Preparing Your Pet for the Stork's Delivery

Browse News

MADISON, Wis. - “My dog is my baby,” is a common phrase among dog owners. But what happens when it is time to welcome home a newborn? Training your pet to be prepared for the new addition can be the difference between your child's safety and potential problems.

Anne and Jason Khodadad were getting ready for one of the most exciting moments in their lives, but their furry family member was not so sure this was the best idea.

“I felt a little nervous because I wasn’t sure how (our dog), Red, would react to having a new baby in the house,” said Anne Khodadad.

According to dog trainer Tiffany Gutman, the couple's fear is common, and one that can and should be addressed well before the newborn arrives.

“People would call and say, 'You know what, my baby’s mobile now and all of a sudden (the dog is) growling, it’s barking, I’m afraid.' ” Gutman said. “And unfortunately a lot of those people were just re-homing these dogs or getting rid of them.

Gutman said that many animals, especially dogs, are surrendered to shelters each year.

“I’m here to tell you, it doesn’t have to happen,” she said. “We spend nine months getting ourselves ready and then we forget about the dog. Then all of a sudden blam! We bring baby home and we do nothing and we think they will just get along.”

But Gutman said this is a transition that doesn’t have to be as difficult as that, with some simple planning and effort.

“It’s a process that maintains,” she said. “If you’re in the hospital, if someone can bring home a blanket so the dog can get a scent before baby even comes into the house.”

“One of the things we did was we set up the crib and the bed and some baby toys early so that they wouldn’t be new in the house when the baby came home,” said Anne Khodadad.

And as Gutman predicted, the planning paid off.

“I feel comfortable with the baby and the dog in the same house,” said Anne Khodadad. “I never worry if they’re in the same area. I know that Red is comfortable having the baby here.”

Now with a room full of more and more toys Anne and Jason are expecting another new addition to the family. But this time they are a little more at ease.

There are some tell tale warning signs that your dog isn't feeling comfortable, which Gutman said signs are key to take note of.

If dogs are wining because of less attention during pregnancy, it’s a good idea to start the training process right away.

Dogs are all about space. A new baby violates that space. Start training the dog by giving separation and space guidelines.

Last and most importantly, never pet your dog if he or she reacts to the baby. You will think you’re calming it down, but you’re really showing affection and encouraging the behavior.

If you have a little one on the way and want to make sure the transition goes smoothly, Gutman has produced a DVD titled “Parenting your Pack” to help new parents through the transition. For more information or to purchase the DVD visit pawsitivlyk9s.com.

I wish people would try harder and not give up on the dog. It's an adjustment they have to make like everyone.

There is a need to educate expectant parents. Thousands of dogs are surrendered to shelters every day with the excuse "new baby in the house". This is not necessary. You can help your pet welcome a new family member. Most likely the dog will be the baby's best friend.

I hope this article appears in "Parent" magazine. I have been apalled in the past to see articles in several magazines advising new parents to get rid of all pets in the home. They state that babies can develop allergies and that the parents time now should be devoted to the child only. We need more ciculation of articles like this one.
It sickens me when we get dogs at the SPCA of Central Florida that have been surrendered because of a new baby on the way.

Not only dogs needs to be prepared, but so do cats. But, no matter how comfortable you feel after the baby comes home, you should never leave the baby around an animal without full supervision. Babies make fast movements which can scare the animal.

I couldn't agree with you more. Always supervise your child and pet. When your not going to be in the same room with them separate them.

This happens all the time turning your animal into the pound and I'm glad to see that now you can prepare ahead of time for everyone to adjust to a new baby

This is an excellent article and to the point. How many animals are turned into shelters every year because people do not prepare their pets for the newborn baby.

Very good to bring up this issue - far too many cats and dogs brought to shelters when the new baby arrives - they are family members, also. Things should not end up with the pet homeless. It's just a matter of learning.

I loved the ideas suggested about preparing your pets. Another thing though is preparing your dog or cat for another pet to be introduced. I'd love to see some
information on this. Three years ago, it took a couple of weeks for our older dog
to like the idea of a new pet member of the family. But it worked out great.

Glad this is finally getting some attention - you don't throw away the pet when the baby comes - you work it out! So many pets are dumped at shelters for this reason. And it is so unnecessary.

That's really sad. But new parents may not be able to balance it all as far as getting
everyone comfortable with each other.

Good ideas. I think people have to remember to still give their pets attention after the baby comes home so they don't get jealous.

This is good info... I always knew when we decided to have children we'd be very careful to make our dog comfortable and keep everyone safe and happy. If they are a member of your family you include them and make it work!

Wish more people would read about this I am so heart sick of getting dog back because there is a new baby in the family these poor dogs are so sad when there people abandon them some wont eat for days and some nerve get over the loss. If you have a dog and are going to have kids take the time to teach you dog to be good with them don't just rely on magic and then dump the dog when they fail to meet your unreasonable expectation.

this is good info.! I have heard of so many people getting rid of their pets because of a baby, and it takes a little effort to get a dog ready. I was told to bring home the blanket when I had my son, and I was also told to have a babydoll in the house before he was born. The babydoll cried, and I would hold it to get my dog used to hearing a crying noise, and seeing me giving attention to someone besides her. it just takes patience.
