Rare Cats Provide Therapy for Veterans

Browse News

MIAMI - Two rare cats are making a big impact on patients at one Florida hospital, where with their owners, they deliver therapy and smiles to some of America's Veterans of war.

Diesel and Charlie Girl are quite the pair. The three-year-olds even have their own strollers for Sunday trips with owners Bruce and Sue Muntz to the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Miami.

“People enjoy just touching (them), feeling the warmth of the animal on their lap,” said Sue Muntz.

"I think it's great," said Lillian Bethel, wife of a veteran.

So does everyone else that meets Diesel and Charlie Girl, two Maine Coons with large bodies and even larger hearts.

“… He's very gentle for being a large cat of like 21 pounds, and he could be jumping all over but he is calm he knows that he's got this gentleman over here,” said Bruce Muntz. “I'm just surprised that he's not giving him kisses on the chin yet.”

Diesel, who weighs in around 21 pounds, and his sister Charlie who weighs in at about 15 pounds, have been volunteering at the VA hospital for two years, bringing smiles to every patient they visit.

Considered the largest breed of domestic cats, Maine Coon cats are dubbed "gentle giants" for their laid-back nature and standout size.

“They are huge,” said patient John McDermott as he laughed. “I've never seen cats that big.”

Diesel and Charlie Girl have been in training since the day they were born. And they're two of the only registered therapy cats in South Florida.

The owners and animals are registered together as "Pet Partners" by the Delta Society of America. They've gone through several rounds of training and testing to make sure they're set to perform in a hospital setting.

“They tested Diesel first, then we had our test for hospital procedures, then it was a test of the two of us together how we work as a team,” said Bruce Muntz. “To make sure that they're going to be safe.”

The cats are trained to sit still and wear a harness at all times, and they're conditioned to never use their claws. All part of a job, Bruce said, that he and the cats take seriously.

“Yes he does, and he knows from the minute he walks in, he's calm, he's ready for pettin’,” said Bruce Muntz.

These cats are proving the power of pet therapy is making a difference for Veterans in Miami.

“They make people happy,” said McDermott.

The Delta Society has registered more than 7,000 dogs as therapy animals across the country.
But Diesel and Charlie are two of only about 200 cats on their list.

What a great story. Both dogs and cats are brought into my moms retirement home and she can't wait until they arrive every week. She was telling me that the handlers explain that all of the pets they bring are trained as therapy pets too. What a great program.

Warm story. Beautiful cats. I would think that it might be hard to train a cat to like being in a harness. Someone has done a wonderful job.

Cats are very smart animals. Not many animals can survive on their own. This is wonderful that they are being used to help people. We should see more programs like this using the homeless dags and cats.

It blows my mind that a cat can be trained!! I didn't think it was possible. This is a great story, and they are beautiful cats. the worth of therapy animals has been proven over and over, and the greatest advantage to the animals is that many of them are adopted from shelters, not to mention the programs they now have in prisons to train these dogs.

We have a Maine Coon cat, so I have no trouble believing this. Our cat seems to sense when someone in the household is upset and knows just how to offer comfort. Although I've read that Maine Coons are not "lap kittens," ours insists on sitting on the selected family member's lap at each member's selected time. He takes his job as family counselor seriously.

Great idea. Older people love animals and it is a fact that it helps them. When working in a nursing home we had pets come in weekly. The older people would sit around and pet them for ever. With a big smile on there face. It was uplifting for them.

Therapy cats would indeed be rare, but if any cat could do it, then the Maine Coon could ~ they have reputations for being laid back and sweet natured. And no one deserves TLC more than returning war vets.

I agree that this is a great idea. I think this should be extended not only to veterans hospitals, but especially to nursing homes and childrens hospitals. How great would it be if shelters got together with nursing homes and made it so that every resident who wanted a cat or pet could have one? Now only would the people's lives be better but we would also be saving the lives of animals too! Now that's what I call a win win situation!

HURRAY for Maine Coons!!!!!!!

i have a Maine Coon myself - and, trained or not, he's a great therapy cat for me. i actually am a therapist and friends of mine used to joke that jack "thinks he's a therapist, too." he would "talk" to other cats thru my screen door. he truly is a "gentle giant." :)

pet therapy works - I have seen it first hand myself. I know if I were a shut-in, nothing would make me happier than a visit from a pair of friendly kitties. Now, about training 2 of my cats....... I don't know about that, however, I'm planning on logging into the delta society as soon as I finish this note.
