Pinups for Pit bulls

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Each year, a group operating out of Pennsylvania works together to create awareness for a certain canine breed that are almost always looked down upon.

Pinups and pit bulls may sound like an odd combination. But for calendar founder Deirdre Guerin, it’s her contribution to improving public perception of the breed.

Across the nation, stories covering pit bull attacks are printed daily. As a result government bodies have proposed breed bans, fearful of potential attacks. The first pedigree on the list is commonly pit bulls. Few have made it into law – but the fact that a breed ban is the best solution legislatures come up with indicates that the stereotype supersedes reality.

Cognizant of public perception, Guerin created the calendar two years ago to raise awareness and money to help rescue pit bulls. She wants the public to know that pits are peaceful, loyal dogs.

In fact, their obedient nature may be why the breed was chosen to fight.

It wasn’t always that way, though. Throughout history and dating back to the Civil War, pits have played an important role. During World War I for example, a dog named Stubby gained notoriety for his service to the Army’s 102nd infantry. The dog was known for comforting wounded soldiers, keeping watch and once captured a German spy.

But through the years, ill-minded breeders have destroyed pit bulls’ once noble standing in American culture by training them to fight. Today, perception of the dogs as brutal beasts reigns.

In an effort to change that, Guerin and 11 other models, with their furry co-models, pose for the camera. It’s one example of how dedicated pit lovers are working to change the stereotypes. All their hard work is paying off considering last year they raised $11,000.

And at the end of the day, or end of the year for that matter, the pinups just want people to stop giving pit bulls a bad reputation. To show your support for the struggling breed, go to Pinupsforpitbulls.com.

yes, its the owners not the dogs. Nice to hear good publicity for good hearted dogs that are often exploited for their desire to please their owners.

I hate that dogs are type casts because it is humans that train mean dogs they don't just become mean. I think the pinup idea is a great way to help this disconnect.

This is odd, but neat! I guess anything that helps raise awareness of the good nature of this breed is a good thing!

Great story for a good cause! Anything positive to help this breed is terrific. There is so much negative information out there about them.

Love the part about the dog named Stubby. I think this is great. People that do not agree should then find another way to give back,

Excellent article, if more knowledgeable people about pit bulls and the bad rap they have would speak up, maybe things would change......how about more celebs ? you have an audience.....

It's not the breed, it's the owner. Wiggles Blue Heeler is quiet, meek and walks on-leash with me. In nine-plus years, we've been attacked by eight loose dogs: twice by the same black Chow, once by a boxer, once by a German Shepherd, twice by pit bulls, once by a collie mix, and once by a Scottish terrier mix. "Owners" that think it's cool for their dogs to roam and attack at will are the ones in need of reputations: and some serious jail time.

My feelings about people that let pets roam are not printable. Over almost three decades of traveling America, I saw countless -- COUNTLESS -- pets that became road kill. Don't get me started, but this article isn't about that.

Pit bull owners that raise their dogs to fight should themselves face the same tactics they use on their dogs: an eye for an eye. Then let's see how long the fad of having vicious dogs lasts...

Kudos to Guerin and the other models (human and canine) for raising funds for such a maligned breed. The media coverage of pit bulls and other bull breeds needs to be more balanced.

What a great way to put pit bulls out there for the world to see! I think it is a fantastic idea and more people should come up with things like this to put down the stereotypes of misunderstood breeds.

Great article and program. Pit bulls can be such sweethearts. It's unfortunate that they have devoloped such a bad reputation. It's all in how they are raised.

This story doesn't say what kind of pin-ups they are using other than models. I hope that doesn't mean that they have to have half-naked models posing with the dogs as I feel that it highly inappropriate.

Good for Dierdre and company. These dogs badly need friends. Because of the endless negative media and the general public's subsequent misconception of the breed, fear and misinformation rule the day when it comes to Pit Bulls. We read stories about plans afoot all over the country to ban the breed entirely--how wrong and how sad! These are fine dogs, but ironically it is their trusting and eminently loyal nature that makes these animals so susceptible to exploitation by people. Fear and ignornance and irresponsible owners are the enemies and, of course, the dogs pay the price.

Nice job Deirdre!!! It is sad how pitbulls have a bad reputation and it is due to human causes!!! I always feel an animal (and child) become who they are thru their up bringing. Bad experiences scar deeply and cause big problems even becoming a menance to society thru this fault.
