Postal Worker Trapped by Dogs, Later Rescued

Browse News

HANOVER, Pa. – A mail carrier delivering on her route near Hanover, Pa., became trapped in her mail car for two hours when a pair of dogs ‘attacked’ her vehicle.

Robin Barton doesn’t normally deliver on the route she was working Wednesday. So she was a bit surprised when she pulled into the long, steep driveway of Stephanie Dekelbaum’s home, and was met by two dogs – a Rottweiler and a pit bull-mix.

More astonishing than the dogs’ presence was their behavior. Upon seeing Barton, the canines began acting aggressively; barking, running around the vehicle while snarling and snipping. Soon they began biting at the Jeep Cherokee’s tires, and eventually punctured three of them.

The dogs, named Judge and Justice, hadn’t been caged – rather an electric fence was used to keep them in the yard, but apparently not off the driveway.

Although safely locked inside the Jeep, Barton said she was frightened – and unable to drive away because of the flat tires. And since no one was home at the time, her only option was to call for help.

Using a cell phone, Barton contacted authorities. When they arrived, the dogs began biting the squad car tires, so the officers backed down the driveway, not wanting to get stuck, too.

Unable to get to Barton, the officers called animal control, planning to tranquilize the dogs. Then, they thought, a tow truck could pull the mail vehicle off the property.

But before any of that could happen, the dogs’ owner, Stephanie Dekelbaum, returned home. Authorities say upon seeing their mom, the dogs’ behavior transformed from aggressive home protectors to happy, excited puppies.

They followed Dekelbaum, who was surprised by the sight of two police cars and a disabled mail truck in front of her home, inside.

Dekelbaum apologized to Barton, who raises Beagles and still likes dogs despite the ordeal, and explained that the dogs’ recently were given a tire chew toy.

“They’re generally sweethearts,” Dekelbaum said.

Another postal worker completed Barton’s route that day. No charges will be pressed against Dekelbaum, although she may be asked for reimbursement of the vehicle’s tires.

For the dogs' own safety as well as the safety of strangers they shouldn't have been left out when nobody was home.

people should be more responsible about their dogs exspecialy since these breeds are more argressive about some things , the owner of any breed like this should understand that they need to be aware of the dangers of leaveing the dogs unattended like that , its a shame owners do not keep a better eye on their pets regardless , becausee these stories tend to scare people into not liking the breeds becuase all you get to hear is bad things about them when realy they are both a great breed as long as they have been raised properly.

Just highlights the importance of training good behavior in your dogs. I would also be surprised if I drove into someone's driveway and their dogs punctured my tires. Dogs are not "supposed" to be protective to the point of endangering other people under reasonable circumstances, such as trying to deliver your mail. Why did she sit there for two hours though, if she had a cell phone? First of all, why not back out of the driveway as soon as you see the dogs running towards you aggressively rather than wait for them to puncture your tires? And second, if you are stuck, why not call immediately?

Read the first part people. The mail deliverer drove onto the woman's property.
So, she drove onto the owner's property and we're surprised how the dogs acted?
They were being protective. That is what dogs are supposed to do!

An electric fence was a stupid idea. They should be in backyard behind a privacy fence. All rottweilers are territorial of home to a certain extent ,unless owners are there. I had a rottweiler she was great. But i socialized her with all types of people young and old. She never had met a stranger ,very out going loved everyone. I don't see how lady wouldn't know behavior patterns of her own dogs. If your going to own a Pitt or Rottweiler socialize them early and often. It very well could be a child next time, there is nothing preventing a child from entering yard.

I think the mail carrier did the right thing by staying in her vehicle, but she could have driven the vehicle slowly down the drive to the tow truck on the flat tires if she wanted to. So what happens if it's a child next time? Will she still feel the same way about her dogs then?

It sounds like to me these dogs have been taught more than just chewing on tires. This is why pitbulls get a bad name. People train these dogs to be aggressive and fight. I think more investigation into this should happen.

