Postal Worker Trapped by Dogs, Later Rescued

HANOVER, Pa. – A mail carrier delivering on her route near Hanover, Pa., became trapped in her mail car for two hours when a pair of dogs ‘attacked’ her vehicle.

Robin Barton doesn’t normally deliver on the route she was working Wednesday. So she was a bit surprised when she pulled into the long, steep driveway of Stephanie Dekelbaum’s home, and was met by two dogs – a Rottweiler and a pit bull-mix.

More astonishing than the dogs’ presence was their behavior. Upon seeing Barton, the canines began acting aggressively; barking, running around the vehicle while snarling and snipping. Soon they began biting at the Jeep Cherokee’s tires, and eventually punctured three of them.

The dogs, named Judge and Justice, hadn’t been caged – rather an electric fence was used to keep them in the yard, but apparently not off the driveway.

Although safely locked inside the Jeep, Barton said she was frightened – and unable to drive away because of the flat tires. And since no one was home at the time, her only option was to call for help.

Using a cell phone, Barton contacted authorities. When they arrived, the dogs began biting the squad car tires, so the officers backed down the driveway, not wanting to get stuck, too.

Unable to get to Barton, the officers called animal control, planning to tranquilize the dogs. Then, they thought, a tow truck could pull the mail vehicle off the property.

But before any of that could happen, the dogs’ owner, Stephanie Dekelbaum, returned home. Authorities say upon seeing their mom, the dogs’ behavior transformed from aggressive home protectors to happy, excited puppies.

They followed Dekelbaum, who was surprised by the sight of two police cars and a disabled mail truck in front of her home, inside.

Dekelbaum apologized to Barton, who raises Beagles and still likes dogs despite the ordeal, and explained that the dogs’ recently were given a tire chew toy.

“They’re generally sweethearts,” Dekelbaum said.

Another postal worker completed Barton’s route that day. No charges will be pressed against Dekelbaum, although she may be asked for reimbursement of the vehicle’s tires.

I drove for Fedex for many years and the worst experience I had was with a Giant Poodle. He did NOT like me or my truck and chased me back into it. The worst though were the little ankle biter dogs, they can get pretty aggressive. I always carried a big bag of dog bones from WalMart in my truck in case I ran into any dogs. Better to make friends with them than to be scared of them! I never had any attack my truck tires though.

I personally don't feel that electric fence barriers are a solution to anything. They are a good idea in theory, but don't really work that well. I know people who have used them and then their dogs get "immune" (for lack of a better word) to them and just go right past them. People should learn that dogs are territorial/protective of what is theirs. Pets need a real barrier for their protection as well as other peoples/pets protection.

lucky, lucky lucky glad everyone was okay mail lady did not get hert, dogs wernt taken away

I am glad she was okay and didn't freak out. I think a sign should have been posted saying to beware of dogs- and the dogs should be in an actual fence with a hotwirw/electric wire on the top/bottom (whichever is a more likely spot for them to escape)

It is rather a good story of the dogs protecting their territory. They were not trying to hurt her, just keeping people away while Mama wasn't home. People show fear to animals especially certain breeds which makes a dog more aggressive especially when they are in protective mode. I have 5 dogs. The most aggressive one in my bunch is not my lab/ great pyrenese mix, but my corgi. He is the one that will put the service men at bay when no one is at home.

I'm glad everything turned out for the good and the postal worker wasn't hurt

First off, these dogs should have been in the house while their owner was away. I understand that they are trained and respect the electric fence, but that does not stop people, other animals, or vehicles from entering that area. This is why I never recommend electric fences to my adopters. They may keep your pet in your yard, but they won't keep other things out of your property.

Secondly, there is no way that a new tire toy would make dogs attack a vehicle. Unless perhaps she meant a real tire (ie hung from a tree), but that would be more something done by people looking to train their dogs to attack.

