Rapper DMX Pleads Guilty to Animal Abuse

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Rapper DMX pleaded guilty yesterday morning to one count of animal cruelty in the Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix, seven months after authorities raided his home and charged him with neglect of his 12 dogs.

The hip-hop mogul also pleaded guilty to three additional counts of possession of narcotic drugs, theft and possession of marijuana.

DMX, whose legal name is Earl Simmons, chose to follow through on a settlement, which will allow some of the outstanding charges against him to be dropped.

The ruling marks conclusion of a case that has followed the rapper throughout the year, during which he was arrested several times, only to dodge numerous court appearances.

Simmons' animal cruelty charges stemmed from a raid on his home last spring, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

Phoenix authorities seized 12 Pit Bulls and Pit Bull-mixes during the May search of the rapper's Cave Creek, Ariz., house. There, they uncovered the remains of three other dogs partially buried -- and possibly burned.

While authorities did not identify any evidence of dog fighting on the premise, some of the dogs were without water and food.

Simmons claimed that he had entrusted the dogs to a caretaker, whom he thought was providing accordingly for them.

The raid was initially prompted by reports of animal abuse, but it also led to the seizure of marijuana and various weapons from Simmons' home.

Since the May incident, Simmons had several other charges tacked onto his record.

In April, he was charged with identity theft and theft of services after he used the name "Troy Jones" and an incorrect Social Security number to avoid paying a $7,500 medical bill to a health clinic.

Simmons was also arrested in May for driving 114-miles-per-hour on a suspended license.

Simmons' animal abuse and drug possession court hearing was initially slated for August, by when he had already skipped town to Miami, where he was spotted -- and arrested -- several days later.

He was extradited back to an Arizona jail on Aug. 27, but was later freed with a paid $25,000 bond, allowing him to legally travel to Florida, one of Simmons' public defenders reportedly said.

Simmons will next appear in court on Jan. 30, when, according to a plea agreement, the other charges, including identity theft, will be dropped.

And people look up to this piece of crap, buy his music and go to his concerts. What is this world coming to. We need strickter laws that give people like this some real jail time and really hit them where it hurts. In the pocketbook. They should make them donate millions to no kill animal shelters and make them volunteer for many hours in a animal shelter.

What is with all the celebraties abusing animals and being bad role models for the younger generation. They should be out there showing people what could be done to help fight animal abuse and donate some of their money for good causes, instead of blowing it on drugs, alcohol, million dollar mansions, and high priced lawyers to get their stupid butts out of trouble that they shouldn't have been in, in the first place.

I cant believe he isn't in prison for this (or atleast jail). I just know that he is fightning those poor animals. Im glad that they are got of there but we know that he is just going to go get more dogs and comtiune what he was doing. He has had several chances to change and hasn't. So why keep giving him more chances.

I'm as outraged as everyone else, but there is one "good" point in the outcome. Until a so-called 'celebrity' was busted (Vic) it wasn't as well known. Maybe a few got caught but they only made their local news. Now the country is more aware of this horrible cruelty & more people know what to look for, be suspicious of, & more 'unknown' scumbag dog fighting breeders are being caught. As bad as it was, & it was awful, in my opinion what happened in the Vic case & now this one will benefit more dogs in the long run. I hope my point is not misunderstood, he should be severely punished; I'm disappointed there aren't more animal cruelty charges.

I cannot believe that he's so busy that he couldn't drop in to see his dogs once in a while to make sure they are being taken care of. It is so sad to think that these dogs are owned by someone with the financial means to keep them in the lap of luxury, and instead they are being neglected.

Please. Is "caretaker" another word for "dog-fight trainer?" I think every person that was aware of what he was doing she be held liable as well. If people know this sort of thing is going on and don't report it, they are just as guilty, in my opinion.
What I find appalling is that he is getting press, which means his name gets out in the public eye more, which means he sells more records or merchandise.
I sincerely hope his fans are made aware and they make an educated decision to stop supporting him!
