Prince Edward Investigated for Beating Dog

Browse News

LONDON -- Prince Edward has been placed under fire by various British animal welfare organizations, after he was photographed raising a stick at two dogs on a recent hunting excavation.

Prince Edward, the fourth child and third son of Queen Elizabeth II, was hunting for pheasant on Queen Elizabeth's private Sandringham estate in Norfolk on Saturday, alongside Prince William, the queen's husband Prince Phillip, and the royal family's second son, Prince Andrew.

The two black Labrador Retrievers accompanying the family on the outing engaged in a squabble over a pheasant that had been shot down.

Prince Edward, also known as the Earl of Essex, was photographed approaching the dogs with his 4-foot-long walking stick in a threatening manner. In the photographic sequence, he is then seen wielding the stick down onto one dog several times.

The photographs do not reveal any actual contact with the dog and the stick, but they do show the Prince chasing after one of the dogs, who appears to be cowering, after the two animals were separated.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is now investigating the incident, after it received several complaints from UK residents who saw the images.

"We'll treat it like any other allegation of cruelty," an unnamed spokeswoman told The Daily Express. "We will take a look and see whether there is anything in it."

A Buckingham Palace spokesman denied Prince Edward actually inflicted any harm on the dogs.

"I can confirm there were two dogs fighting over a pheasant. Prince Edward did separate them but no harm was done to either dog," the spokesman said.

"He broke up the fight with the dogs and pictures show him waving his stick around. We cannot confirm, however, whether he struck the dog."

An unnamed onlooker quoted by the UK Times Online said it "looked to me as if he hit the dog at least three times."

The spectator expressed uncertainty over the cited contact, however.

"But because it was such a long way away I cannot say that he definitely did [hit the dog]. He swung at the dog, then swung at it again, chasing it around the field. He was really angry."

According to The Telegraph, Prince Edward could be prosecuted if it is proven that he beat the dogs unnecessarily. Extreme cases of animal cruelty could result in fines up to 20,000 pounds, or nearly $30,000 U.S. dollars.

Though it is unclear how the case will play out -- let alone whether Prince Edward actually did beat the dogs -- animal welfare organizations across the nation have spoken out strongly against the act.

"People in blood sports tend to show a complete disregard for the welfare of animals," said Barry Hugillm, spokesman of the League Against Cruel Sports. "He has set a truly sickening example."

"It is an offense to cause an animal unnecessary suffering," said Andrew Tyler, director of Animal Aid. "Hitting a dog is a pathetic, cowardly and vicious act. It appear he had a royal tantrum."

Yet the Buckingham Palace spokeswoman maintained that no member of the royal family would knowingly injure an animal.

"They are a dog-loving family," the spokeswoman told The Daily Express. "The Queen, as everyone knows, has several dogs and so do many other members of the family."

This isn't the first time the royal family has fallen into some heat with animal welfare organizations.

In December 2005, Prince Edward was criticized after he battered an injured pigeon to death on a pheasant hunting excursion.

And in 2006, his father, Prince Phillip, drew ire from animal welfare organizations and activists when he clubbed a fox to death with a flagpole during another hunting trip at the Sandringham estate.

I wonder what they do with the animals that they hunt down and kill...do you think that they have them as part of their royal supper?

If he did do this, I hope that they find him guilty & do something to prove that it don't matter what rank you are, you can not get away with such a terrible thing. Prince, King, Queen, President, Celebrity, Etc. it is still abuse & if you do the crime you should do the time.

I care about animals around the world. How anyone can hunt a fox . They chase it until it drops dead, the dogs tear it apart, or they shoot it. How this is called a fun sport is beyond my conprehension. It is all so cruel and uncivilized. If the dogs were fighting perhaps they had a good teacher. Violence in any form is unacceptable. Prince or pauper it makes no difference people are accountable for their cruelty.

Sounds like we need more info on whether the stick made contact with the dog, but I agree with Rachel. If the dogs are afraid of him, that's not good.

I don't know aout all of you but with 27yrs of animal rescue under my belt I have to say that when dogs are fighting you do anything and everything to stop it. I have bully breeds too so this is a comman occurance with this breed. Once they start a fight it is hard to break them up. It sounds like they might be making something out of nothing. He did seperate his dogs and they were not hurt.

