Price is Right for Animal Rights Studies

Browse News

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Bob Barker, animal lover and former host of The Price is Right, heads to his alma mater next week to make a donation. According The Seattle Times Barker plans to give $1 million for a new undergraduate animal-ethics program at Drury University.

The school will receive a grant for a new program called the Bob Barker Endowment Fund for the Study of Animal Rights.

You may recall Barker’s sign off at the end of each episode when he said, “Please be nice to the pet population, and have your pet spayed or neutered.”

His dedication to animals hasn’t ended with his retirement.

The first class in the new program will cover animal ethics and is aimed at informing students about issues that effect animals.

This is Barker’s first donation to an undergraduate program. In the past, he’s given funds for animal-rights curricula at notable law schools nationwide, including Northwestern, Columbia and Harvard.

Bob Barker continues to honor his late wife Dorothy Jo. Everyone, no matter how much or how little money they have when they depart this world, can leave some legacy for a cause they care about.

Good for you, Mr. Barker. I respect your dedication to spaying and neutering animals to end the overpopulation problem. I do wish though that your donations for this end would include cats as well as dogs. We have a much bigger overpopulation of cats than dogs in our area.

It seems like Mr Barker was one of the first "celebrities" to come out in support of a cause like this. It is a very important cause but, with Brad, Bono, and Angelina focused on more headline grabbing issues, it's nice someone is looking out for the animals.

I always liked Bob Barker. I think it is great to put the money towards education. The more educated people are about animals, the better laws can be made, better care can be given and the animals benefit.

A noble way to give back. Spay/neuter is a very important message if that what his donation will promote.

Glad to see that his initiative (again) involves educating the public about the issues that concern animals and pets. Education is the beginning to opening more eyes and ears to the issues.

Yes, they should. What would be considered so little to the celebs would mean a world of difference to a shelter or a neuter program or an educational program.

I am so glad that people like Bob Barker, Ellen DeGenerous (spelling?), etc. do the things they do for animals. So many highly visable, wealthy (Hollywood type) people choose issues across the world that have nothing to do with helping the common issues that are wrong and in need right here in our own worlds.

I'm not saying that adopting children from 3rd world countries or saving the rain forests aren't important but for heaven sakes Bill Gates - every pet owner in the country bought one of your operating systems to run their computers, how about giving 1 or 2 billion to the animals.......

Good job Bob Barker!
