Pinups for Pit bulls

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Each year, a group operating out of Pennsylvania works together to create awareness for a certain canine breed that are almost always looked down upon.

Pinups and pit bulls may sound like an odd combination. But for calendar founder Deirdre Guerin, it’s her contribution to improving public perception of the breed.

Across the nation, stories covering pit bull attacks are printed daily. As a result government bodies have proposed breed bans, fearful of potential attacks. The first pedigree on the list is commonly pit bulls. Few have made it into law – but the fact that a breed ban is the best solution legislatures come up with indicates that the stereotype supersedes reality.

Cognizant of public perception, Guerin created the calendar two years ago to raise awareness and money to help rescue pit bulls. She wants the public to know that pits are peaceful, loyal dogs.

In fact, their obedient nature may be why the breed was chosen to fight.

It wasn’t always that way, though. Throughout history and dating back to the Civil War, pits have played an important role. During World War I for example, a dog named Stubby gained notoriety for his service to the Army’s 102nd infantry. The dog was known for comforting wounded soldiers, keeping watch and once captured a German spy.

But through the years, ill-minded breeders have destroyed pit bulls’ once noble standing in American culture by training them to fight. Today, perception of the dogs as brutal beasts reigns.

In an effort to change that, Guerin and 11 other models, with their furry co-models, pose for the camera. It’s one example of how dedicated pit lovers are working to change the stereotypes. All their hard work is paying off considering last year they raised $11,000.

And at the end of the day, or end of the year for that matter, the pinups just want people to stop giving pit bulls a bad reputation. To show your support for the struggling breed, go to Pinupsforpitbulls.com.

Thsi is a great idea. I hope that it helps. Some of the sweetest and most well behaved dogs I know are pits. They are just great dogs. It is all about how they are trained and how they are loved - or unloved as it may be.

This breed does have a bad reputation so what a great idea. Any one that owns dogs
knows it up to the owner whether that animal is a good or bad dog and it not just
the breed.

Pits, like any number of other breeds, can be bred and raised to be companions or killers. Dobermans, GSDs, Rotts have all been killers. Even Labs can be dangerous.

Great story, but pitbulls seem to have a rep. I've never had a pitbull, but they are only going to mean if you bring them up that way. It's the same with any other type of dog.

Great Story, not all pits are bad. Just have a bad rep. Look at the owners first for the cause if they are mean

My daughter adopted a pit bull from the local rescue group, and she is an angel!! Greta is a delightful dog, now 4 years old, who was officially listed as a Staffordshire Terrier, as the "dangerous Dog" laws make owning a "pit bull" illegal in some areas, home insurance is difficult if not impossible to get, and the stereotype goes on and on.

Pitbulls are not born mean. Their owners make them mean. There are a lot of very friendly pits. One of the women I work with owns one and he is the sweetest thing.

One of our shelter employees who is a retired dog trainer adopted and abandoned female pit bull that came into our shelter, and he says she is a great pet. Unfortunately, until dog fighting is stamped out completely (good luck) there are always going to be unscrupulous breeders who raise vicious pits to fight.

Great idea, and thank you girls! The public needs to see what a wonderful breed pits are. The AKC describes them as wonderful family pets, and great with kids! That is until evil, greedy beings get their hands on them!!!

It's nice to hear good publicity for these dogs. It's the humans and not the dogs that are responsible for much of the bad publicity.

Thumbs up! Pit Bulls get a bad rap, for the bad behavior of humans. If treated kindly, these dogs are loyal, loving and great family pet. I used to have a Staffordshire, and there wasn't a more loving, friendly dog alive. She was with us for 16 years.

I'm glad someone is showing the good side of this breed. It is the owner of the dog and not the breed itself that creates the bad reputation. I hope more people involved with pit bulls will help with this project.

I disagree that promoting good loyal Pits could definately help the problem with public perception. But I agree that we have a serious problem with dogs breed for fighting and irresponsible ownership.

What no one is addressing here is that in certain neighborhoods and in certain micro-cultures in this country, pits are selectively bred for aggression and trained to fight. The real problem is combating this attitude and behavior. Promoting pits is not going to help the root problem -- dogs of a certain breed picked for aggression, backyard bred, then made to fight. The reality is, in certain neighborhoods, the vast majority of dogs of a certain breed are aggressive and are a problem. Out of all the dogs classified as "912" or so aggressive they were not handleable and had to be kept in a special part of the shelter where I worked, 99.99% were pits, akitas, shar peis, rottweilers, dobermans, etc. It is not that people inherently hate these breeds. It is that it is very hard to address the underlying problem without including the fact that people who want aggressive dogs pick dogs for their strength and size, which happen to be most commonly found in a select number of breeds. It would be wonderful if people spent more time and effort trying to solve the problem of what to do with irresponsible owners who own aggressive dogs and the whole dogfighting culture.

Very thorough and thought-provoking comment. I don't think that people simply hate pit bulls. I don't know what purpose is served by acting like an ostrich, ignoring the fact that many cities have more problems with certain breeds than others. And you are right, certain people seek those certain breeds; this problem is circular in nature.

I've grown up with pitbulls. I tend to favor them more. I like the fact that the pinups just want people to stop giving pit bulls a bad reputation. I agree with this. I hope it helps... But by some of the readers leaving comments I see they are too set in their ways to even given them a chance.

I think this is a wonderful idea. I must admit though, I'm a little afraid of pits myself. My aunt has a pit/mix and he makes me nervous,no matter how many times my aunt has reassured me, the breed still scares me.

My son was bit by an ill train pit bull, but like I said the dog was not trained properly I blamed the owner not the dog. Now the incident is a bad memory, my son will have problems with his foot as he gets older but I know that it was not the breed of the animal. I know of smaller dogs that a far more vicious.
