Puppies Behind Bars: Serving Time, Public

Browse News

CLINTON, N.J. - Since Sept. 11, the need for explosive detection canines, or “E-D-T’s,” has grown. And training these specialized dogs is a group not likely expected to be aiding law enforcement – prisoners.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Be sure to see our video on this story.)

“This program is definitely changing my life,” said inmate Ivelesa Figueroa.

And it’s changing dogs’ lives too. At the Edna Mahan women’s prison in Clinton, New Jersey, a program called Puppies Behind Bars teaches inmates to train Labradors to become bomb sniffing dogs.

“I love this program because it gives us all different opportunities to show people that some of us do regret the things that we did and that we are trying to start giving something back to society, that, you know, we are willing to change,” said inmate Erika Riggins.

“It’s been a hard journey, but having him, having the program has helped me cope with it, has made me a more responsible person,” said Figueroa. “It definitely gives me something to do every day.”

“It’s a good feeling to know that she depends on me and that she needs me and she's there to give me love,” said inmate Kathryn Noll. “Some days are a little rough, but, for the most part, it's rewarding.

The dogs are with the women 24-7. Program Instructor Jan Brady said that the dogs learn the basics of their future jobs by working with inmates.

Tires, doors, seats and trunks all become work zones for both the canines and their temporary trainers.

Speaking to the success of the program, Dr. Gennifer Furst, a professor at William Paterson University, said that there's a dog that was trained by Puppies Behind Bars in every state.

“These programs are in over half of all states,” she said. “and the vast majority have been established since 2000, so it's a recent but growing trend.

According to Dr. Durst, programs like PBB exist in every state across the country, providing prisoners the opportunity to turn their time into positivity for themselves, the dogs and the people who benefit from the canines' training.

But for the women, the dogs are a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

“No matter what you do, no matter what you don't do, (the dogs) are always waiting for you,” said Figueroa. “They don't judge you and they're your best friend.”

Erika Riggins said she takes pride in knowing that she can turn his misdeeds into something that can help save lives – a fact that makes PBB worth the efforts of everyone involved. As another inmate put it, “ ... your life is no longer yours, it belongs to (the dogs).”

“It's always a great sense of accomplishment, I think, that we all feel,” said Brady.

“I can't see my life in here, without (the dogs), without this program,” said Figueroa.

Puppies Behind Bars also provides guide dogs for the blind and service dogs. For more information about the program, log onto PuppiesBehindBars.org.

I think this is a great idea. It gives the prisoners something constructive to do, and it's easier to keep an eye on the dogs' progress if they are in one program, instead of if they were all in training with individual foster homes.

I have seen similar stories on television. The dogs definitely bring out a better side than the inmate always publically showed.

Great program for all involved. This is the sort of program that needs to be implemented in more prisons so that the inmates contribute more to society while serving their time.

This is a good program those behind bars may reevaluate themselves and become better citizens and the dogs are being trained to be useful, no matter how you look at it everyone wins

On the whole, these programs are a good idea. I think they pay dividends besides the obvious ones of trained dogs and productive prison populations -- greater self-esteem in the long run, leading to less recidivism.

I've seen a couple documentaries on this on animal planet. It is a win-win situation for the prisoner, the dog and in the shows that I watched the people who eventually adopted the dog. the dogs they trained were from shelters so look how big the circle was! Dogs are so smart and really want to please us. i think they all need a job!

I think this is a wonderful program. It helps all parties involved. It gives the dog love and a job, teaches the prisoners respect and responsibility. I think that the prisons have a long way to go in retraining inmates and this is a start.

I love this story. I live very close to this facility. I've read about the progress and it is a win/win situation for all - - us, the dogs and the inmates. I would love to see more programs such as these. Just like we work with shelter dogs and give them something to do, we need to do the same for inmates or they will never become rehabilitated, especially those with minor criminal charges. They aren't all murders, as we know.

I hope by working with these dogs, the inmates will reevaluate their lives, and not make the bad choices that got them there in the first place.Dogs are a great learning experience for people of any age.

This is a great program. Not only do the dogs get a loving friend to care for them while learning, the inmate is also learning a marketable skill that they could use once released.

Our shelter recently started a prison program and I am thrilled. I believe that it is a great tool to use for rehabilitation for prisoners--they have to earn the right to train a dog. The dog has the luxury of living with the trainer 24/7. I am passionate about this program and the positive impact it has on the community.

What a wonderful program! It's nice to hear that these prisoners are excited to be contributing something so worthwhile to society. Sounds like a very special bond is formed with these dogs, and that has to be some powerful healing for the prisoners.

We adopted a dog from our local shelters prison program. He is the best dog ever, he is so lovable and was trained very well. The prison keeps a log of what they do with the dog each day. It is a wonderful program and gives the inmates something positive to focus on as well as gives the dogs a better chance for adoption.

This is a good program, it teaches responsibility which the inmates will need when they are released. It also teaches them what it means to have someone depend on them everyday so they do have to be reliable. It also gives the inmates a sense that it is ok to have feelings and to care about something and have the animals care about them.

While I feel this is a good use of the prisoners time and greats a good outcome of having trained dogs, I feel it is almost rewarding to the prisoners. I truly hope they only give dogs to the best prisoners who have proven themselves to be reliable and remorseful.

I heard of the puppies behind bars program some time ago and am all for it. It is a chance for these prisoners to give back to the communites in a constructive way. Obviously, working/living with the pups adds to the life of the person training it. So, it is a win-win situation. Shows, once again, the theraputic affects that animals have on the human race.

What a wonderful opportunity for human and canine! Both are helped by this relationship and the general public wins by benefiting from these trained dogs. The inmate has a job, the canine learns a job, hopefully the inmate changes their outlook towards life.
