Price is Right for Animal Rights Studies

Browse News

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Bob Barker, animal lover and former host of The Price is Right, heads to his alma mater next week to make a donation. According The Seattle Times Barker plans to give $1 million for a new undergraduate animal-ethics program at Drury University.

The school will receive a grant for a new program called the Bob Barker Endowment Fund for the Study of Animal Rights.

You may recall Barker’s sign off at the end of each episode when he said, “Please be nice to the pet population, and have your pet spayed or neutered.”

His dedication to animals hasn’t ended with his retirement.

The first class in the new program will cover animal ethics and is aimed at informing students about issues that effect animals.

This is Barker’s first donation to an undergraduate program. In the past, he’s given funds for animal-rights curricula at notable law schools nationwide, including Northwestern, Columbia and Harvard.

Hat's off to Mr. Barker. More philanthropies need to invest in animal issues, whether it be for domestic animals, farm animals or wild animals. Thanks to people like Mr. Barker and organizations like Petsmart Charities.

Bob Barker and Drury University make a great team. I am heartened to hear about an animal ethics program being added to the curriculum. I think a lot of young people will be interested in it!

Bob Barker is a fine man and is to be applauded. An endowment for the study of animal rights can only be good. Just last November Mr. Barker played a large part in the drama of Maggie, Alaska's lone African elephants. After a long dispute between the Alaska Zoo (who wanted her to remain) and those wanting to get her to a more suitable climate (including the animal advocacy group In Defense of Animals) Maggie finally won her freedom and was sent to the Performing Animal Welfare Society in San Andres, California. The move could not have become a reality without the help of Bob Barker who promised to donate a large sum of money for her care.

You could always count on him to say his famous line at the end of the show. I think this is great, but maybe he should split his money up between shelters or something.

I agree with you, Denise. Most of the people who are harming animals KNOW that they are doing an awful thing. They don't need awareness efforts to tell them that. Helping a shelter may be far more effective than donating towards education. Nonetheless, I can applaud that he is doing SOMETHING for the cause. Also, great that he gave his plug for animal rights at the end of each Price is Right episode!

Glad to see he still has his passion. If only other stars would donate some of their huge salaries to such efforts, maybe animals would have more rights.

I was elated to see an episode of "The Apprentice -- Celebrity Version" where contestants had to make a commercial urging people to adopt animals from shelters. It was the first time that I have seen star power used to promote this cause. Seriously, so much celeb money is wasted on petty things, and so much time is spent promoting petty activities... why not use that fame to make a difference??

I think this is great and Bob is wonderful for his love of animals. I admire him and Betty White for all they have contributed to help those who cannot help themselves. I know there are a lot of others we do not hear about. But it seems there are so many who abuse these great companions.
