Pinups for Pit bulls

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Each year, a group operating out of Pennsylvania works together to create awareness for a certain canine breed that are almost always looked down upon.

Pinups and pit bulls may sound like an odd combination. But for calendar founder Deirdre Guerin, it’s her contribution to improving public perception of the breed.

Across the nation, stories covering pit bull attacks are printed daily. As a result government bodies have proposed breed bans, fearful of potential attacks. The first pedigree on the list is commonly pit bulls. Few have made it into law – but the fact that a breed ban is the best solution legislatures come up with indicates that the stereotype supersedes reality.

Cognizant of public perception, Guerin created the calendar two years ago to raise awareness and money to help rescue pit bulls. She wants the public to know that pits are peaceful, loyal dogs.

In fact, their obedient nature may be why the breed was chosen to fight.

It wasn’t always that way, though. Throughout history and dating back to the Civil War, pits have played an important role. During World War I for example, a dog named Stubby gained notoriety for his service to the Army’s 102nd infantry. The dog was known for comforting wounded soldiers, keeping watch and once captured a German spy.

But through the years, ill-minded breeders have destroyed pit bulls’ once noble standing in American culture by training them to fight. Today, perception of the dogs as brutal beasts reigns.

In an effort to change that, Guerin and 11 other models, with their furry co-models, pose for the camera. It’s one example of how dedicated pit lovers are working to change the stereotypes. All their hard work is paying off considering last year they raised $11,000.

And at the end of the day, or end of the year for that matter, the pinups just want people to stop giving pit bulls a bad reputation. To show your support for the struggling breed, go to Pinupsforpitbulls.com.

Pit bulls are the dobermans and german sheps of this time. In the 70s, everyone was terrified of Dobes. In the 80s, it was German sheps. Now its pits.

I agree with some of the other comments. I never thought about it too much but they are probably right. The owners are to blame for the dog being aggressive.

Hooray!! What a great idea & what a great cause. It is true that the behavior of our pets are influenced by their guardians and the way they are raised.

I agree. Dogs, regardless of breed, become what they are taught. Environmental/Social factors are the most important in determining the personality of an animal.

Good way to raise money for Pit Bulls. I still think they, like Dobermans, are so mislabled. There are no natural born viscious dogs. It's all in the way they're raised.

cool. pitts can be great, they're fantastic dogs. it's the owners' fault they have such a bad rep. for fighting.

will always remember the instructor saying there
are not bad dog only bad owners. I've always

well said. it's the dog owners that should be euthed and given a bad rep. ;)

What a great, creative idea! It is unfortunate that a small number of irresponsible people have brought such troubles to this breed. I have met more friendly, loving, goofy pits than aggressive ones. In fact, I only remember meeting one who would be called aggressive. You'll find that in any breed!

I couldn't agree more. The way to change the stereotype is to show people how wonderful pit bulls can be, not by shouting and arguing.

What a great idea - a fantastic fundraiser and fun too. As many of us know, it is the owner and not the breed of dog that causes dogs to become vicious. Even pit bulls can be trained to be loving pets.

I'm so glad more and more people are working to erase the negative stigma surronding pit bulls. I live in Denver where they have enacted a breed ban. They should go after the irresponsible owners and not punish a whole group of pit bull lovers! (Like myself)

terrible that humans have to ruin things for a breed of animals, that's why these dog fighting laws need to be established throughout the country and spaying & neutering laws made to prevent the breeding of these dogs to sell to people with bad intentions. It seems like a "statment of some of these people,"look at our bad @ss dogs, where bad , phlisophy is ruining the breed survival of these animals."

I agree, some people attitudes and actions that own these breeds are very irresponsable. If some of these people would wake up and realize all the animals that loose their lives in animal shelters because some of these people have the attitude that it is ok to let their unaltered animals run the streets and breed with other animals.

I hate that in cases where owners teach pit bulls to attack, the pit bulls are still the ones blamed. I'm glad that someone realizes that they aren't all to blame.
