Prince Edward Investigated for Beating Dog

Browse News

LONDON -- Prince Edward has been placed under fire by various British animal welfare organizations, after he was photographed raising a stick at two dogs on a recent hunting excavation.

Prince Edward, the fourth child and third son of Queen Elizabeth II, was hunting for pheasant on Queen Elizabeth's private Sandringham estate in Norfolk on Saturday, alongside Prince William, the queen's husband Prince Phillip, and the royal family's second son, Prince Andrew.

The two black Labrador Retrievers accompanying the family on the outing engaged in a squabble over a pheasant that had been shot down.

Prince Edward, also known as the Earl of Essex, was photographed approaching the dogs with his 4-foot-long walking stick in a threatening manner. In the photographic sequence, he is then seen wielding the stick down onto one dog several times.

The photographs do not reveal any actual contact with the dog and the stick, but they do show the Prince chasing after one of the dogs, who appears to be cowering, after the two animals were separated.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is now investigating the incident, after it received several complaints from UK residents who saw the images.

"We'll treat it like any other allegation of cruelty," an unnamed spokeswoman told The Daily Express. "We will take a look and see whether there is anything in it."

A Buckingham Palace spokesman denied Prince Edward actually inflicted any harm on the dogs.

"I can confirm there were two dogs fighting over a pheasant. Prince Edward did separate them but no harm was done to either dog," the spokesman said.

"He broke up the fight with the dogs and pictures show him waving his stick around. We cannot confirm, however, whether he struck the dog."

An unnamed onlooker quoted by the UK Times Online said it "looked to me as if he hit the dog at least three times."

The spectator expressed uncertainty over the cited contact, however.

"But because it was such a long way away I cannot say that he definitely did [hit the dog]. He swung at the dog, then swung at it again, chasing it around the field. He was really angry."

According to The Telegraph, Prince Edward could be prosecuted if it is proven that he beat the dogs unnecessarily. Extreme cases of animal cruelty could result in fines up to 20,000 pounds, or nearly $30,000 U.S. dollars.

Though it is unclear how the case will play out -- let alone whether Prince Edward actually did beat the dogs -- animal welfare organizations across the nation have spoken out strongly against the act.

"People in blood sports tend to show a complete disregard for the welfare of animals," said Barry Hugillm, spokesman of the League Against Cruel Sports. "He has set a truly sickening example."

"It is an offense to cause an animal unnecessary suffering," said Andrew Tyler, director of Animal Aid. "Hitting a dog is a pathetic, cowardly and vicious act. It appear he had a royal tantrum."

Yet the Buckingham Palace spokeswoman maintained that no member of the royal family would knowingly injure an animal.

"They are a dog-loving family," the spokeswoman told The Daily Express. "The Queen, as everyone knows, has several dogs and so do many other members of the family."

This isn't the first time the royal family has fallen into some heat with animal welfare organizations.

In December 2005, Prince Edward was criticized after he battered an injured pigeon to death on a pheasant hunting excursion.

And in 2006, his father, Prince Phillip, drew ire from animal welfare organizations and activists when he clubbed a fox to death with a flagpole during another hunting trip at the Sandringham estate.

Sounds like both he & his father need therapy to deal with their disregard for the feelings of animals, and maybe anger-management too. I'm pleased this hasn't been swept under the rug due to their royal status. The public shame, as much or more than punishment, may have some affect.

I think the royal family sucks, and I would never defend them. However, two dogs fighting over a dead animal is very dangerous, and if you've never had to deal with it, you can't judge. If you have to use a stick and you're able to break them up with no harm done, that's probably the best possible outcome.

My two dogs go at it now and again, it starts as play-fighting, then it gets worse and worse and loud. Sometimes, it is hard to know who "crossed the line" first. Also, sometimes if you break them apart, they are still have too much energy about it. I usually try to take them for a walk afterwards they usually just have too much enevery!!!

Maybe, but when it comes to the "Royal Family: the truth might not come out. They have lots of people to protect them and slide this under the rug, so to speak.

I would not try to physically separate two fighting dogs. So what would one use? What ever is handy? Perhaps a stick?

It would be nice to get all the facts in first... he may have been trying to help break these two apart before any real damage was done.

So...we're condeming someone when we don't even know if he hit the dog? How do we know he didn't prevent an injury to the dogs by stopping the fight.

I've got better things to do then speculate over something that doesn't even interest the tabloids.

"They are a dog loving family," until the dogs fight over the bird!!! Prince Edward is a cad. Raising a stick THREE times would indicate he hit A dog AT LEAST once, wouldn't you think? Throw the book at him. Do not allow him hunting dogs. Ha; he'll beat the rap. Royals.

It would be nice if the truth came out, but we all know the palace will cover it up. I do take offence to a comment that was made by a spokesman for by animal rights group. To quote him "People in blood sports tend to show a complete disregard for the welfare of animals," said Barry Hugillm. I believe that this groups alot of people together that shouldn't be, alot of hunters and hunting groups are known for their gentleman like conduct. Some poor examples are scum, I agree, but not all are.

If it were based on separating them from fighting, that is one thing, but it sounds like with the other incidents of beating a pigeon to death, etc. he might be due some consequences. Who can imagine what he has done that noone has seen!

I must say that at the dog park there have been a few instances in which I would have whacked a dog with a stick myself when they have attacked one of my dogs. Once some dogs get fighting, it takes a lot to get them apart.

In your situation, you were justified. But with this, these were dogs that co-existed together already. This was most probably no different than a brother and sister going at it only to be each other's protector in the end.

Just because dogs live together does not mean they always get along....especially when there is food or something involved. I used to dog sit for someone who had 2 dogs that were raised from pups together. The one dog put the other in the hospital with multiple stitches.....you never know. Pheasant is pretty tasty! :)

I think these problems with the royals have an obvious cause - years of inbreeding. We lucked out with the Romanovs; even if they would have survived Lenin and his lot, the hemophilia would have hopefully caused that line to peter out.

If I raised a stick to my dog, she would probably cower. If she had just been in a fight, and knew she was in trouble, she would definitely cower. It's a natural reaction.

Hey, when two dogs are fighting, you use whatever is at hand to get the g.d. things to stop. Dogs are dogs, and they aren't always cuddly and playful with each other. A whole lot something over nothing.
