Prince Edward Investigated for Beating Dog

Browse News

LONDON -- Prince Edward has been placed under fire by various British animal welfare organizations, after he was photographed raising a stick at two dogs on a recent hunting excavation.

Prince Edward, the fourth child and third son of Queen Elizabeth II, was hunting for pheasant on Queen Elizabeth's private Sandringham estate in Norfolk on Saturday, alongside Prince William, the queen's husband Prince Phillip, and the royal family's second son, Prince Andrew.

The two black Labrador Retrievers accompanying the family on the outing engaged in a squabble over a pheasant that had been shot down.

Prince Edward, also known as the Earl of Essex, was photographed approaching the dogs with his 4-foot-long walking stick in a threatening manner. In the photographic sequence, he is then seen wielding the stick down onto one dog several times.

The photographs do not reveal any actual contact with the dog and the stick, but they do show the Prince chasing after one of the dogs, who appears to be cowering, after the two animals were separated.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is now investigating the incident, after it received several complaints from UK residents who saw the images.

"We'll treat it like any other allegation of cruelty," an unnamed spokeswoman told The Daily Express. "We will take a look and see whether there is anything in it."

A Buckingham Palace spokesman denied Prince Edward actually inflicted any harm on the dogs.

"I can confirm there were two dogs fighting over a pheasant. Prince Edward did separate them but no harm was done to either dog," the spokesman said.

"He broke up the fight with the dogs and pictures show him waving his stick around. We cannot confirm, however, whether he struck the dog."

An unnamed onlooker quoted by the UK Times Online said it "looked to me as if he hit the dog at least three times."

The spectator expressed uncertainty over the cited contact, however.

"But because it was such a long way away I cannot say that he definitely did [hit the dog]. He swung at the dog, then swung at it again, chasing it around the field. He was really angry."

According to The Telegraph, Prince Edward could be prosecuted if it is proven that he beat the dogs unnecessarily. Extreme cases of animal cruelty could result in fines up to 20,000 pounds, or nearly $30,000 U.S. dollars.

Though it is unclear how the case will play out -- let alone whether Prince Edward actually did beat the dogs -- animal welfare organizations across the nation have spoken out strongly against the act.

"People in blood sports tend to show a complete disregard for the welfare of animals," said Barry Hugillm, spokesman of the League Against Cruel Sports. "He has set a truly sickening example."

"It is an offense to cause an animal unnecessary suffering," said Andrew Tyler, director of Animal Aid. "Hitting a dog is a pathetic, cowardly and vicious act. It appear he had a royal tantrum."

Yet the Buckingham Palace spokeswoman maintained that no member of the royal family would knowingly injure an animal.

"They are a dog-loving family," the spokeswoman told The Daily Express. "The Queen, as everyone knows, has several dogs and so do many other members of the family."

This isn't the first time the royal family has fallen into some heat with animal welfare organizations.

In December 2005, Prince Edward was criticized after he battered an injured pigeon to death on a pheasant hunting excursion.

And in 2006, his father, Prince Phillip, drew ire from animal welfare organizations and activists when he clubbed a fox to death with a flagpole during another hunting trip at the Sandringham estate.

Good! Good! I'm thrilled about this! No one has the right to abuse their animals - royalty, celebrity, or bum on the street.

Maybe Edward shouldn't have dogs - the part where it said he was really angry upset me. I wonder what was ever decided about this case.

Did he actually hit the dogs? I think he's spoiled and probably likes to rule the roost but he is under public scrutiny for everything he does and that's tough.

The royals are quite blood-thirsty for their 'blood-sports'. I do find these blood-sports archaic and repulsive. It does nothing positive for their image, either.

With all their money and status, you would think this buffoon would have learned correct animal handling techniques before taking the dogs out. Sounds more like he is taking out his frustration on the innocent animals, and his Mommy will make sure he receives no punishment. What a pathetic example he is setting for the citizens of his country.

It could result in a fine equal to 30,000 dollars? Why don't we have that -HERE-? -.-' Ugh.

If he was 'just separating the dogs' he could have done it in a better way. I would rather get bit, than smack some poor dog around. -Shrugs- He was probably doing one of those massive ego trips, and made a huge mistake.

I hope he gets his royal rump fined for it, in such a case.

I think it's lame that people with big egoes need to take out aggression on animals to feel better. Maybe he should try hunting without the dogs. I also hope he eats the meat when he hunts and doesn't do it just to kill something for fun.

People need to reserve judgment until the facts are known. The British tabloid media loves to hound the royals with sensational stories that cause public outcry. While I in no way want to condone the beating of animals, I think human beings also deserve to avoid unnecessary beatings as well...

I completely agree. Even 'facts' can be twisted around to make a situation sensationalized, just something to sell papers, encourage site hits, and rouse society into a sort of frenzy.

Hmm, I also wonder how most people break up a violent dog fight. I don't agree with abusing animals, but breaking up a dog fight isn't exactly a safe or easy thing, either. Like I said, the facts and photos can be twisted with the right spin just to get people worked up.

Very good point. Also, it appears that he was trying to keep one dog from hurting the other one. I think the word "beating" is being used in a very sensational manner.

Is this another case of some spoiled, rich snob who thinks that lawa and feelings of compassion only apply to us commoners?

If guilty, prison is a good place for him.

Someone needs to hit him with the same stick he hit the dogs with and see how he likes it. I can not stand this type of behavior. To hear that the dog was cowering just makes me sick to my stomach. It really infuriates me, especially because I have rescue dogs and I see what they go through. I try to rehabilitate them and some of them will come around, but others will never stop cowering. It is heartbreaking! This should never happen to any animal! These animals look to us for love, protection, food, everything. How could one possibly do this to them?! It completely infuritates me!!

Clubbing a pigeon? Beating a fox? Sounds like Prince E has some anger issues. I hope something is actually done about this. Oh, and owning a lot of dogs doesn't mean you are kind to animals. Micheal Vick had a lot of dogs too...

I hate this kind of sensational article. Swinging a stick and beating a dog are not the same thing. I guess they wouldn't sell enough newspapers by having a headline "Prince Edward Investigated for Swinging Stick".

It should not matter if they are royalty, sports stars, actors/actresses, they all should be held accountable if the charge is true.

I hope they do investigate and make sure if true, the Prince is charged and maybe even not allowed to own any pets or be around animals for x number of years.
