Rapper DMX Pleads Guilty to Animal Abuse

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Rapper DMX pleaded guilty yesterday morning to one count of animal cruelty in the Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix, seven months after authorities raided his home and charged him with neglect of his 12 dogs.

The hip-hop mogul also pleaded guilty to three additional counts of possession of narcotic drugs, theft and possession of marijuana.

DMX, whose legal name is Earl Simmons, chose to follow through on a settlement, which will allow some of the outstanding charges against him to be dropped.

The ruling marks conclusion of a case that has followed the rapper throughout the year, during which he was arrested several times, only to dodge numerous court appearances.

Simmons' animal cruelty charges stemmed from a raid on his home last spring, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

Phoenix authorities seized 12 Pit Bulls and Pit Bull-mixes during the May search of the rapper's Cave Creek, Ariz., house. There, they uncovered the remains of three other dogs partially buried -- and possibly burned.

While authorities did not identify any evidence of dog fighting on the premise, some of the dogs were without water and food.

Simmons claimed that he had entrusted the dogs to a caretaker, whom he thought was providing accordingly for them.

The raid was initially prompted by reports of animal abuse, but it also led to the seizure of marijuana and various weapons from Simmons' home.

Since the May incident, Simmons had several other charges tacked onto his record.

In April, he was charged with identity theft and theft of services after he used the name "Troy Jones" and an incorrect Social Security number to avoid paying a $7,500 medical bill to a health clinic.

Simmons was also arrested in May for driving 114-miles-per-hour on a suspended license.

Simmons' animal abuse and drug possession court hearing was initially slated for August, by when he had already skipped town to Miami, where he was spotted -- and arrested -- several days later.

He was extradited back to an Arizona jail on Aug. 27, but was later freed with a paid $25,000 bond, allowing him to legally travel to Florida, one of Simmons' public defenders reportedly said.

Simmons will next appear in court on Jan. 30, when, according to a plea agreement, the other charges, including identity theft, will be dropped.

Hope as part of the plea he can never own animals again. I'm getting sick and tired of these wanna be gangsters taking advantage of the breeds (pits) willingness to please to heap abuse upon them.

ASPCA's Animal CSI Called Into Action—Rapper DMX Pleads Guilty to Animal Cruelty

GavelOn December 30, rapper DMX—known legally as Earl Simmons—pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty, among other charges for theft and drug possession. The charges stem from a raid in August 2007, when Maricopa County sheriff's deputies descended on Simmons’s Arizona home, finding 12 malnourished pit bulls and the remains of three dogs.

To assist law enforcement officials in their efforts to prosecute Simmons, the ASPCA’s Mobile Animal Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Unit was called into action. Leading the forensic investigation, the ASPCA’s Dr. Melinda Merck examined the remains of the dead dogs recovered from his property."I was very impressed with the level of commitment from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department on this case," says Dr. Merck. "I have worked with many different law enforcement agencies all over the country, and the team working on this investigation was extremely dedicated."

For the record, Simmons is a repeat offender—in 2002, the rapper pleaded guilty to 13 counts of animal cruelty, charges resulting from the neglect of 13 pit bulls. As a result of this most recent prosecution, the rapper faces at least 90 days in jail, can never again own any animals and must attend an animal offender treatment program. A parole violation would send him to jail for more than 10 years. A sentence hearing has been scheduled for January 30.

"The ASPCA is proud to have had its expert staff be a part of this important case," says ASPCA President and CEO Ed Sayres. "Dr. Merck's knowledge and practice of veterinary forensics is truly at the forefront of animal cruelty investigations. With stronger evidence collected by Dr. Merck, law enforcement officials and prosecutors are able to get stronger convictions against those who commit these terrible acts."
this is what i meant to post-duh

Hit-and-Run Driver Arrested After Striking Puppy

HLE BadgeEarly last month, five-month-old pit bull Gigi and her owner were crossing the street near their Staten Island home when suddenly a car struck the puppy. According to Gigi’s owner, the car was on the wrong side of the street. The driver left the scene of the accident without providing any information to the puppy’s devastated owner. Sadly, Gigi succumbed to her injuries and died at a nearby animal hospital. The ASPCA was notified of the incident two days later and promptly began an investigation.

