Pinups for Pit bulls

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Each year, a group operating out of Pennsylvania works together to create awareness for a certain canine breed that are almost always looked down upon.

Pinups and pit bulls may sound like an odd combination. But for calendar founder Deirdre Guerin, it’s her contribution to improving public perception of the breed.

Across the nation, stories covering pit bull attacks are printed daily. As a result government bodies have proposed breed bans, fearful of potential attacks. The first pedigree on the list is commonly pit bulls. Few have made it into law – but the fact that a breed ban is the best solution legislatures come up with indicates that the stereotype supersedes reality.

Cognizant of public perception, Guerin created the calendar two years ago to raise awareness and money to help rescue pit bulls. She wants the public to know that pits are peaceful, loyal dogs.

In fact, their obedient nature may be why the breed was chosen to fight.

It wasn’t always that way, though. Throughout history and dating back to the Civil War, pits have played an important role. During World War I for example, a dog named Stubby gained notoriety for his service to the Army’s 102nd infantry. The dog was known for comforting wounded soldiers, keeping watch and once captured a German spy.

But through the years, ill-minded breeders have destroyed pit bulls’ once noble standing in American culture by training them to fight. Today, perception of the dogs as brutal beasts reigns.

In an effort to change that, Guerin and 11 other models, with their furry co-models, pose for the camera. It’s one example of how dedicated pit lovers are working to change the stereotypes. All their hard work is paying off considering last year they raised $11,000.

And at the end of the day, or end of the year for that matter, the pinups just want people to stop giving pit bulls a bad reputation. To show your support for the struggling breed, go to Pinupsforpitbulls.com.

It is time to stop stereotyping all pit bulls as being "attack animals". I think it is overdue that some try to help. My neice volunteers at an animal shelter in Cincinnati and bonded with a dog that was part pit bull - her homeowner's insurance refused to allow her to adopt the dog. Fortunately, he was adopted by someone else but it is sad that someone else had the final decision on this.

This is a great story!!! Kudo's to them for shining the light on the fact that not all pit bulls are dangerous it's the humans that are dangerous and have made the dogs that way! I wish them luck and hope they are very successful!

All pits aren't bad. They just get so much bad press. I think this is a great opportunity to raise awareness and educate people.

I think this is great, as goodness knows the pit bulls have a lot of bad press. Even breeds over here like the staffordshire bull terrier gets bad press.

I still think its mainly the owners who are a fault.

great idea tho

Way to go! I think pits are getting a bad reputation because of the bad individuals that choose to fight these dogs. Great idea to raise money.

I'm glad for this program. People need to realize that a lot of the times, infact most of the times it's the owners doing of making their pits mean dogs.

That's a new twist on bringing attention. I hope that with all the good work that's being done with these animals that dog fighting can be stopped and their reputation changed.

I dont really get the concept, but anything that makes people more understanding and compassionate toward pits, count me in. They are great dogs and should be celebrated any way that works

Raising money and awareness through a unique idea. It is a up hill battle but this will give people pause and in that pause while they are looking at the photos, hopefully they will think.

I think this is awesome. As a pit bull owner myself, I have had to defend my dog from people who we meet. I even had one lady tell me my dog shouldn't be allowed outside in public. I told her my dog wasn't do anyting but sniffing a tree and was not a danger to the public!

Most pit bulls are wonderful pets and dogs. It's too bad that men spoil their nature for dog fighting. Who's the more noble in this situation?

Most pit bulls, if they are trained and bred right, are wonderful dogs and pets. Too bad man has to spoil that for the sake of dog fighting!
