Puppy Auctions: An Inhumane New Trend

Browse News

JACKSONVILLE – According to the Kansas City Star, nearly 300 dogs were sold to breeders in a recent auction in Jacksonville, Missouri.

The American Pet Products Manufacturer’s Association, Inc. says that 44.8 million households in the U.S. are home to dogs, which is exactly why the sellers want to auction them off. Dogs go for anywhere from $13 to hundreds of dollars. It’s a trend that, in Missouri, is growing fast.

About one dog was sold per minute at the average price of $155. After each sale, a new dog was removed from a wall of cages stacked two or three high, where buyers then placed their bid.

Sellers are aiming at buyers with one thing in mind, producing puppies.

While auctions are legal, there are some concerns that these auctions serve puppy mills, where the conditions are often believed to be unsanitary.

Experts warn that dogs bred from puppy mills often suffer from disease and lack of social skills, making them unfit to be a good pet.

Supporters argue that these auctions are not abusive because they are regulated by state and federal inspectors and claim to sell to reputable breeders.

There is no word yet on whether the intruder's motive was to free the dog.

This is terrible. Really horrible that the animals are treating in this way and are just used as a way for lazy, disgusting humans to profit. These individuals should be ashamed of themselves.

I was always under the impression that Amish people were somewhat better than this. Boy was I wrong. I have now added Amish made products to what I no longer buy.

It is sad that this is going on in our country. God fearing Amish people were the ones promoting the animals during this auction.

I wonder if the dogs were stolen too? What was the intruder part? I think I missed something.

Dogs are not cattle, they should not go through an auction. It makes me think that whoever buys them will treat them much like cattle.

I was told once that the cargo shipping office at the Kansas City Airport is the largest trafficer for dogs (assumed from puppy mills) so I guess I am not surprised by their auctioning. They treat them as property, nothing else.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE WOULD SELL DOGS THIS WAY. BUT WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO BUY A DOG FROM PEOPLE LIKE THIS TOO? NOT PEOPLE THAT REALLY CARE ABOUT THEM THAT'S FOR SURE.

How is this even legal? I just do not understand how a country or world can function in reality when they do things like this.

Completely uncalled for, and only leads to more gross negligence of breed for money, regardless of the animals' welfare.

This should be stopped and the breeders should be stopped. There are so many dogs being euthanized every day. People should be going to animal shelters, not auctions, for puppies.

I second everything Mary P. said. Adopt, spay and neuter, DO NOT bring thousands more into the world when there are so many unwanted ones suffering and dying!!

It is wrong to be selling an animal to begin with much less than one that is NOT spayed or neutered. Here's another example of WHY dogs and cats primarily are being euthanized daily all over the world. We DON'T NEED any more pregnancies. We don't have homes for the ones that happen that we don't hear about. This is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

I didnt know they had these kind of auctions, they just sound awful.

over here in england, they have puppy farms, where, as you can guess, some are absolutely appaling.

we also have pony auctions, where wild ponies are auctioned off, many older mares go to the meat man - over to france for human consumption!

:(

People just have to stop buying from puppy mills, on line, and at auctions. Hit 'em where it really hurts - in the wallet

A reputable breeder would not purchase puppies at an auction because the lineage would not be clear. Puppy mills and auctions feed each other. Auctions should be legally stopped.
