Price is Right for Animal Rights Studies

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Bob Barker, animal lover and former host of The Price is Right, heads to his alma mater next week to make a donation. According The Seattle Times Barker plans to give $1 million for a new undergraduate animal-ethics program at Drury University.

The school will receive a grant for a new program called the Bob Barker Endowment Fund for the Study of Animal Rights.

You may recall Barker’s sign off at the end of each episode when he said, “Please be nice to the pet population, and have your pet spayed or neutered.”

His dedication to animals hasn’t ended with his retirement.

The first class in the new program will cover animal ethics and is aimed at informing students about issues that effect animals.

This is Barker’s first donation to an undergraduate program. In the past, he’s given funds for animal-rights curricula at notable law schools nationwide, including Northwestern, Columbia and Harvard.

Kudos to Bob for maintaining and continuing his care and concern for animal welfare over DECADES not only on his television show (I can still remember him ending "The Price is Right" with his famous comment!) but now into his retirement as well. That's commitment!

My favorite grand-daughter,(she's the only grand-daughter!) plans on going to law school to study animal law, and I passed this on to her.

This is an interesting idea, to make animal rights a funded area of study. It will be good to follow up on this and see what becomes of this donation.

Are you in favor of people no longer having the right to own pets? Because that's what animal rights is about-- making animals "equal" to humans and not allowing people to love and take care of pets.

Not exactly. The main meaning of animals rights is actually more along the lines of animal welfare.

It is wonderful to see a celebrity doing something beneficial to animals and passionate about the cause. Such a difference from the awful stories we hear about Paris Hilton who abandoned her cat at the vet.

Bob Barker is a wonderful man! I remember his advice to spay and neuter your pet from when i was really little, all i knew at that time is that it made my grandma happy.

Bob Barker has always put animals first, and he really did reach a lot of people by always urging at the end of each of his "Price Is Right" shows that people have their pets spayed and neutered. I wish that message was given more often, on more shows, to more people!