Thank you! Exactly what I was trying to say in my earlier post. I'm glad to see others actually think about that before suddenly and violently accusing, as it seems most people are ready to do. Especially large breed dogs - breaking up a fight is not as simply as, 'no, no, don't do that.' When the only other option is let the dogs continue fighting until one's seriously injured or killed, then stronger measures may have to be taken.

Sensationalism strikes again.

You don't swing at a dog to hold the blow off before it makes contact with the dog. It sounds like he needs to find a better way to split up his squabbling dogs.

It sounds like there is some history of animal abuse in the family. I could understand if he was hitting the ground with the stick to break up the fight... I just hope he isn't abusing his dogs.

Looking at the complete set of pictures he could have hit the ground next to the dog to make him cower. In the next picture you can actually see the staff falling out of his hand.

It seems like the news is always trying to make some type of story or head lines to get people to read. He hasn't been tried, sometime your eyes can play tricks on you and maybe he was trying to break up the dogs or maybe someone over reacted.

A little hasty with the accusations...seeing as he could have been making threatening gestures towards the dogs for misbehaving. No evidence of contact so you can't really point fingers too quickly.

It sounds like to me that it is very possible given the fact that there have been prior allegations towards his family with animal cruelty. It also makes me sad, because it's acts like this that give the hunting community a very bad name. I hope that whoever is investigating this story gets to the bottom of it.

After reading the new story about the better animal welfare laws here in the U.S. in 2008, it made me realize that we need to continue to focus on what going on here. What better way to influence other countries with better animal treatment than by setting a good example here? At least we can vote in new laws here. Our hands are tied when it comes to what other countries do.

The article states he was seen "welding" the stick on one dog 3 times. Then, it goes on to state it doesn't know if contact was made. This is very contradictory writing by the reporter. At any rate, as we've seen recently in our own headlines, people in power feel they can take out their anger on anyone or anything. After all, they have the money to pay their way out without a problem. Personally, I'd like to take a stick to him. However, it would be great if our authorities could impose a $30,000 fine as opposed to the slap on the wrist mandated in most states. Julee

I agree absolutely. That was my point. It will be no sweat off his back to pay the consequences. However, in our country, when I watch Animal Planet, it breaks my heart to see the abused animals, the work the animal cops do and procedures they must follow, just to have a judge hand down the verdict of only removing the dogs from the owners care or maybe a $1,000.00 fine at most. It is heartbreaking. So much pain, time, and effort with hardly any consequences at ALL! I believe it should be mandated that anyone caught abusing/neglecting an animal be forced to serve hundreds of hours in community service at a shelter in addition to fines and jail time. Our laws are too lenient to act as a deterrent to anyone. As for the name, tis okay:-). My mother was named Julia and my Dad---Lee. She combined the 2 to make Julee. I've always had to explain:-). At any rate, usually, I'll answer to anything/lol. Julee

It is hard for me to read some of the comments that have been made regarding this article, like we need to worry about animals here rather than in other parts of the world, WE NEED TO WORRY ABOUT ANIMALS.(PERIOD) does not matter where. The article states that this family has had a history of abuse-wake up people-these dogs coward from him-shows history. I will always, always, always stick up for the animals and give them a voice, no matter what. I hope that most of you will do the same. Shame on some of you Zootooers.

I THINK SOME PEOPLE REALLY LIKE TO START PROBLEMS. IF NO ONE WAS CLOSE ENOUGH TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED THEN THEY SHOULD KEEP THEIR MOUTH SHUT. SOME TIMES YOU HAVE TO PUT AN ANIMAL DOWN IF IT IS GOING TO DIE,FOX. SOMETIMES THE ONLY SAVE WAY TO COME BETWEEN TWO DOGS FIGHTING IS WITH A STICK. I'D LIKE TO HEAR WHAT HAPPENED FROM SOME ONE THAT WAS THERE.

I agree with you. Pictures didn't show contact. A dog will cower if you come at it aggressively. As far as the suffering pidgeon and fox, I'm sure they were putting them out of their misery, which I think is more humane. People that trap use clubs and/or guns. Just a fact of life, not a good one, but the truth isn't always pretty.
