PetSmart Recalls Biscuits after FDA Warning

Browse News

NEW YORK -– In response to the Food and Drug Administration's recall of peanut butter products after determining a nationwide Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak, PetSmart issued a voluntary recall of seven Grreat Choice dog biscuit products on Tuesday.

With more than 1,100 stores in the U.S. and Canada, the pet retailer determined the peanut butter and assorted flavored biscuits sold between Aug. 21, 2009, and Jan. 19 contain peanut butter product linked to the FDA's salmonella recall announced on Monday.

"While some of these products have been tested and no traces of salmonella were found, we have recalled these products as a precautionary measure," was the message posted on PetSmart's Web site. "Because of this potential risk, we're immediately removing these products from our shelves and Web site."

While the FDA is still conducting a "very active and dynamic investigation," it has currently located sources of Salmonella Typhimurium contamination to a plant owned by Peanut Corp. of America.

With assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state partners, the FDA has notified PCA of positive test results from its the Blakely, Ga., plant, which produces peanut butter and peanut paste.

As the scope of the outbreak and source is yet being determined by the FDA, PetSmart has been in communication with all its vendors to verify that no other products are implicated by the FDA's findings, thus far.

If pet owners have purchased the recalled biscuits, the product can be returned to any PetSmart location for a complete refund or exchange, as stated on the company's Web site.

Salmonella is a contagious infection that can cause medical complications relating to gastroenteritis, and can prove especially harmful to young children or elderly people.

Customers whose pets have consumed the product and might be displaying signs of illness are encouraged to contact veterinary help.

Indications of salmonella poisoning in pets may include vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite and sluggishness, as well as more than the pet's normal consumption of water.

For more information on this PetSmart recall, call 1-888-839-9638.

I am glad that product got pulled before any animal might have gotten sick.
but what kind of food product items go into petfood snacks such as these, vs people?
with the last scare with the pet food, all of those brands came off of the shelf.
i think our pet food stores are very compliant when it comes to things like this.
after all , they are are grocery stores for our pets...

Good for PetSmart getting these biscuits off the shelfs. I hope no dogs got sick before they recalled these biscuits.

Another case of too little too late, in my opinion. Where is the oversite? I'm glad that nobody was harmed and that action was taken- but that was just luck.

Every time a food product is recalled, it is scary. And usually the reason for a recall is because a person or animal has gotten sick or died. Why isn't food tested before it is put on the grocery shelf ?

Scarry, we have some of these. Scarrier with 2 kids in the house who often steal the dogs food or treats. Good thing georges food was safe last year when we couldn't keep timmy (then 2) out of it.

It's a shame that we have to worry about products we buy are pets, when we purchase them on the assumption that they are good for them.

It seems like there have been too many recalls on food products here shortly. Maybe they should pay more attention to the ingredients before they put products on the markets.

I noticed that they usually determine a source, but don't always state what went wrong at that source. I wonder about the fertilizers that are used on crops. I've seen stories where pumpkin growers use manure to get huge pumpkins. I wonder if farmers do the same.

I doubt that use of manure would be the problem. The manure is usually worked into the soil to add nutrients so that the plants have what they need to grow. Manure is a natural fertilizer and has been used by farmers for hundreds if not thousands of years. It is more likely that there is some sort of a sanitation issue at the plant that produces the peanut butter since whole peanuts have not been recalled.

There have been human deaths with this outbreak, so I would imagine that animals may have died, too, but the cause wasn't identified as salmonella.

I think I would also be concerned about whether the problem is at the manufacturing part or at the grower's part. I'm avoiding all peanut products, just to be safe.

It is more likely that the problem is on the manufacturing side. The only peanut products associated with thi srecall are the ones that were produced by one company. Whole peanuts and peanut butter that is available at the store have not been recalled because they were not manufactured by the company that is involved in the recall.

I am glad that Petsmart recalled these bicuits after a FDA warning. That is more than most stores do. I was standing in WalMart yesterday and looking at Kellogs health bars with peanut butter in them. I thought these were susposed to be taken off their shelves.

That's a good point. Around Christmas, one of our local TV stations went to stores and found a huge number of toys that had been recalled due to hazardous parts and they were still on the shelves. It's all the more reason to be a smart consumer and keep up on these things since you really can't rely on stores removing all the products.

There are a number of non peanut butter treats out there, and other than the one manufacturer there is no other contamination. Some web sites state they have had the peanut butter treats analyzed and are safe. I hope this is a short term problem.

It is getting more frightening all the time with contamination in our human and pet foods. We do need to step up our inspections of food sources and when you have so many contamination failures maybe it is time to stop importing food products from the sources that can't seem to keep the food clear of contaminants

I am so happy my dogs don't like peanut butter unless its on a spoon scooped fresh from a jar! I feel for those dogs that might have eaten some of these snacks. My Hoku is picky and only likes his bacon treats!

I hope the public is kept up-to-date on this peanut butter salmonella. And not like the Menu Foods saga where news kept, slowly trickling out as animals were getting very sick and dying.
