Rare Cats Provide Therapy for Veterans

Browse News

MIAMI - Two rare cats are making a big impact on patients at one Florida hospital, where with their owners, they deliver therapy and smiles to some of America's Veterans of war.

Diesel and Charlie Girl are quite the pair. The three-year-olds even have their own strollers for Sunday trips with owners Bruce and Sue Muntz to the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Miami.

“People enjoy just touching (them), feeling the warmth of the animal on their lap,” said Sue Muntz.

"I think it's great," said Lillian Bethel, wife of a veteran.

So does everyone else that meets Diesel and Charlie Girl, two Maine Coons with large bodies and even larger hearts.

“… He's very gentle for being a large cat of like 21 pounds, and he could be jumping all over but he is calm he knows that he's got this gentleman over here,” said Bruce Muntz. “I'm just surprised that he's not giving him kisses on the chin yet.”

Diesel, who weighs in around 21 pounds, and his sister Charlie who weighs in at about 15 pounds, have been volunteering at the VA hospital for two years, bringing smiles to every patient they visit.

Considered the largest breed of domestic cats, Maine Coon cats are dubbed "gentle giants" for their laid-back nature and standout size.

“They are huge,” said patient John McDermott as he laughed. “I've never seen cats that big.”

Diesel and Charlie Girl have been in training since the day they were born. And they're two of the only registered therapy cats in South Florida.

The owners and animals are registered together as "Pet Partners" by the Delta Society of America. They've gone through several rounds of training and testing to make sure they're set to perform in a hospital setting.

“They tested Diesel first, then we had our test for hospital procedures, then it was a test of the two of us together how we work as a team,” said Bruce Muntz. “To make sure that they're going to be safe.”

The cats are trained to sit still and wear a harness at all times, and they're conditioned to never use their claws. All part of a job, Bruce said, that he and the cats take seriously.

“Yes he does, and he knows from the minute he walks in, he's calm, he's ready for pettin’,” said Bruce Muntz.

These cats are proving the power of pet therapy is making a difference for Veterans in Miami.

“They make people happy,” said McDermott.

The Delta Society has registered more than 7,000 dogs as therapy animals across the country.
But Diesel and Charlie are two of only about 200 cats on their list.

I think that Diesel & Charlie are doing a wonderful thing. Thank You to the owners for getting these 2 wonderful Maine Coon cats into this wonderful service work. I hope both cats get loving & relaxation when they get home & that it's not all work no fun! Nursing homes would appreciate having cats or dogs visit as well. I understand the fact that they have to be trained but I always think a cat or dog for company is good too for older folks in a home. A companion animal as long as it's healthy, vaccinated & friendly & trained to sit, heel, come etc could make short visits to residents. Good story Zootoo.

What wonderful cats. I don't think my cats would do this. They are skitish. I don't know if it is training or temperment, but I'm impressed either way.

I have always wanted a Maine Coon cat....I'm wondering if our cat, Rusty, was a Maine Coon....he's gone now, but I'd like to have another one. Does anyone know where I could adopt one?

I just finished watching the pet pulse about Diesel and Charlie Girl....this video brought tears to my eyes. I had a cat once named, Rusty, and another named Puddycat...these two reminded me of mine. I think this is a wonderful idea. I hope and pray, if I ever need it, someone brings me a cat for a visit. God love them.
thank you for doing this.

The 2 Maine Coon cats are beautiful to behold.
I'm glad they are visiting veterans and making their day softer and brighter.
I hope many more cats can have this healing effect on the veterans who have seen too much sadness and pain.

What a wonderful contribution these cats and their owners are making to their local area. I have read on several occassions about the healing, calming powers that cats or animals in general, have in situations like these.

Big cats with big hearts - this is great. Animals have such a calming effect on people. Sometimes just petting an animal can make all your stress go away. I know after a hard day I like to come home and just pet my dog for awhile. She is always happy to see me and loves the attention.

I never heard of cats being good therapy, but I'm glad to see the veterans are enjoying their company.

Just being able to pet an animal that enjoys being with people can change a person's mood from bad to better.

I think it's great that these two cats are involved in therapy. It is fairly unusual for cats to be so tolerant of stressful situations like travel, being in new environments, and meeting many new people. This gives people who are afraid of or don't like dogs the chance to still get the benefits of being around a pet.

Pretty amazing that these cats are secure enough to travel to strange places and perform their therapy work. Mine would be hiding under the nearest bed.
