Puppies Behind Bars: Serving Time, Public

Browse News

CLINTON, N.J. - Since Sept. 11, the need for explosive detection canines, or “E-D-T’s,” has grown. And training these specialized dogs is a group not likely expected to be aiding law enforcement – prisoners.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Be sure to see our video on this story.)

“This program is definitely changing my life,” said inmate Ivelesa Figueroa.

And it’s changing dogs’ lives too. At the Edna Mahan women’s prison in Clinton, New Jersey, a program called Puppies Behind Bars teaches inmates to train Labradors to become bomb sniffing dogs.

“I love this program because it gives us all different opportunities to show people that some of us do regret the things that we did and that we are trying to start giving something back to society, that, you know, we are willing to change,” said inmate Erika Riggins.

“It’s been a hard journey, but having him, having the program has helped me cope with it, has made me a more responsible person,” said Figueroa. “It definitely gives me something to do every day.”

“It’s a good feeling to know that she depends on me and that she needs me and she's there to give me love,” said inmate Kathryn Noll. “Some days are a little rough, but, for the most part, it's rewarding.

The dogs are with the women 24-7. Program Instructor Jan Brady said that the dogs learn the basics of their future jobs by working with inmates.

Tires, doors, seats and trunks all become work zones for both the canines and their temporary trainers.

Speaking to the success of the program, Dr. Gennifer Furst, a professor at William Paterson University, said that there's a dog that was trained by Puppies Behind Bars in every state.

“These programs are in over half of all states,” she said. “and the vast majority have been established since 2000, so it's a recent but growing trend.

According to Dr. Durst, programs like PBB exist in every state across the country, providing prisoners the opportunity to turn their time into positivity for themselves, the dogs and the people who benefit from the canines' training.

But for the women, the dogs are a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

“No matter what you do, no matter what you don't do, (the dogs) are always waiting for you,” said Figueroa. “They don't judge you and they're your best friend.”

Erika Riggins said she takes pride in knowing that she can turn his misdeeds into something that can help save lives – a fact that makes PBB worth the efforts of everyone involved. As another inmate put it, “ ... your life is no longer yours, it belongs to (the dogs).”

“It's always a great sense of accomplishment, I think, that we all feel,” said Brady.

“I can't see my life in here, without (the dogs), without this program,” said Figueroa.

Puppies Behind Bars also provides guide dogs for the blind and service dogs. For more information about the program, log onto PuppiesBehindBars.org.

This program is definitely a win-win situation. These women are learning a useful skill, are contributing to society in a positive way, and the dogs are getting much needed training. Kudos to those who developed this program. I say, let's see more of this!!!

My Luke (Cool Hand Luke) was in a prison program. It serves both needs for the inmates and the community. It helps the shelters have room for one more too. Great program all the way around.

I think this might be a good program, but I also think that people are in prison to be punished and I do not think this is a good form of punishment for most.

I have been a volunteer puppy socializer for 2 years, with Puppies Behind Bars in Clinton, NJ. This program is awesome, and if the clip/article has intrigued you, please request more information. Puppy socializers take the puppies on outings into the "outside world" to expose them to sights and sounds that they might not experience in a prison. You can take a puppy for whatever length of time suits your schedule.

These puppies wear special identifying jackets, and are welcome everywhere service dogs are welcome. I have never been refused entry with a puppy. I've taken puppies places such as the mall, library, stores, restaurants, nursing homes, the beach, the airport, even onto a jet waiting at the gate.

Every outing with a puppy is an adventure. It's very rewarding, lots of fun, and enables you to meet so many people that you would otherwise have never known. Give it a try...you won't be sorry.

My dog Bailey was born in a prison- his mom was being taken care of as part of a prisoner/dog care program in the state of Ohio. After he was born, he was transferred to a rescue for puppy care. I totally think this type of reform program pairing dogs for future use/training is a positive experience for both the human and dog.

I really like this program. It give the inmates something more and incentive to do well so they can stay in the program and it give some dogs second chances. This is actually an uplifting story about prison. Nice to read.

LoL, I thought this article was about putting puppies in cages and put on display. Anyway, I do think the prison/shelter program is a good idea for some inmates. I still believe people are in prison for a reason and shouldn't get to enjoy some things that they would normally experience freely in the outside world.

some of the inmates i have encountered( in a variety of jobs) have never had an opportunity to be personally responsible for anything; let alone an animal. if they can learn through caring for and training these pups, they have a better chance outside of having the kind of responsible life most of us take for granted. (where they can have their own pet, a home and a job). it is a "win-win".

This is a great program for both the inmate and puppy training. I think it builds confidence and self esteem for the prisoner and a lot of individual attention is given to training.

That is a truly great idea.

It gives people in prison a connection with the outside world. To see and work with animals would be very rewarding and it shows people that they are still humans and shouldn't be completely isolated! Even though some may have been the perpetrators of bad crimes they do have some good in them!
