, including saving one dog who had eaten rat poisoning.

Donating about once every four weeks, the mastiff is hardly phased by having his blood drawn.

‘He just likes all the people hugging him and mauling him at the time, I think that’s what he appreciates the most,” said owner Joni Melvin-Thiede. “He doesn’t realize what they’re doing, he just wants the loving.”

Now, the Red Cross is honoring Lurch for his noble generosity. The award is usually given to people, but the dog’s actions exemplify the spirit of the organization.

“We’re doing something different this year,” Red Cross Executive Director Diane Serra said. “We’re honoring Lurch because he’s actually donated blood.”

The big hearted dog has caught the attention of intense media coverage, including CNN, ABC, the Canadian Press and other media outlets across North America.

In addition to being a cooperative and gentle donor, Lurch spreads his compassion out among patients at the local emergency veterinary clinic. There, he accompanies Melvin-Thiede, where he plays big brother to cats and dogs.

For Lurch and his owner, it’s all about being able to help other dogs whenever they can. That includes rescuing dogs in need.

“We started rescuing pugs 12 years ago at the emergency clinic when pugs would come in and then (we) kind of got connected with pug rescue, and a lot of them just don’t leave,” Melvin-Thiede said.

I never thought about this before reading this article that blood donations were needed for animals also. Glad this lovable dog was honored.

This is something our vets should mention. Since you have to have regular visits anyway, some dogs might make good donors and not mind.

What an important job this guy and others do. This should make us all think about our own willingness to donate blood for our human friends.

Good point. Don't forget to eat some liver a day or two before if you have trouble
giving because of low iron levels.

Our local emergency clinic contacts the local Spca for blood donations. Well adjusted, healthy pets awaiting adoption are carefully chosen. A great way to earn their room and board. Plus if their cage is tagged with "I am a blood donor" it helps them get adopted faster. Everyone loves to adopt a hero!

I am glad that some dogs can donate blood. If they didn't we would be able to save dogs lives. I know if my dogs needed blood and there were no dogs donating blood to them. I'd be really upset.

You make a good point. People who aren't kind of intrinsically wrapped up in an animal field (veterinary clinic, animal shelter, animal control agency, etc...) don't realize some of the really neat stuff that's possible. One of the major pet blood donation centers is near where I live, so it's not new news to me. However, everytime I read one of these heartwarming stories, it reminds me that there still is some decency in the world.

Lurch deserves a medal. I really never thought about animals needing a blood transfusion. I have never heard anyone mention of it until now. I wonder if different breeds have different blood types or how it works. What a interesting story!

Very interesting - do dogs have blood types or can any dog receive any blood. I never really thought about it. What a hero this dog is. but I wonder would he do it if he had a voice in the matter?

I believe that dogs do not have different blood types like humans. That makes it easier to transfuse, no worries about giving the wrong blood type.

Great coverage of a little known public need. How often do pet owners recieve requests from the vets for blood donations during their visits? It's common practice for friends and family of patients in hospitals to get requests to donate blood. Why not be a bit more public about the need for donation? I'm sure there would be an overwhelming response, considering the caring nature of most pet owners...

I think it's great that the Red Cross is honoring a dog for donating blood. This will help bring awareness that not only humans benefit from donated blood, but so do animals!

This is a great story. I'm not sure how it is like using pig valves in human hearts though. The blood they collect from Lurch is not used in humans, only dogs.

gosh, i never thought about dogs (or cats) needing blood donated. maybe vets offices could start a program asking if you would like your pet to donate blood at the time they are getting their physical. i would say yes, wouldn't you?
