It really is a shame they don't make provisions for a retired dog's medical expenses. I am sure the officers are willing to do it for their dear friend, but it could be very costly, especially when a dog has been injured in the line of duty.

Way to go Bowie! Glad the dogs are honored for their willing service when they retire and it looks like a great event. I'm happy the dog will remain with his handler and family but I still think they should receive SOME kind of stipend for future medical emergencies for the dog.

It is truly amazing how much these dogs make for the city in confiscated land and property from drug deals. Yet, the city won't cover for the after care of these dogs!? Greed.

Glad his is retired, but you would like there might be health insurance or something for the dog as a pension plan...

I'm glad the dog is being recognized, even though he hasn't a clue what is going on, except he gets a real treat--a peice of cake.

A feel good story. Bowie is a real beauty and will have a long happy retirement with Mr. McDaniel and family. One puzzling thing--after six years of giving 100 per cent, why won't the city of Cedar Rapids take care of his "expenses"?

I think these dogs provide an amazing service to us humans. I would like to see more "mutts" and shelter dogs used in these jobs instead of always using pure breeds.