I understand having a dog that is capable of protecting your home. However, not taking proper measures to keep them in the house/safe from strangers while away is unacceptable. It gives the dog breeds bad names.

Couldn't the mail carrier have left before getting flat tires? And then make a note for the post office to call the individual to inform them of the incident and why their mail was not delivered.

Hmm sounds a little strange to me. Dogs biting through tires but this lady isn't pressing tires. They sounded like fighting type dogs to me at first. I am a bit confused I think something more should be done, seems like these dogs need to be checked out.

we had a little dog that was sweet as pie around our family. I trusted him completely around my toddler and newborn. Was I ever surprised to witness him charging and breaking skin of someone. Animals do act different when away from their family as do our kids. I feel for the postal worker though. I am sure she was concerned of hurting an animal that was circling the vehicle and stopped.

Why on earth didn't she back out as soon as the dogs approached her? The dogs should not have been running around loose but in her situation I would have left immediately. Too bad, the mail would not have been delivered. Sorry about that.

Well ! Here we are, again ! I wonder if the dogs had been agressive Golden Retrievers, whether this story would have made "The News". (According to some sources, Rottweillers and Pit Bulls don't bite any harder that other large dogs) And, yes, tires can be punctured by biting animals. (Tires have a thin side wall-It's easy to puncture) So, the Rotweillers and Pit Bulls are the bad guys, once again !

Dogs can bite through a tire, I have seen it happen. My friend's parents in Pennsylvania had a rottie shep mix that would chase cars and motorcycles and when the people would stop because they were afraid that they were going to hit the dog, he would bite the tires and puncture them. Dog didn't like people either. But they were on a farm and thought it was ok to just let him run!!

You can drive on a flat tire so the mail carrier could have backed out the driveway without incident. Don't know about a dog bitting through a tire. I may be wrong but I don't think they could get their mouth all the way around one.

I think this sounds phony. Tires don't go flat like balloons and you can drive away from dogs as soon as they look dangerous.

No at all believable.

These dogs were protecting their property - which the owner has a right to do. These breeds are bred for guarding, and acting completely within breed expectations. This postal worker was a new and different presence on the property, they are supposed to react. I wonder how the woman's response contributed to their reaction. She would have drove away - no gotten hysterical and froze (which she must have done, in order for the dogs to chew holes in three tires!!) Come on!

I wonder why the mail lady didn't just drive away. They couldn't have destroyed all 3 tires at once. And they definately should not have been left outside.

Whole story sounds funny. Why would the electric fence not keep them off the driveway too? Why leave them out then when no one is home? I would of drove away on rims if I had to. And yes she should of been charged, things could of ended up alot worse. Chew toy tire, o.k.

I'm a mail carrier and I can't tell you how many times owners will tell me that their dogs are sweethearts and won't hurt a fly. But they don't know how the dogs act when they are not home. This is a prime example of that. Our district has a policy now that if there is a loose dog we don't get out of the vehicle!!

I don't think "recently given a tire chew toy" caused this situation. These dogs are dangerous--what would have happened if it was a bicyclist or a pedestrian. Hopefully, this isn't a situation of a tragedy waiting to happen.

Wow. Friendly as they are to the owner, those are dangerous dogs. What if that had been a kid on a bike straying onto the property? Time to get a TALL fence and also keep those dogs INSIDE when the owner is not home and/or outside with them. I don't think they can be trusted outdoors unless someone is right there. That's a tragedy waiting to happen...for a person AND the dogs...

Sounds to me like the dogs were protecting the home....or having a lot of fun with the tires! It's not as if they stop to think that if they puncture the tire, then the car can't leave. Geez. But now that the homeowner understands how they do guard when she's not around, she can fix the situation to make sure someone doesn't get hurt on accident. I'm glad that the police and mailman were understanding.

Those are some big teeth to flatten car tires! An electric fence isn't full proof. If the collar battery goes dead, the dogs can go in and out of the yard with out a problem. Also, some dogs can get so excited that they will run out of the yard without worrying about the shock from the fence but then are too scared to go back in the yard.
