PetSmart Recalls Biscuits after FDA Warning

Browse News

NEW YORK -– In response to the Food and Drug Administration's recall of peanut butter products after determining a nationwide Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak, PetSmart issued a voluntary recall of seven Grreat Choice dog biscuit products on Tuesday.

With more than 1,100 stores in the U.S. and Canada, the pet retailer determined the peanut butter and assorted flavored biscuits sold between Aug. 21, 2009, and Jan. 19 contain peanut butter product linked to the FDA's salmonella recall announced on Monday.

"While some of these products have been tested and no traces of salmonella were found, we have recalled these products as a precautionary measure," was the message posted on PetSmart's Web site. "Because of this potential risk, we're immediately removing these products from our shelves and Web site."

While the FDA is still conducting a "very active and dynamic investigation," it has currently located sources of Salmonella Typhimurium contamination to a plant owned by Peanut Corp. of America.

With assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state partners, the FDA has notified PCA of positive test results from its the Blakely, Ga., plant, which produces peanut butter and peanut paste.

As the scope of the outbreak and source is yet being determined by the FDA, PetSmart has been in communication with all its vendors to verify that no other products are implicated by the FDA's findings, thus far.

If pet owners have purchased the recalled biscuits, the product can be returned to any PetSmart location for a complete refund or exchange, as stated on the company's Web site.

Salmonella is a contagious infection that can cause medical complications relating to gastroenteritis, and can prove especially harmful to young children or elderly people.

Customers whose pets have consumed the product and might be displaying signs of illness are encouraged to contact veterinary help.

Indications of salmonella poisoning in pets may include vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite and sluggishness, as well as more than the pet's normal consumption of water.

For more information on this PetSmart recall, call 1-888-839-9638.

This is one reason that I like to shop at Petsmart, because when it is announced that a product is recalled they take action and remove it from the shelves.

Thumbs up to Pet Smart to be the first to bring the alert and take all the peanut butter foods off the shelf. And now, so soon after, the list of foods, animal and human, is growing and growing.

Sounds like Petsmart is on top of the problem. I hope no pets are affected by this salmonella outbreak.

Are other retailers issuing similar recalls, or is it just PetSmart? I'm positive that there are more than 7 varieties of dog treats on supermarket shelves across America which contain peanut butter! I guess I'll have to read the labels.

With the latest news out today it show's Pet Smarts class by moving immediately to remove possibly tainted treats. It has to be a concern to all of us, human and animal what is happening as new technology finds tainted products for all.

Nothing quite like doggy diarrhea to brighten a slow depressing day, eh Fido? (People get it too, same reason. . .) Anyone care to increase FDA funding yet?

Why can't people wash their hands before touching anything that's eaten? Shouldn't matter if it's for human or animal. Someone needs to track the cause.

Someone should look into why we have been having so many problems with salmonella lately. Correcting the problem not only would save our pets, but it would save the company money.

Might be a good time to practice again making our own Peanut Butter.

From Kids Health

Homemade Peanut Butter

Prep time: about 10 minutes

1 tbsp. peanut oil
Utensils:

food processor (You'll need help from your adult assistant.)

Directions:

For smooth peanut butter:

Mix the peanuts with the peanut oil, and pour the mixture into the food processor.
Process the mixture until it's very smooth.
Store your smooth peanut butter in a sealed container in the fridge. It will be good for 2 weeks.

For chunky peanut butter:

Take about 1/4 cup out of your 1 1/2 cups of peanuts and set them aside.
Mix the rest of the peanuts with the oil, and pour the mixture into the food processor.
Process the mixture until it's very smooth, then stir in the peanuts that you had set aside.

What's a peanut butter lover to do! Though so far the recalls are for industrial peanut butter, not the jars on the human shelf. So I'm sticking to to the Central Market brand

We have what they call "Old Farmers Day" here. The festival will be upcoming in a few moths. Until then, I can get in touch with some of the people that make peanut butter to sale at festival time. I can buy from them now. I enjoy going to the fest and stand at the booth and watch them make the stuff -and sample it. Its some yummy peanut butter.

The night before this recall I had purchased a Kong Toy for my puppy and was going to put some peanut butter for her since so many people on here had said their dogs love it, and that my puppy would love it to keep her company while I am at work. But now this happens.
This is why I love going to Petsmart they are voluntarily pulling all those products off the shelf even though they did not test positive for salmonella for the safety of our pets!

It goes to show, if you wouldn't eat it, don't give it to yor babies. I hope I never have to deal with poisoned pets, like so may did when the Chinese decided to put inferior ingredients in the foods. All I can say is that I truly believe that the besdt way to prevent these incidents is to sue the companies involved for every cent they've got. Hitting them in the wallet is the only way to stop them since apparently, thats all they care about. It infuriates me that the level of safety should EVER be compromised for a few dollars.
