Rapper DMX Pleads Guilty to Animal Abuse

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Rapper DMX pleaded guilty yesterday morning to one count of animal cruelty in the Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix, seven months after authorities raided his home and charged him with neglect of his 12 dogs.

The hip-hop mogul also pleaded guilty to three additional counts of possession of narcotic drugs, theft and possession of marijuana.

DMX, whose legal name is Earl Simmons, chose to follow through on a settlement, which will allow some of the outstanding charges against him to be dropped.

The ruling marks conclusion of a case that has followed the rapper throughout the year, during which he was arrested several times, only to dodge numerous court appearances.

Simmons' animal cruelty charges stemmed from a raid on his home last spring, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

Phoenix authorities seized 12 Pit Bulls and Pit Bull-mixes during the May search of the rapper's Cave Creek, Ariz., house. There, they uncovered the remains of three other dogs partially buried -- and possibly burned.

While authorities did not identify any evidence of dog fighting on the premise, some of the dogs were without water and food.

Simmons claimed that he had entrusted the dogs to a caretaker, whom he thought was providing accordingly for them.

The raid was initially prompted by reports of animal abuse, but it also led to the seizure of marijuana and various weapons from Simmons' home.

Since the May incident, Simmons had several other charges tacked onto his record.

In April, he was charged with identity theft and theft of services after he used the name "Troy Jones" and an incorrect Social Security number to avoid paying a $7,500 medical bill to a health clinic.

Simmons was also arrested in May for driving 114-miles-per-hour on a suspended license.

Simmons' animal abuse and drug possession court hearing was initially slated for August, by when he had already skipped town to Miami, where he was spotted -- and arrested -- several days later.

He was extradited back to an Arizona jail on Aug. 27, but was later freed with a paid $25,000 bond, allowing him to legally travel to Florida, one of Simmons' public defenders reportedly said.

Simmons will next appear in court on Jan. 30, when, according to a plea agreement, the other charges, including identity theft, will be dropped.

he shouldn't get away with it, he shouldn't be able to have animals anymore. He needs to take responsibility and get what he deserves

I give him a little credit for pleading guilty and taking resposnsibilty. He should however be prosecuted and judged just like any of us would. No excuses for not caring properly for your pets.

It's just awfull when a man who makes millions of dollars a year can't even take care of his animal. I hope he gets the same punishment that one of us would,if were facing the same charges.

This story is ridiculous. Hopefully, he will get the same sentence that any other person would get instead of being easy on him because he is famous.

What a loser....it shouldn't matter the dollar amount of the fine or how much money the man has. These were living things he took on as his responsiblity he should be help accountable.

People admire these singers and celebrities, and then get dissapointed when they find out that these people are just like them, human. We make mistakes, even our entertainers. Not to excuse what he did.

Even if he did entrust his dogs to a caretaker, and the caretaker was the one responsible, why didn't he notice this and report it or take steps to prevent it?

Ounds like this has something to do with dog fightine even if it's not at his home. Protest his cruelty to animals and don't buy his music. When it hits his pocketbook, he MAY see the errors of his ways. This should be on all of the news stations and parers so people know who is the person behind the music. Hit him where it hurts, just like he hurt his dogs.

I enjoy hip-hop culture in all its permutations, but it has not contributed to the general loving upkeep of animals. I will throw a party when "pit bull chic" dies its inevitable death. Not that pits can't be cool; it's just herd mentality laced with soulnessness and idiocy.

What a thug. You know its really disgusting to know that these celebrities receieve so much fame and money, and then they mistreat animals, caught with drugs, and everything of that sort, its really depressing that young kids could be looking up to these people, and thats giving the wrong idea on how to act. People like him make me sick.

I don't think if you mistreat your animal you should ever be able to get another one! Animals need use to love and care for them they are like our kids in a way and celebrities should take good care of their animals and not abuse them in any way or else go to jail for animal cruelty

I am SO tired of these "celebrities" mistreating their animals. Why do they have to have animals - is there some sort of status symbol associated with it? I'm tired, too, of the "it's just an animal" mentality. They have the money to buy the animals - they should have the money to provide food and water. Or hire someone else to do it for them if it's beneath their celebrity status.

I was thinking the same thing. Just because you have money does not mean that you should own or are an animal lover. These types of celebrities are not hoe a lot anyway, so how can they enjoy their babies?

Without trying to sound TOO extreme, is there a punishment harsh enough for people like this? Animals can be vicious, but you rarely find any that are cruel!

What a loser!!! I used to listen to this guys music, but no more!! And being charged with only one count of animal abuse, that is getting off easy. He should be charged for each abuse and fined for each abuse. I agree with a previous comment, he should pay for each animals caretaking and rehabilitation for at least the next year....he has enough money, why are we not demanding he take responsibility!!!!

I personally think that people who do this to dogs should have to pay for the dogs to recieve care from the shelters as part of their punishment. It's not fair to the animals or the shelters to pay for these stupid mistakes. The fines should go to the dogs care!
