Pinups for Pit bulls

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Each year, a group operating out of Pennsylvania works together to create awareness for a certain canine breed that are almost always looked down upon.

Pinups and pit bulls may sound like an odd combination. But for calendar founder Deirdre Guerin, it’s her contribution to improving public perception of the breed.

Across the nation, stories covering pit bull attacks are printed daily. As a result government bodies have proposed breed bans, fearful of potential attacks. The first pedigree on the list is commonly pit bulls. Few have made it into law – but the fact that a breed ban is the best solution legislatures come up with indicates that the stereotype supersedes reality.

Cognizant of public perception, Guerin created the calendar two years ago to raise awareness and money to help rescue pit bulls. She wants the public to know that pits are peaceful, loyal dogs.

In fact, their obedient nature may be why the breed was chosen to fight.

It wasn’t always that way, though. Throughout history and dating back to the Civil War, pits have played an important role. During World War I for example, a dog named Stubby gained notoriety for his service to the Army’s 102nd infantry. The dog was known for comforting wounded soldiers, keeping watch and once captured a German spy.

But through the years, ill-minded breeders have destroyed pit bulls’ once noble standing in American culture by training them to fight. Today, perception of the dogs as brutal beasts reigns.

In an effort to change that, Guerin and 11 other models, with their furry co-models, pose for the camera. It’s one example of how dedicated pit lovers are working to change the stereotypes. All their hard work is paying off considering last year they raised $11,000.

And at the end of the day, or end of the year for that matter, the pinups just want people to stop giving pit bulls a bad reputation. To show your support for the struggling breed, go to Pinupsforpitbulls.com.

I think this is wonderful!! I have people in my family that raise these animals, and they are well behaved. My dad has one in the house and he plays with my 4 year old all the time. Beans has been watching after my son since he was born.
But this goes back to people putting an end to what this dog was breed for. If this breed could still practice what they were breed for there would be less of the fighting rings. People did not want this breed to die off, so they found a new job for them.
This is one of the facts that people need to look at when they are downing hunting dogs. If the hunting dog can not do what they are breed to do, then people will find something else to do with them.

It is really nice to have something be done about this. I hate always seeing articles about how horrible pit bulls are. I know these attacks are serious (first hand experience) but I also know it is not the dog's fault. People need to stop breeding them this way just so they can be entertained. It isn't even fun to watch fights, and it is horrible that their lives aren't valued in this society.

Clever idea. Sounds like a good way to get exposure for the dogs. The bad apples usually ruin it for everyone. Surely there are kind pit bulls out there that have been raised in loving homes. Hope the calendar continues to be successful.

Very unique idea. It's great that there are still so many people willing to stand up and defend these beautiful creatures who have a bad rep because of how they were warped and molded by humans.

im glad people can get over the fact that some pits are bad, not all. just like with every other breed. if dogs are bred for fighting its a problem, thats why you have to weed out the breeders, not the dogs

I was very impressed to see that some people know about this breed and many others like the Pit. It is not the dog! It is the people that raise them that makes them they way they are. To many people forget that dogs are trained to do most of what they do that people want them to do and banning and killing so many dogs just because of the breed they are is so unfair. The people that make them that way should be made to pay alot more than what the courts are giving them now.

May I add they are not simply "trained" but "bred", as well, to do the things they do. I concur with your thoughts!
