Rapper DMX Pleads Guilty to Animal Abuse

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Rapper DMX pleaded guilty yesterday morning to one count of animal cruelty in the Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix, seven months after authorities raided his home and charged him with neglect of his 12 dogs.

The hip-hop mogul also pleaded guilty to three additional counts of possession of narcotic drugs, theft and possession of marijuana.

DMX, whose legal name is Earl Simmons, chose to follow through on a settlement, which will allow some of the outstanding charges against him to be dropped.

The ruling marks conclusion of a case that has followed the rapper throughout the year, during which he was arrested several times, only to dodge numerous court appearances.

Simmons' animal cruelty charges stemmed from a raid on his home last spring, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

Phoenix authorities seized 12 Pit Bulls and Pit Bull-mixes during the May search of the rapper's Cave Creek, Ariz., house. There, they uncovered the remains of three other dogs partially buried -- and possibly burned.

While authorities did not identify any evidence of dog fighting on the premise, some of the dogs were without water and food.

Simmons claimed that he had entrusted the dogs to a caretaker, whom he thought was providing accordingly for them.

The raid was initially prompted by reports of animal abuse, but it also led to the seizure of marijuana and various weapons from Simmons' home.

Since the May incident, Simmons had several other charges tacked onto his record.

In April, he was charged with identity theft and theft of services after he used the name "Troy Jones" and an incorrect Social Security number to avoid paying a $7,500 medical bill to a health clinic.

Simmons was also arrested in May for driving 114-miles-per-hour on a suspended license.

Simmons' animal abuse and drug possession court hearing was initially slated for August, by when he had already skipped town to Miami, where he was spotted -- and arrested -- several days later.

He was extradited back to an Arizona jail on Aug. 27, but was later freed with a paid $25,000 bond, allowing him to legally travel to Florida, one of Simmons' public defenders reportedly said.

Simmons will next appear in court on Jan. 30, when, according to a plea agreement, the other charges, including identity theft, will be dropped.

I hope he didn't get a lesser sentence because he's "famous."

One count of animal cruelty? That's it for all those charges? I just don't get our legal system.

Am I missing something here? Animal abuse, narcotics possession, identity theft, driving 114 miles an hour on a suspended license, skipping town and he is out on a $25,000 bond. Simply mind boggling!

I'm glad that he was caught - especially if DMX has to serve time in the Maricopa County Jail in Arizona under Sheriff Joe Arpaio! According to an email I got about a year ago, Maricopa County's animal shelters are staffed and operated by prisoners. Prisoners feed, walk and care for strays for 28 cents an hour. That should equalize the playing field, don't you think?

Isn't that the jail where many prisoners have to stay in tents? We can only hope...

I hope the judge bars him from owning any animals in the future as part of any deal.

Why is it that the people with the most money do the worst things to animals. If i had crazy money like that all my animals would be more spolied then they are now.

It's about time! No reason why someone who is famous should be able to get away with such a horrible act.

this is a poor example of the legal system. nail him for the drug charges and throw his heartless butt in jail and throw away the key. DMX is a joke he acts and barks like a dog than we should treat him the way he treated his own dogs!

It remains a miscarraige of justice to allow this person off the hook for so many crimes. Why did they not drop the animal cruelty charge and go after the drugs and put him up for 10-20 years.

It makes me sick to see people like him be heros to our young people. Hope he gets some of the treatment that he inflicted on those poor dog. How can our legal system let someone like that walk free.

Whenever I read an article like this, I fervently wish that the pet owner could be punished by receiving the same treatment as he has inflicted on his pets. Wonder how DMX would like to be starved or burned or neglected. Shame on him. Hope the surviving dogs will be able to be saved and adopted out to homes that deserve them.

Hopefully catching these high-profile incidents of abuse - and serving up high punishments - helps to curb the lesser-known dog fight breeders.

Just goes to show that just because someone is famous & has money, they're not always role models or worthy of our adoration. A sleazebag is a sleazebag no matter how much bling you put on him.

It's a shame that the animals are the ones to suffer. Here is someone who could afford to provide for the dogs but instead bought drugs and then blamed the care taker of the dogs for not taking care of them. If these dogs were his pets he would have noticed that they were not being cared for.

Take him out! I hope our new administration pays more attention to animal cruelty issues. My hope is that they outlaw animal "sales" through pet stores, thus driving adoption through shelters/rescues and non-profits and registered and licensed breeders.

Why is that these high profile people are always doing BAD things like this? Somehow they manage to get away with a slap on the wrist, but the dogs are the ones who pay with a lifetime sentence of cruelty!!!!!!!! They are the ones who SUFFER. These people that commit These HORRIBLE acts should be the ones to SUFFER with PAIN.......................................................

I agree, as long as animals are considered property they will not get the justice they deserve when they are abused, I think the laws are changing but there is so much further to go.

Nothing at all excuses DMX's failings but rather than spin in this in the direction of "wealthy entertainer abuses animals" I really feel like this is another case of someone who can't take care of himself well enough to even think about looking after other creatures.

It is crazy, all of the charges. Identity theft not to pay a bill when he has so much money. Those poor dogs, even if they were in someone's care he should of been more resposible with who he chose and checked on them. Whatever punishment he gets won't be enough.

It blows my mind that with the fame and money these 'star's have they are not capable of providing proper care for their animals. In fact, they have the means to be ridiculous with the care but instead they are neglecting and essentially starving their animals. The dogfighting is another story, seriously....

I feel he should do jail time for this just like Vick. Just because some one has money doesn't mean they should be able to pay their way out of trouble. It really makes me mad that they get to pretty much walk free.

No living creature should be left without food or water. Maybe stick him in a jail cell with no food and water for 24 hours and see how he feels.
