Price is Right for Animal Rights Studies

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Bob Barker, animal lover and former host of The Price is Right, heads to his alma mater next week to make a donation. According The Seattle Times Barker plans to give $1 million for a new undergraduate animal-ethics program at Drury University.

The school will receive a grant for a new program called the Bob Barker Endowment Fund for the Study of Animal Rights.

You may recall Barker’s sign off at the end of each episode when he said, “Please be nice to the pet population, and have your pet spayed or neutered.”

His dedication to animals hasn’t ended with his retirement.

The first class in the new program will cover animal ethics and is aimed at informing students about issues that effect animals.

This is Barker’s first donation to an undergraduate program. In the past, he’s given funds for animal-rights curricula at notable law schools nationwide, including Northwestern, Columbia and Harvard.

What a great idea! I wish they taught animal ethics in all schools starting with kindergarden and going through college so everyone would be reached!

Bob Barker has done a great job over the years of reminding the public of their responsibility to their pets, always ending his show with the note to spay and neuter. It's great to see that he has continued to be a powerful voice even in his retirement.

I was hoping that another TV host would carry on his plea to spay and neuter. If people hear it often enough, they might actually do it. Perhaps the graduates of the program he is funding will carry on his good work.

Bob has always been a huge supporter of animals. This is only fitting for him to continue his generosity after retirement. I wouldn't be surprised if a shelter near his hasn't named something after him.

I guess education is the place to start - I still think if I had a million dollars to give that I would spay and neuter as many animals as I could for that money.

If every celebrity picked out a cause like this to dedicate themeselves to, just think how many of their "groupies" would jump on the bandwagon. Nice to see someone famous in the news for going something good for a change.
