PetSmart Recalls Biscuits after FDA Warning

Browse News

NEW YORK -– In response to the Food and Drug Administration's recall of peanut butter products after determining a nationwide Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak, PetSmart issued a voluntary recall of seven Grreat Choice dog biscuit products on Tuesday.

With more than 1,100 stores in the U.S. and Canada, the pet retailer determined the peanut butter and assorted flavored biscuits sold between Aug. 21, 2009, and Jan. 19 contain peanut butter product linked to the FDA's salmonella recall announced on Monday.

"While some of these products have been tested and no traces of salmonella were found, we have recalled these products as a precautionary measure," was the message posted on PetSmart's Web site. "Because of this potential risk, we're immediately removing these products from our shelves and Web site."

While the FDA is still conducting a "very active and dynamic investigation," it has currently located sources of Salmonella Typhimurium contamination to a plant owned by Peanut Corp. of America.

With assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state partners, the FDA has notified PCA of positive test results from its the Blakely, Ga., plant, which produces peanut butter and peanut paste.

As the scope of the outbreak and source is yet being determined by the FDA, PetSmart has been in communication with all its vendors to verify that no other products are implicated by the FDA's findings, thus far.

If pet owners have purchased the recalled biscuits, the product can be returned to any PetSmart location for a complete refund or exchange, as stated on the company's Web site.

Salmonella is a contagious infection that can cause medical complications relating to gastroenteritis, and can prove especially harmful to young children or elderly people.

Customers whose pets have consumed the product and might be displaying signs of illness are encouraged to contact veterinary help.

Indications of salmonella poisoning in pets may include vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite and sluggishness, as well as more than the pet's normal consumption of water.

For more information on this PetSmart recall, call 1-888-839-9638.

I'm glad to see that this was a voluntary recall. I know for myself that I will be staying away from any peanut butter treats for my dogs for a long time.

Every store or business should do the right thing and recall products/items they think could hurt humans or pets. Hearing Petsmart did such a thing shows they care about the pets, not the business they may have lost. Do the right thing is the name of the game.

Great that the chain pulled their products, scary that you just don't know what to feed your animals or people. Seems that companies are cutting corners to make more profit at the risk of animals and people. Shame. Good article.

I'm glad they are taking these recalls seriously. I actually had 2 bags of these treats at my house, which I promptly returned. Neither bag had been opened yet so that's a good thing. Thank you Petsmart for taking action quickly and making it so easy to return the items without a hassle.

I'm glad that PetSmart did the right thing when they became aware of the alert re: peanut butter products! Hopefully, they will be able to get rid of all of the effected material without anymore illnesses occuring. I aways buy "holistic" food and treats for my dogs, but those treats could be holistic and also contain peanut butter, so that's worrisome! You just never know ~ even when you try to be careful!

It seems like anymore there is always some kind of recall on unsafe food and toys or what not. Hopefully, they can make some restrictions and get this problem taken care of.

I'm glad they came forward. With all the clamor about human food products it was only a matter of time before we would see a trickle down to animal foods. As an aside, I wonder how much peanut product the US has shipped to3rd world countries that was contaminated.

There are even more items that have been added to the original list. I would carefully check the ingredient list of any product in my house or that I was considering buying and check against the updated list of recalled products.
