Rapper DMX Pleads Guilty to Animal Abuse

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Rapper DMX pleaded guilty yesterday morning to one count of animal cruelty in the Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix, seven months after authorities raided his home and charged him with neglect of his 12 dogs.

The hip-hop mogul also pleaded guilty to three additional counts of possession of narcotic drugs, theft and possession of marijuana.

DMX, whose legal name is Earl Simmons, chose to follow through on a settlement, which will allow some of the outstanding charges against him to be dropped.

The ruling marks conclusion of a case that has followed the rapper throughout the year, during which he was arrested several times, only to dodge numerous court appearances.

Simmons' animal cruelty charges stemmed from a raid on his home last spring, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

Phoenix authorities seized 12 Pit Bulls and Pit Bull-mixes during the May search of the rapper's Cave Creek, Ariz., house. There, they uncovered the remains of three other dogs partially buried -- and possibly burned.

While authorities did not identify any evidence of dog fighting on the premise, some of the dogs were without water and food.

Simmons claimed that he had entrusted the dogs to a caretaker, whom he thought was providing accordingly for them.

The raid was initially prompted by reports of animal abuse, but it also led to the seizure of marijuana and various weapons from Simmons' home.

Since the May incident, Simmons had several other charges tacked onto his record.

In April, he was charged with identity theft and theft of services after he used the name "Troy Jones" and an incorrect Social Security number to avoid paying a $7,500 medical bill to a health clinic.

Simmons was also arrested in May for driving 114-miles-per-hour on a suspended license.

Simmons' animal abuse and drug possession court hearing was initially slated for August, by when he had already skipped town to Miami, where he was spotted -- and arrested -- several days later.

He was extradited back to an Arizona jail on Aug. 27, but was later freed with a paid $25,000 bond, allowing him to legally travel to Florida, one of Simmons' public defenders reportedly said.

Simmons will next appear in court on Jan. 30, when, according to a plea agreement, the other charges, including identity theft, will be dropped.

I THINK THIS ARTICLE HAS A LOT OF INFORMATION THAT PEOPLE NEVER KNEW AS FAR AS CHARGES THAT WERE BROUGHT AGAINST THIS RAPPER. BUT AS THEY SA INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. SO THESE ALLEGATIONS COULD JUST BE ALLEGATIONS. WE HAVE TO TUNE IN AT HIS NEXT COURT HEARING TO REALLY DETERMINE IF HE HAS BROKEN ANY LAWS. FOR HIS SAKE I HOPE HE WILL MAKE UP FOR HIS WRONG DOING TO THESE BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS AND DO SOMETHING GOOD FOR THE PIT BULL POPULATION/RACE. I MEAN HE IS A MULTI- PLATINUM RECORDING ARTIST, HE SHOULD DONATE FUNDS TO DOGS THAT REALLY NEED THE HELP AS FAR AS MEDICALLY.

Why is this rapper being so protected?? So much breaking the law! And the dogs!? No doubt a dog fighting ring. Are the authorities afraid of repercussions?? Is he such a celebrity? I never heard of this devil until now.

Didn't Michael Vick claim he didn't have anything to do with the dogs on his property? That he'd rented it to relatives or friends? Just once, I'd like to see one of these animal abusers step up to the plate and admit to their crimes and express a little remorse.

And he says he had a caretaker for them? Why get pets if YOU can't even care for them yourself? And not just one or two, but twelve?!

He should be punished and the dogs taken away from him. Theirs no reason for him to have 12 dogs if he doesn't have the time to take care of them. Maybe someone should neglect him one time and see how he likes it.

Perhaps the record companies need to look into the programs that the NFL has for their "players" on how to be a good role model and deal with all of the money and attention.

I wonder what else is involved in this plea bargain deal. Something has to happen that will hurt him and make him realize it's time for a change.

I'm glad hes pleading guilty to the charges but it makes me sick that just becuase someone has a celebrity status they can get away with so much. There shouldn't be plea bargains. He should be charged with all of his wrong doing just like any other american citizen would be.

I agree that he should be made to do a whole lot of community service in a shelter- supervised; in addition to some serious punishment.

I would not want him working in a shelter with pets who have already been through enough...you can't trust him to be alone with pets. Now...if he is strictly on cleanup duty and supervised, then that'd be cool.

Point well taken. I did say *supervised* while doing community service in a shelter. I am second-guessing my last comment. I don't think he, & others like him, have a conscience nor would being around sheltered animals change his attitude. I also don't think socking him in the wallet is going to hurt him either. I don't know what would besides public humiliation & jail...& why, I wonder, have most the animal abuse charges been dropped when so much evidence was there...

I have a feeling the animal abuse charges were an after thought to the drug charges regardless of what this article reports. Unfortunately the laws that famous people are held to are not the same as the common person.
