Pets in the Office; the New Casual Friday

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – In today’s dog-eat-dog world, office managers are always looking for ways to improve their employees’ performance. One new trend taking place nationwide does just that by injecting a little fun into the workplace – and to do it, they’re making “bring your pet to work” an everyday thing.

It’s just another day in the office for everyone at Chapin Hill Advisors, Inc., a financial planning and investment advisory firm in New York City.

The industry this firm belongs to has a markedly stodgy tradition. To break free of the stress that can boil over with the market, company managers decided to allow pets in the office.

“When I’m having a stressful day and the market is going haywire, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’ I just pet one of (the pets) and they automatically make me feel calm,” said Kathy Boyle, CHA founder and president.

According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), 100 percent of U.S. companies they found that allowed pets, agreed that animals make the office environment more relaxing.

“Having an animal in the office brings a sense of joy, it brings a sense of fun,” said Boyle. “We work very hard and long hours, and being able to lighten it up is watching Paco run down the hallway chasing his ball. It brings a sense of joy, humanness and kindness.”

But it’s not all ball chasing and belly rubs, because having pets in the office can be complicated.

“You have an issue if you bring a cat; the dog is going to chase the cat.” Boyle said, “Dogs are the most ideal to bring to a firm like (CHA). But you will have rivalries and territories. You also have some issues about liabilities, employees getting in the middle of two dogs fighting.”

Those issues don’t compare to the work-life balance having a pet in the office can bring. Boyle said that she’s had a number of dogs who contracted cancer.

“If you know that they are down to the last few months you want to cherish and keep them closer to you, you want to see them more.” she said, “Where if you are working a million hours you wouldn’t see them in their last days.”

If your office wants to adopt pet friendly policies, Boyle says there are some rules to follow. She suggested that company considering this, ask:

“How big is your company going to be? It might be two of you and very casual and you each bring your dog but what if you get five more employees?”

She says setting a schedule for larger companies is key. You might want to allot each employee a day to bring their animal.

Being thoughtful about the issues is the only way to make the whole thing work, Boyle said. After all, not everyone has well behaved pets. You need to think about responsibility before hand, because with animals you never know what’s going to happen.

Some other things to think about:

Does anyone have allergies?

Establish “Off-limit pet zones.”

Make sure employees bring documents proving pets are vaccinated.

Tell employees to keep control of their animals at all times.

Make a rotating pet schedule.

If you put these rules in place, chances are you’ll have a pet-friendly workplace in no time.

Does your office allow pets? If you work for a shelter or rescue, clearly you do. But if you work in a traditional office, share your stories under this article. You can post your favorite pet videos at the ZootooTV tab. Send us your story ideas at news@zootoo.com or by calling us at 877-777-4204.

A book store I visit has a "store cat" and she's one of the reasons I go there. She stays on a little pillow or is near the cash register, she's a real draw.

I think it is a great idea overall, guess it is better than your pet sitting at the window at home wondering when you are coming home.......or he could be home eating your couch LOL......

Would love to bring my dog to work. Not sure if I would get anything done as I'd be giving her kisses all day.

I just love that thought! How cool to go shopping and all retail stores having pets there to greet us. They would make excellent store greeters.

I know mine would. The smokers take smoke breaks throughout the day, I'd love to take the same time to walk my dog outside for a 'potty break.' (Except in the winter!)

I LOVE this idea! Maybe a family member of one of the people bringing their animals could come into the office as well, so the pets are minded by nonworkers most of the day (ya gotta get some work done, after all....)

If the environment lends itself to this, it would be a great way to soften the day's irritations. In some offices however, it is a major issue with allergies and pet fears. That being said, in most cases, personal pet choices should be contained in one's own personal environment. I don't want to spend the day next to an animal that scares me.

Personally, I hate pets in the office. It is disruptive and some people don't like dogs--so why subject them to that?

I know of several locally-owned and operated businesses that keep their pets in the store and the animals are always well-behaved. There's one store in particular that has a cat who always picks a new place to nap, and so it's always a fun game to try and find the cat when I go in.

I went to a lumber yard today, and they have a pet cat that stays in their office/store area. They told me that she appeared at their doorstep 6 years ago, pregnant and hungry. She had 6 kittens, which they found homes for and then they had her spayed. She is obvious a well cared for cat, and very friendly. The men working there all seemed very fond of her ~ and she helped to present a warm atmosphere at their business.

I work at a salon 1 day a week and when my boss was potty traning her 2 dogs (at different times) she brought them to work. We also have another girl who did that when she got a puppy and also with her children's dogs. I also did it with mine. It brought alot of smiles to people. they will even still ask us how they are all doing. people will come in and visit with their pets at times. We do know that some people aren't as welcoming, so we have a back room that they will go to when that happens. I have seen and heard alot about this happening and I think it is wonderful. Sometimes our dogs are home alone, some in crates too long and we feel bad. It is a win, win for all.

I worked at an agency that allowed one of my co-workers to bring her dog to assist with her clients. Not only did her clients benefit, the rest of us did as well. Our stress reduced and the moral around the office increased. I worked at another agency with preschool children. I brought my cat to the office and in the classroom a couple of times. The children were more responsive and I enjoyed the special time with Princess. She enjoyed getting out of the house, too!

I would rather stay home with my pet!

They would meow to much.. we are not allowed to have pets in the office anyway.
My boss has at least 4, I have 6, one lady is an animal breeder, and another has 8 dogs.
We would not be able to decide which one to bring.

I know that my cats would be scared and not know what to think. Plus they think the car = vet.

I would love to work at a place where I could bring my dog to work. As long as the dogs are well behaved and don't cause too much of a distraction I can see how this would improve moral. I wouldn't want to have to be the boss deciding if people should bring their dogs to work because there is a lot of things to consider. But if I were an employee I would have no problem being able to bring my dog in instead of having them crated while I was gone.
