Prince Edward Investigated for Beating Dog

Browse News

LONDON -- Prince Edward has been placed under fire by various British animal welfare organizations, after he was photographed raising a stick at two dogs on a recent hunting excavation.

Prince Edward, the fourth child and third son of Queen Elizabeth II, was hunting for pheasant on Queen Elizabeth's private Sandringham estate in Norfolk on Saturday, alongside Prince William, the queen's husband Prince Phillip, and the royal family's second son, Prince Andrew.

The two black Labrador Retrievers accompanying the family on the outing engaged in a squabble over a pheasant that had been shot down.

Prince Edward, also known as the Earl of Essex, was photographed approaching the dogs with his 4-foot-long walking stick in a threatening manner. In the photographic sequence, he is then seen wielding the stick down onto one dog several times.

The photographs do not reveal any actual contact with the dog and the stick, but they do show the Prince chasing after one of the dogs, who appears to be cowering, after the two animals were separated.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is now investigating the incident, after it received several complaints from UK residents who saw the images.

"We'll treat it like any other allegation of cruelty," an unnamed spokeswoman told The Daily Express. "We will take a look and see whether there is anything in it."

A Buckingham Palace spokesman denied Prince Edward actually inflicted any harm on the dogs.

"I can confirm there were two dogs fighting over a pheasant. Prince Edward did separate them but no harm was done to either dog," the spokesman said.

"He broke up the fight with the dogs and pictures show him waving his stick around. We cannot confirm, however, whether he struck the dog."

An unnamed onlooker quoted by the UK Times Online said it "looked to me as if he hit the dog at least three times."

The spectator expressed uncertainty over the cited contact, however.

"But because it was such a long way away I cannot say that he definitely did [hit the dog]. He swung at the dog, then swung at it again, chasing it around the field. He was really angry."

According to The Telegraph, Prince Edward could be prosecuted if it is proven that he beat the dogs unnecessarily. Extreme cases of animal cruelty could result in fines up to 20,000 pounds, or nearly $30,000 U.S. dollars.

Though it is unclear how the case will play out -- let alone whether Prince Edward actually did beat the dogs -- animal welfare organizations across the nation have spoken out strongly against the act.

"People in blood sports tend to show a complete disregard for the welfare of animals," said Barry Hugillm, spokesman of the League Against Cruel Sports. "He has set a truly sickening example."

"It is an offense to cause an animal unnecessary suffering," said Andrew Tyler, director of Animal Aid. "Hitting a dog is a pathetic, cowardly and vicious act. It appear he had a royal tantrum."

Yet the Buckingham Palace spokeswoman maintained that no member of the royal family would knowingly injure an animal.

"They are a dog-loving family," the spokeswoman told The Daily Express. "The Queen, as everyone knows, has several dogs and so do many other members of the family."

This isn't the first time the royal family has fallen into some heat with animal welfare organizations.

In December 2005, Prince Edward was criticized after he battered an injured pigeon to death on a pheasant hunting excursion.

And in 2006, his father, Prince Phillip, drew ire from animal welfare organizations and activists when he clubbed a fox to death with a flagpole during another hunting trip at the Sandringham estate.

My verdict is still out on this one. Did not show him actually hitting the dogs. He might have been trying to stop a dog fight before it got nasty. If there is evidence that he did strike one, I certainly agree, he should be reprimanded the full extent of the laws in Britain, and I think they are pretty strict!

agree, the press can make the most of any situation and we were not there so assumption should not be assumed. I would like to they do everything for animal welfare and this is a media glitz.

I thought the "royals" were supposed to be great animal lovers--what with the Queen's corgis and Princess Anne's horses, etc. It does seem that the video and eyewitness evidence is ambiguous so perhaps we should remember "innocent until proven guilty."

As in most "stars" even if he did do this, I bet he won't be charged with anything.

Prince Edward even looks mean. So much for the Royal dogs. I know that the Queen takes exceptional care of her dogs, just not sure that compassion has been passed on to the relatives. I'm glad to hear this is being pursued, but I highly doubt that anything will come of it, whether there was abuse or not. Different laws for the powerful of the world, I'm afraid

I like to see how seriously they are taking this incident. I wish it would happen like this over here more - people abuse animals all the time and nothing happens. We need to be tougher on people like this.

I guess the royal family just can't stay out of trouble, can they? Hopefully, he was just ticked off and took it out on something else. I have a good training school for you to go to "sir."

If he weren't part of the royal family, this wouldn't even make major news. It's awful if he really did beat the dogs for fighting over the bird, but it's hardly front page news except for his family.

Here's an idea. If you're famous and people photograph you all the time, try not to act like a moron in front of cameras. Even if he didn't beat the dogs, people will believe that he did. Try a little common sense and some better training.

I suppose it takes force to break up two dogs who are fighting, to keep them from injuring themselves. Just sounds like it was taken too far. Altho the evidence is a bit skimpy

Last I knew, someone is innocent until proven guilty. I hope he did not hit the dogs....hopefully it was just anger and he took it out on the ground. At a minimum , it sounds like the dogs need a little more training on a "soft mouth" as they are not getting the bird hunting thing.

BINGO! I concur on all ends. We see frustration a lot in the obedience ring. I was at a trial and the dog broke an out-of-sight stay to find its owner. When the dog showed up, wagging its tail, the owner sprayed it in the mouth with bitter apple. Needless to say, I am not violent in the least but thought about grabbing the bitter apple and spraying it in her mouth in defense of the dog. Fortunately, she was thrown off the grounds and not permitted to compete again. So, as Meg says, train the dog right so you don't get frustrated. And, we all make mistakes!

Has been raised as a highly-priveleged member of society, so is probably used to acting as he wishes. And I believe the family supported fox hunting, a rather brutal 'sport', so they probably don't exactly understand what is cruel to animals.

The royal family is definitely of the "old school" in that they believe that dogs are kept for a reason and have to earn their keep. Sounds like they could use some anger management classes??

Although the Royal Family may own many animals,I've never thought of them as animal loving people.I think that their animals are there for a purpose and a reason, whether that be for riding, hunting, whatever.I have a feeling that they still are considered more "Property" than family.

"They are a dog-loving family" when having staged photo sessions for the press. Just the fact that they were hunting shows they do injure and murder animals. Since he is a rich and spoiled member of the royal family, I doubt that we will see any feedback from the investigation.

If he did hit this poor dog than shame on him and I hope he pays the price. As part of the English royalty he should think twice before he does some thing like this and sets a bad example to the rest of the country, as people look up to him.

Hmmm...no member of the royal family would knowingly injure an animal, huh? What do you call beating a fox to death with a flagpole & battering an injured pigeon? Sounds like they enjoy inflicting pain & suffering on innocent animals. And as for being dog lovers & having dogs, just because a family has dogs, doesn't mean they wouldn't harm them. I've seen some pretty harsh treatment of "beloved pets".

Whether the dogs fought over a bird or not doesn't matter. If someone repeatedly hits a dog with a stick,he needs to be arrested and punished as much as the law allows.