On December 27, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agents arrested the alleged hit-and-run driver, Rafael Lauda, on multiple charges stemming from the accident. Lauda, 22, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury to an animal and driving with a suspended license. If convicted of all charges, he faces more than a year in jail.

What should you do if you see an animal being hit by a car? “Regardless of how serious the injuries appear, any animal hit by a car needs immediate medical attention,” says Dr. Robert Reisman, ASPCA Medical Coordinator of Animal Cruelty Cases. “Internal injuries may not be visible, but in all instances may be life-threatening.”

More tips from Dr. Reisman:

* “If there is external bleeding, apply pressure to the wound to limit loss of blood.”

* “Because you may further aggravate a serious injury while moving an injured animal, he or she should be carefully placed on a board—or at the very least, a blanket—and carefully, but quickly, transported to the closest animal hospital.”

Additionally, the ASPCA reminds you to be extra alert when crossing the street with your dogs—keep them close, and never use extension leashes near high-traffic areas. If you have witnessed animal cruelty, please report it. In New York City, call (877) THE-ASPCA. To learn how to report cruelty elsewhere, visit our Report Cruelty FAQ.

How is it that when a celebrity gets busted for animal abuse, and such, it is made out to be less of an issue than a regular citizen? Anyone, who abuses or neglects an animal should receive punishment, and harsh punishment at that.

This is disgusting. He is a celebrity and they are willing to let him get off relatively easy. It's similar to the Michael Vick story but this guy had weapons and Marajuana. The sad thing is he probably thinks its ok to do what he does. He skips court cases and commits crimes but hey "he's a famous singer, its the life style".

While I am happy he pleaded guilty I am not pleased they let him off on some of the other charges, why do we have make arrangements to do anything for these people, he should serve the time for the drug offense as well as all of the counts for animal abuse. I do believe he was involved in dog fighting, and if sickens me to see him get a slap on the wrist but at least the story got attentions from the media and everyone knows what he did.

Sometimes I think we should go back to the theory of punishing the offender with the same cruelty as they used on others - whether human or animal - it shouldn't matter.

Another person with a name who thinks he is above the law! Perhaps no one found any evidence of dog fighting, but I would say with the number of pit bulls- add onto the fact of buried / burned dogs! Everyone knows what he is up to! Hopefully, he will end up with what he deserves....some jail time and no one to care!

I don't understand this at all. Someone like DMX has way more means than the average person to make sure that his animals are taken care of. Why have animals if you're not gonna take care of them. I tell people who want to adopt animals from my shelter that this is just like having a child. They totally depend on their owners to take care of them. I don't think that he should be put with micheal vick in a pen to fight-they need to stick both of them in seperate cages with lions who haven't eaten in several days. Let them know what it feels like to truly suffer! Pits are amazing dogs and hate to hear of any of them being mistreated. And then to solve the problem, everyone wants to do away with the breed and not the idiots who mistreat them! It's not the dogs fault it's human fault so they're the ones who should be punished and not the dog!

Wow...What a WONDERFUL example of our legal system here in the USA. Only America will let someone charged with so many crimes, get away with a slap on the wrist! Was he not charged with drug possession, driving with a suspended license, jumping bail, let me see did I miss anything....Oh yeah, 12 COUNTS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY!!!! Gee, he should have just whacked off someone he didn't like, to add murder to the PLEA DEAL!!!! Only in America....I am so sure that the wonderful men & women who have died defending our freedoms, are turning in their graves!
What a horrible role model...And I am not just talking about DMX, I'm complaining about the travesty of justice here in America!

TRAVESTY - (noun)
a travesty of justice perversion of, distortion of, corruption of, misrepresentation of, poor imitation of, poor substitute for, mockery of, parody of, caricature of; farce of, charade of, pantomime of, sham of, spoof of; informal apology for, (poor) excuse for.