Third, I just want to point out the humor in the names. Judge and Justice made the police back down.

why weren't these dog tied up? isn't their a leash law? That lady could have been seriously hurt due to the carelessness of the owners. More irresponsible owners!

she should have put those dogs in a kennel or the backyard in a secure fence. At least the postal worker wasn't injured.

a lot of unusual things about this story...the dogs certainly didnt seem like "sweethearts" as they were puncturing the tires...fortunately, the authorities practiced patience and didnt put the dogs down but the owner needs to take better precautions to protect her pets and others

don't leave dogs out front alone while you are gone

ok, this stupid broad shouldn't have left her dogs outside while she was gone. What if they had attacked the mail carrier and done some serious harm. Would she still say they are generally sweethearts? Stupid , irresponsible owners make everyone look bad.

I use to live near someone who's great dane popped the mailman's tires three times. I don't know what it is about tires. the dog was great with the neighbor people/animals. I don't know what the deal is, some dogs just hate cars-it may be that the vehicle made a noise that bothered them. My dog hates the UPS/Fedex trucks. And yeah, she could have drove away a little bit to get away from them....seen it on COPS enough times.

Somehow I doubt that a dog getting a tire as a chew toy would make it attack a mail truck and police cars.

Glad the postal worker is ok. I agree the dog's owner sould kennel or cage her dogs if they are aggressive when left unattended to prevent injury to someone else or their possible death.

This is the fault of the dog's owner and I think that she should be held responsible. People need to know their pets well enough to prevent incidents like this from happening. As far as I am concerned a postal employee (or anyone) should not be subjected to situation like this. The dogs should be in the house or kenneled when the owner is away.

This is an unusual situation because the dogs were on her property. Perhaps they should have been kenneled due to their obvious ability at guarding their home (which you cannot fault them for). Seems to me that if you put up signs that say "Beware of Dog" would absolve you of any problems when someone trespasses (not that this mail lady was) but instead... it gets you into more trouble because you are advertising that you have a "dangerous" animal on the premises. That doesn't make sense.

beware of dog/no trespassing doesn't work with postal delivery/package delivery. It said there was an electric fence....I guess I definitely will not use one of those.

I am an owner of a large dog myself and understand how easily they go after postal carriers. I never have my dogs outside when I am not home, ever! And, when I owned a house with a driveway, there was always a lock on my gate so that they could not get out and do this sort of thing. Believe me my dogs are big babies at heart, but the site of the postal uniform has always put them into a frenzy!

I guess the dogs went a bit postal. Just a joke. I think the Postal employee did the correct thing keeping inside the vehicle. Thank heaven the story ended well, with no one hurt and the dogs happy too!

The postal worker did the right think by staying in the car. I would have stayed in it forever if that's what it took.

Although I love my German Shep., I do not take my attention away from him.

How frightening that muat have benn for the mail carrier. We all have to be responsible pet owners. It only takes one bad incident to lose a pet. I hope the owner is more aware and is taking better care of her dogs.

If you have an electric fence it should be zoned so that the area that the dogs are allowed to roam in is far enough away from the possibility of contact with people.

the owner needs help to train her dogs to not be so aggressive with others on their property. And I don't think it's a good idea to leave your dogs alone in a electric fence. A child or elderly person could be easily attacked.

This owner needs to address an aggression situation with her dogs, I think. I find it hard to believe, based on this behavior, that they are really sweethearts. Maybe to their owner...but not in general. And a tire chew toy is no excuse. I'm glad to hear that the postal worker has not lost any love for dogs! That must have been quite a scary ordeal.

I am a postal worker and this happened to me once too. It was kind of scary but the owners came home and I was only there for about 15 minutes. Now I carry bones for the dogs and we have made peace. Dogs are easy to befriend. You just have to respect them and be patient.

I think these dogs need to be inside of a cage maybe behind the house. Even the sweetest dogs can do things you wouldnt normally think they would do.

What a scary situation. These two breeds of dogs scare me. I don't hear very many good things about them. Yet some owners say thay are sweet and gentle. I don't know what to think, maybe it has to do in how they are raised.

I think these dogs should be on a chain or in the house and not left unattended..What would they have done if someone was walking down the street and didn't have a vehicle to stay in? I think something should have been done other than just new tires.
